We built Tera Chat because our people were scattered across apps.
Most of us talk to the people who matter in five or six places: iMessage with family, WhatsApp with friends abroad, Telegram groups, Instagram DMs, a dating app or two. Every app has its own inbox, its own notifications and its own way of letting a conversation slip. Tera Chat puts all of them in one calm Mac inbox and then helps you show up well in each one.
It's made by Tera Labs, a small, independent software company. Tera Chat is the app we wanted for ourselves: fast, native to the Mac, private by default, and honest about what AI should and shouldn't do in your relationships.
What we believe
- Your conversations belong on your Mac. Tera Chat connects to each network from your own computer. There's no Tera Chat server holding a copy of your inbox to leak, sell or subpoena.
- AI should help you sound like you, not replace you. Drafts are written in your own style, and by default you read and send every message yourself.
- Relationships deserve attention, not just notifications. Tera Chat surfaces the unanswered question, the friend who's drifting and the birthday buried in a group chat, so the people who matter don't fall through the cracks.
- Free should mean free. The app and the unified inbox cost nothing, with no time limit. Paid plans exist only for people who want AI built in with nothing to set up.
Tera Chat at a glance
- What it is
- A native Mac app that puts your messaging apps in one inbox, keeps track of every relationship and drafts replies in your own texting style.
- Networks
- iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder. Hinge is in beta (read-only). Bumble is coming soon.
- Requirements
- A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) running macOS 15 Sequoia or later. There is no Windows, iPhone, Android or web version.
- Price
- The app is free. Optional plans with AI built in: AI Plus $9.99/month, AI Pro $19.99/month, AI Max $49.99/month, plus tax where applicable. Cancel anytime.
- AI
- Use your ChatGPT account (through OpenAI's Codex) or your own Claude or Grok API key at no extra cost, or a Tera Chat AI plan, which runs on Anthropic's Claude.
- Privacy
- Messages are stored on your Mac, never on a Tera Chat server. AI keys stay in the macOS Keychain and chat sign-ins stay on your Mac. AI only sees the conversations it works on, for the features you use or turn on.
- You stay in charge
- Nothing is sent unless you send it. Anything that sends for you is opt-in per service or per chat, with quiet hours, rate limits and an emergency stop.

How we write our guides
We write practical guides about messaging on the Mac, AI replies, dating conversations and staying in touch. Read the Tera Chat blog. The full process, including how we fact-check and correct them, is in our editorial standards.
- Researched, then drafted with AI help. The Tera Chat team researches each guide and drafts it with the help of AI tools, then checks it before it goes up.
- Sources you can check. Facts about other apps come from their own help pages, pricing pages, terms and published studies, which we link, and were checked on the date shown on the guide. Facts about Tera Chat come from the app itself.
- Fair to other apps. When another app is the better pick, we say so, including where Tera Chat falls short.
- Kept current. Apps change. We update guides when they do, and the date at the top of each guide is the last real update. Spotted something wrong? Email hello@terachat.co.
