AI for your messages

How to summarize Telegram chats (Telegram's built-in AI only does channels)

Telegram's AI summaries only cover channel posts. Here's how to summarize a Telegram chat or group: export, bots, or a Mac app, and what each one can see.

The short answer

  • As of October 2026, Telegram's built-in AI summaries cover long channel posts and Instant View pages only, not private chats or groups.
  • Telegram's other AI tools don't fill the gap: the AI Editor rewrites what you type, and guest AI bots only see the message they're tagged in and replies to it.
  • To summarize a private chat or group, export it from Telegram Desktop as HTML or JSON and give it to ChatGPT or Claude, accepting that the text goes to that company.
  • A bot that summarizes a whole group must be an admin or have privacy mode off, so it receives every message sent in the group.
  • Secret chats only exist on the device where they started, so no export, bot or desktop app can summarize them.

Telegram’s built-in AI can’t summarize your private chats or groups. Since 3 January 2026 it summarizes long posts in channels and adds an automatic summary to Instant View pages, and as of 20 October 2026 that’s still all it covers. To summarize a private chat or a group you have three options: export it from Telegram Desktop and give it to an AI like ChatGPT or Claude, use a bot (which means a third party receives the messages), or use a Mac app that can summarize Telegram threads.

This guide shows what Telegram’s AI does and doesn’t do, the steps for each workaround, and exactly what each one can see.

What Telegram’s built-in AI actually does

Telegram has shipped several AI features in 2026, and none of them summarizes your conversations. We went through every post on the Telegram blog from January to August 2026 on 20 October 2026 and read each one that mentions AI.

Feature Added What it does Summarizes your chats or groups?
AI summaries 3 January 2026 Summarizes long channel posts; adds an automatic summary to the top of Instant View pages No
AI Editor 31 March 2026 Fixes grammar, rewrites your message in a style (Formal, Short and others) or translates it No, it works on what you type
Custom AI Styles 7 May 2026 Lets you write your own prompt to create a style for the AI Editor No
Guest AI bots 7 May 2026 Tag a bot by its @username in any private or group chat and it replies there No, it only sees the tagged message and replies to it
AI Guardians 11 June 2026 AI bots that group admins can use to screen people asking to join (Telegram, June 2026) No
Private bot messages in groups 14 July 2026 Bots in groups can send messages only one person sees, such as a private AI summary (Telegram, July 2026) Only if a bot that offers summaries is in the group

Channel summaries. Telegram’s announcement says long channel posts can be summarized instantly and Instant View pages get a summary automatically. It doesn’t name the control, so look for the summary option on a long post. The summaries run on open-source models through Cocoon, which Telegram describes as a decentralized network designed for privacy, with each request encrypted.

The AI Editor appears as an AI icon above the Send arrow once you’ve typed more than three lines (Telegram, March 2026). It’s a writing tool, not a reading tool.

Guest bots look like the answer, but they aren’t. You can tag one in a chat even if it isn’t a member, yet Telegram says a guest bot has access only to the message it’s tagged in and any replies to that message, and can’t see other messages in the chat (Telegram, May 2026). Tagging an AI bot under a 400-message group thread gets you an answer about one message.

Method 1: Export the chat from Telegram Desktop and ask an AI

Exporting is the most complete way to summarize a private chat or group, because the AI gets the whole conversation. The cost is that you hand it to another company.

Get the right app. Telegram documents chat export in Telegram Desktop (Telegram’s export announcement). Telegram has several Mac apps with confusingly similar names, explained in our Telegram on Mac guide. If you don’t see the export option in the one you use, install Telegram Desktop from desktop.telegram.org.

Export one chat:

  1. Open the chat or group in Telegram Desktop.
  2. Click the ⋮ menu at the top right and choose Export chat history.
  3. If you only need the text, leave photos, videos and files out of the export. It keeps the file small.
  4. Choose a format: HTML (readable in a browser) or JSON (one file, easier for an AI to parse).
  5. Click Export and open the folder when it’s done.

To export several chats at once, use Export Telegram data in Telegram Desktop’s settings instead.

Want numbers rather than a summary, such as who writes most, reply times and the busiest hours? Open the same JSON export in our free Telegram chat analyzer. It reads the file in your browser and doesn’t upload it.

Summarize it. Upload the JSON file (or the HTML pages) to ChatGPT or Claude with a specific prompt:

This is an exported Telegram group chat in JSON. Summarize the last
7 days in under 150 words, then list:
1. Decisions made
2. Questions nobody has answered
3. Anything addressed to me (@yourusername) or mentioning my name
4. Links, files and dates that were shared
Quote the original message for anything you're unsure about.

Privacy cost. The file contains everyone’s messages, names and usernames. In ChatGPT, turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings > Data controls, or use a Temporary chat, which isn’t used for training but may be kept for up to 30 days (OpenAI Help Center). On Claude’s consumer plans, chats are used for training only if you’ve allowed it in your privacy settings (Anthropic). Delete the export and the AI conversation when you’re done.

What you can’t export: secret chats. Telegram says secret chats are device-specific, aren’t part of its cloud, and can only be read on the device where they started (Telegram FAQ). That rules them out for every method on this page, which is the point of them.

Method 2: Use a summarizer bot (know what it can see)

Third-party bots can summarize groups, and Telegram’s July 2026 update even lets them send a “private AI summary” that only you see in the group. But to summarize a conversation, a bot has to receive it.

Telegram’s bot documentation sets the rules (Telegram bot features):

  • By default, bots in groups run in privacy mode. They get commands meant for them, replies to their messages and service messages (such as someone joining). They don’t see ordinary conversation.
  • A bot added as an admin, or one whose developer turned privacy mode off, receives every message sent in the group, except messages from other bots.

So a bot that can summarize your group is a bot whose developer’s servers receive everything said in that group. That can be fine for a public community, and a bad idea for a family group or a work chat. Before adding one:

  1. Check who makes the bot and read its privacy policy, if it has one.
  2. Ask the group. Adding a bot that reads everything without telling people is the fastest way to lose their trust.
  3. Remove the bot when you no longer need it.

A related setting deserves the same caution: Settings > Chat Automation connects a bot to your own account so it can reply to messages on your behalf. You choose which chats it can access, and it can read whatever you give it access to.

Method 3: Summarize Telegram chats on a Mac with Tera Chat

If you read Telegram on a Mac alongside other messaging apps, a unified inbox can summarize a Telegram thread without exporting anything. Tera Chat is our app, so weigh this section accordingly. It’s a free Mac app that brings iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder into one inbox.

  1. In Tera Chat, go to Settings → Messaging → Telegram → Sign in. Telegram’s own web app opens in a private browser window (Google Chrome, Brave or Microsoft Edge must be installed). Sign in there, then click Sync History.
  2. Open a Telegram chat, group or channel and press ⇧⌘S to Summarize its latest messages (up to the last 100).
  3. Use Ask about this chat for specifics, such as “Which link did Sam send about the flat?” Answers draw on the last 50 messages and what Tera Chat has learned about the person.

Tera Chat imports the chats in your main Telegram chat list, groups and channels included; chats you’ve archived in Telegram aren’t imported.

Privacy cost. Messages are stored on your Mac and never uploaded to a Tera Chat server. The text being summarized goes to the AI you pick: your own ChatGPT account through OpenAI’s Codex app, your own Claude or Grok API key, or a Tera Chat AI plan (Anthropic’s Claude, passed through Tera Chat’s server, which doesn’t keep it). Once AI is set up, some features run in the background, such as a summary after every 10 new messages; you can pause that in Settings → Pipelines.

Limits. It needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later, and it can’t read secret chats (nothing can, outside the original device). In a group, the AI is told which messages are yours but not which member sent each of the others, and for a backlog longer than 100 messages the export method covers more. Using your ChatGPT account (through Codex) or a Claude or Grok API key costs nothing extra from Tera Chat; AI Plus costs $9.99/month or $99.99/year (cancel anytime).

Which method fits?

Method What it covers Who receives the messages Effort
Telegram AI summaries Long channel posts and Instant View pages only Telegram’s Cocoon network (encrypted requests) None
Export + ChatGPT or Claude Any private chat, group or channel you can open in Telegram Desktop (not secret chats) OpenAI or Anthropic, under your account settings A few minutes per chat
Summarizer bot Groups and channels it belongs to, if it’s an admin or has privacy mode off The bot’s developer Setup once, plus the group’s consent
Tera Chat on a Mac The last 100 messages of any chat, group or channel synced to your Mac (not secret or archived chats) Stays on your Mac; the text being summarized goes to your chosen AI One keystroke

Catch up faster without any AI

Before you summarize anything, Telegram’s own tools often get you most of the way:

  • Jump to your mentions. When someone mentions you in a group, an @ button appears in the chat; tap it repeatedly to jump from mention to mention, and long-press it to mark them all read (Telegram API docs).
  • Search inside the chat for your name, or for the place, date or topic you care about.
  • Mute or archive channels and big groups you only skim, so the chats that need you stay on top.

What to do next

For channels, use Telegram’s built-in summaries; they’re free and need no setup. For a private chat or group you need to understand properly, export it from Telegram Desktop and summarize it with ChatGPT or Claude, after switching off model training. Be wary of bots that ask for every message in a group. If Telegram is one of several apps you read on a Mac, an inbox that summarizes any thread with one keystroke saves the export step. Our guides to summarizing a WhatsApp group chat and whether it’s safe to let AI read your messages cover the same trade-offs for other apps, and AI that replies to texts in your style covers what comes after the summary.

Frequently asked questions

Does Telegram have AI summaries?

Yes, but only for long posts in channels and for Instant View pages, which get an automatic summary at the top. Telegram added them on 3 January 2026 and hasn't announced summaries for private chats or groups.

Can Telegram's AI summarize a group chat?

Not with a built-in feature as of October 2026. Bots in a group can send private AI summaries to one person, but only if a bot that offers them has been added to the group with access to its messages.

Is it safe to use a Telegram bot to summarize my chats?

It depends on who runs the bot. A summarizer bot needs to receive the messages it summarizes, which means they reach the bot developer's servers. Check who makes it, ask the group first, and remove it when you're done.

Why can't I find Export chat history on my Mac?

Telegram documents chat export in Telegram Desktop. If you're using the native Telegram for macOS app or the web version, install Telegram Desktop from desktop.telegram.org and export from there.
