How to export iMessages, WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram chats on a Mac
How to export iMessages from a Mac, plus WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram chats: the built-in options, formats, what's left out, and free tools to read them.
The short answer
- Messages on a Mac has no export button: you can save one conversation as a PDF with File → Print, or export your whole history with the free, open-source imessage-exporter, which needs Full Disk Access for Terminal.
- WhatsApp's Mac app can export a chat as a ZIP file (chat name → Export chat), with or without media; WhatsApp Web exports text only but lets you pick a date range.
- Telegram's export lives in Telegram Desktop (⋮ → Export chat history, as HTML or JSON); the native Telegram for macOS app doesn't have it.
- Instagram exports DMs through Accounts Center's Export your information; choose JSON if you want to analyze them, and expect to wait for the download link.
You can’t export iMessages from a Mac with a built-in button: Messages only lets you print one conversation or save it as a PDF (File → Print), and for your whole history you need a tool such as the free, open-source imessage-exporter. WhatsApp’s Mac app does have Export chat, Telegram’s export lives in Telegram Desktop rather than the native Telegram for macOS app, and Instagram sends your DMs as a download from Accounts Center. All four were checked against each company’s help pages, or the app’s own source code, on 20 October 2026.
Below you’ll find step-by-step instructions for each app, what each export leaves out, and what to do with the file afterwards, including free browser tools that read WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram exports without uploading them.
Export options at a glance
| App | Built-in export on a Mac? | Where | What you get | Media |

| WhatsApp (Mac app) | Yes | Chat name → Export chat | ZIP with a text file | With all, selected or no media |
| WhatsApp Web | Yes | ⋮ → Export chat | ZIP with a text file | None |
| Telegram | In Telegram Desktop only | ⋮ → Export chat history | HTML, JSON or both | Pick types and a size limit |
| Through Accounts Center | Export your information | ZIP of HTML or JSON | Choose media quality |
How to export iMessages from a Mac
There are two routes: a PDF of one conversation from Messages itself, or a full export with a free tool. The PDF is quick; the tool is the only way to get everything.
Save one conversation as a PDF
Apple documents this in its Messages guide for macOS Sequoia (Apple). The guides for later macOS versions no longer include that page, so if your Messages has no Print command in the File menu, skip to imessage-exporter below.
- Open Messages and select the conversation.
- Choose File → Print.
- To save instead of printing, click the menu next to PDF at the bottom of the dialog and choose Save as PDF.
Check where the PDF starts before you rely on it. Decipher Tools, which sells a paid export app, says printing straight from Messages only gives you “the past few days” of a long conversation.
Export your whole history with imessage-exporter
imessage-exporter is a free, open-source command-line tool that exports every conversation to HTML or plain-text files and can copy attachments alongside. It’s actively maintained (latest release 15 September 2026), and its developer says it supports every iMessage feature as of macOS 27.0.1.
- Give Terminal Full Disk Access: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access, click +, add Terminal (in Applications → Utilities), then quit and reopen Terminal. Your Messages history sits in a protected database, and Terminal can’t read it without this permission; our Full Disk Access explainer covers the details.
- Install it. If you use Homebrew, run
brew install imessage-exporter(the developer notes the Homebrew version can lag the latest release). Otherwise follow the install steps, which use Rust’scargoor a prebuilt download from the releases page. - Export. For web pages with attachments copied alongside:
imessage-exporter -f html -c clone
For conversations with one person, add a filter with their number or email, such as -t "5558675309" (group chats they’re in are exported too). For one year, add -s 2026-01-01 -e 2027-01-01.
- Switch Terminal off again in Full Disk Access when you’re done.
The same tool can read an iPhone backup instead of your Mac’s history, which helps if Messages in iCloud is off on your Mac. Paid apps such as Decipher TextMessage also export iMessages to PDF if you’d rather not use Terminal; check their price and what they need access to before you buy.
Note that our free chat tools don’t read iMessage exports. They’re built for WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram.
How to export a WhatsApp chat on a Mac
WhatsApp’s Mac app exports a chat as a ZIP file containing a text file, and media if you include it. Here are WhatsApp’s steps for the Mac app (WhatsApp Help Center):
- Open the individual or group chat.
- Click the contact’s name or the group name, then Export chat.
- If the chat has media, choose With all media, With selected media… or Without media.
- Choose where to send it, for example Save to Files.
On WhatsApp Web the steps differ: open the chat’s ⋮ menu, click Export chat, choose All messages or Custom date range, and click Export. You get a ZIP without media, and disappearing messages are skipped. The date range is handy when you only need a few weeks.
On your phone: iPhone works like the Mac (tap the name, then Export chat); on Android, tap ⋮ → More → Export chat, then Without media or Include media.
Three things to know about WhatsApp exports:
- View once messages aren’t included (WhatsApp says so for iPhone, Mac and the web).
- It can’t be re-imported. WhatsApp says the export is a text file, not a backup. For moving or restoring chats, use WhatsApp’s chat backup.
- There’s no published message limit. As of October 2026, WhatsApp’s export instructions don’t say how many messages an export can hold, so treat the figures other guides repeat with caution. What WhatsApp does say is that on Android, Include media attaches “the most recent media sent”, not necessarily every photo in the chat. If an export seems to start later than it should, check its first date: the chat analyzer shows the date range of any WhatsApp export you open.
Why is Export chat missing?
Check these three things:
- Restricted chat is on. In a group, an admin can turn it on; in a one-to-one chat, either person can. When it’s on, nobody in the chat can export it, use Meta AI features in it, or open it on a linked device such as WhatsApp on a Mac. It can only be switched on or off from the phone (WhatsApp Help Center).
- Advanced chat privacy is on. This is the older version of the same setting, and it blocks exporting too (WhatsApp). WhatsApp is replacing it with Restricted chat, but chats that already had it turned on don’t switch over automatically, so you may still meet it.
- You’re looking in the wrong menu. In the Mac app and on iPhone, Export chat sits behind the contact’s or group’s name; on WhatsApp Web and Android it’s in the ⋮ menu (Android adds a More step).
If a restricted chat matters to you, ask the person or the group admin rather than working around it.
Read or print the export
A WhatsApp export is a plain text file, which is hard to read. Free tools on this site open it in your browser without uploading it:
- The WhatsApp chat viewer and PDF maker shows the chat as bubbles with search, and Save as PDF opens your browser’s print dialog. There’s no message limit; photos and other media show as placeholders.
- WhatsApp chat to Excel turns the chat into a spreadsheet file (CSV) with one row per message: date, time, sender, message and type.
- The chat analyzer counts messages and words per person, who starts conversations, typical reply times and your busiest days.
All three are confirmed to work with the exports WhatsApp makes on iPhone and Android, so export the chat from your phone when you plan to use them.
How to export Telegram chats on a Mac
Telegram’s export tool is in Telegram Desktop, not in the native Telegram for macOS app. Telegram makes both, and their names confuse everyone (our guide to Telegram on Mac explains the difference). The native app has no export command; even its own account-deletion warning tells you to “open the latest version of Telegram Desktop and go to Settings > Export Telegram Data” (Telegram for macOS source). Telegram Lite, the Mac App Store edition of Telegram Desktop, is built from the same code.
You can install Telegram Desktop from desktop.telegram.org alongside the native app and sign in to the same account. Then:
To export one chat:
- Open the chat and click ⋮ at the top right.
- Choose Export chat history.
- Tick the media you want (photos, videos, voice messages and so on) and set a size limit, or untick them all for text only.
- Under format, choose Human-readable HTML, Machine-readable JSON or Both. Pick JSON if you want to analyze the chat.
- Optionally set a date range, then click Export.
To export everything (all chats, contacts and account data): Settings → Advanced → Export Telegram data.
If you’ve only just signed in to Telegram Desktop, Telegram may make you wait before the download starts. The app explains that this is “for security reasons”, notifies your other devices about the request, and tells you when to come back (Telegram Desktop source).
A JSON export gives you a result.json file, which the Telegram chat analyzer reads in your browser. If it’s a whole-account export (with Personal chats ticked), the analyzer lists every chat in it so you can pick one. To read or print the chat instead, open the same file in Telegram chat to PDF, which shows it as bubbles with search and offers Save as PDF and a spreadsheet download. Both read the JSON export only, not the HTML one, and media show as placeholders. If you want a summary of a chat rather than counts, see how to summarize Telegram chats.
How to download your Instagram messages on a Mac
Instagram exports DMs as part of your account data, through Accounts Center. You can do it in a browser on your Mac at instagram.com (Instagram Help Center):
- Click More in the bottom left, then Settings.
- Click Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions.
- Click Export your information, then Create export.
- Choose your Instagram profile, click Next, then Export to device.
- Customize the export: choose only messages if that’s all you need, choose a date range, set the format to JSON or HTML, and choose a media quality.
- Click Start export.
The format menu offers HTML or JSON, the same two formats Meta lists for its other Accounts Center exports (Meta Help Center). HTML is easier to browse; JSON is what analysis tools read. Instagram says the link can take up to 30 days to arrive, and once the export is ready you have four days to download it from Available downloads. Older guides call this feature “Download your information”; Meta’s pages use both names. Instagram also says it’s moving some people to Meta Account settings, so you may see that instead of Accounts Center.
You can drop the whole ZIP into the Instagram chat analyzer, which lists every conversation in it so you can pick one; it reads the JSON version only. To read a conversation or print it, Instagram chat to PDF opens the same ZIP as chat bubbles with search, Save as PDF and a spreadsheet download (JSON only here too; photos show as placeholders). If you unzip it yourself, each conversation has its own folder inside messages/inbox (recent downloads put that under your_instagram_activity), with a message_1.json file, and long conversations continue in message_2.json and beyond.
Keep exported chats safe
An export is a full copy of a private conversation, including the other person’s messages, sitting in your Downloads folder. A few habits help:
- Export only what you need. Use a date range (WhatsApp Web, Telegram, Instagram) or a single conversation rather than everything.
- Leave media out unless you need it: smaller files, fewer private photos.
- Think before uploading it anywhere. Pasting an export into ChatGPT or Claude sends everyone’s words to that company; our guide to asking ChatGPT to analyze your texts covers what to strip out first.
- Delete it when you’re done, and empty the Trash.
If what you actually want is to find old messages rather than archive them, an export may be overkill. Tera Chat for Mac, a free app made by the team behind this blog, brings iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder into one inbox and adds your messages to Spotlight, so you can search all of them from one place. It isn’t an export tool, and it needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later. For the bigger picture, see the best messaging apps for Mac and how to combine WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram and Instagram in one Mac app.
Which export should you use?
- One iMessage conversation for your records: File → Print → Save as PDF, then check it starts where you need it to.
- Your whole iMessage history: imessage-exporter, with Full Disk Access switched on only while it runs.
- A WhatsApp chat to read or print: export it from your phone without media, then open it in the WhatsApp chat viewer (or the Excel page if you want a spreadsheet).
- Telegram: Telegram Desktop, JSON format.
- Instagram: Accounts Center, JSON format, and start now, because the link can take a while.
Frequently asked questions
Can I export all my iMessages at once on a Mac?
Not with Messages itself, which only prints one conversation at a time. The free imessage-exporter tool exports every conversation to HTML or text files in one go, with attachments, once Terminal has Full Disk Access.
How do I export iMessages from an iPhone?
The iPhone has no export option either. Back up the iPhone to a computer, then point imessage-exporter at the backup folder; it can read iPhone backups as well as a Mac's Messages history.
Why can't I export a WhatsApp group?
If a group admin has turned on Restricted chat (or the older Advanced chat privacy), nobody in the group can export it. In a one-to-one chat, either person can turn it on.
Can I import an exported chat back into WhatsApp?
No. WhatsApp says an export is a text file, not a backup, so it can't be re-imported. Use WhatsApp's own chat backup if you want to restore chats later.
Which export format should I pick for analysis?
For Telegram and Instagram, choose JSON: it's what analysis tools read. WhatsApp exports are always plain text, usually inside a ZIP, and iMessage exports depend on the tool you use.
