Telegram on Mac: "Telegram for macOS" vs "Telegram Desktop" vs "Telegram Lite"

Telegram for Mac comes in two official apps and three names. What Telegram for macOS, Telegram Desktop and Telegram Lite are, which to install, and how to log in.

The short answer

  • Telegram makes two official Mac apps: Telegram for macOS, a native Mac app, and Telegram Desktop, the same app that runs on Windows and Linux.
  • Telegram Lite is not a third app: it's the Mac App Store edition of Telegram Desktop, and Telegram's own App Store link for Desktop opens the Telegram Lite listing.
  • Pick Telegram for macOS for a Mac-style app with Secret Chats; pick Telegram Desktop (or Lite) for a three-column layout built for big groups and work.
  • All Telegram apps are free, sync your chats from Telegram's cloud, and work without your phone being online.
  • Direct downloads from telegram.org can be newer than the App Store builds: on 20 October 2026 Desktop was 7.3.1 direct and 7.2.9 as Telegram Lite.

Telegram has two official Mac apps, and three names for them. Telegram for macOS is a native Mac app. Telegram Desktop is the cross-platform app that also runs on Windows and Linux, and its Mac App Store edition is called Telegram Lite. All of them are free, use the same account, and pull your chats from Telegram’s cloud, so the right choice comes down to which design and features you prefer.

Below: a dated comparison of the three (checked 20 October 2026), which one to install, how to log in, and what to do if Telegram is one of several chat apps you check on your Mac.

Versions come from macos.telegram.org, the Telegram Desktop changelog and the App Store listings for Telegram and Telegram Lite.

Why does Telegram have two Mac apps?

Because they grew from two separate projects. Telegram’s FAQ answers this directly in Why do you have two apps in the Mac App Store?: “One is our app for macOS, the other is Telegram Lite, the macOS version of our multi-platform client. Both apps are official.” It adds that both “started out as unofficial applications by two different developers and vary in design and functionality.”

The FAQ describes the native app as supporting “many platform-specific features, such as the MacBook Pro Touch Bar, gesture navigation, integration with the Mac’s Share menu and more”, with “every feature from the iOS version of the app including Secret Chats.” Telegram Lite, it says, is “optimized for work-related tasks and handling large communities” and has “a three-column interface.”

Is Telegram Lite the same as Telegram Desktop?

Yes. The “Mac App Store” button on Telegram Desktop’s download page leads to the App Store listing for Telegram Lite (app ID 946399090, whose web address still reads “telegram-desktop”). Its release notes follow Telegram Desktop’s version numbers, a step or two behind the direct download.

Which Telegram app should you install?

Pick based on how you use Telegram, not on the names.

  • Choose Telegram for macOS if you mostly use Telegram on Apple devices, want an app that looks and behaves like a Mac app, or use Secret Chats on your computer. Telegram’s FAQ confirms Secret Chats for this app; it doesn’t say the same for Telegram Desktop or Lite.
  • Choose Telegram Desktop if you also use Telegram on Windows or Linux and want the same app everywhere, or you live in big groups and channels and like the three-column layout. Download it from desktop.telegram.org for the newest version. For catching up on those big groups, see how to summarize Telegram chats.
  • Choose Telegram Lite if you want Telegram Desktop but prefer App Store installs and updates, and don’t mind it trailing the direct download.
  • Use Telegram Web on a computer that isn’t yours.

Nothing stops you from trying both: they’re separate apps, and Telegram’s FAQ says you can log in “from as many of your devices as you like”, all at once.

How to install Telegram on a Mac and log in

  1. Download your chosen app: Telegram or Telegram Lite from the Mac App Store, or the direct download from macos.telegram.org or desktop.telegram.org. For a direct download, open the .dmg and drag Telegram to Applications.
  2. Open the app and choose to log in. You’ll usually see a QR code first, with an option to use your phone number instead.
  3. With a QR code: on your phone, open Telegram and go to Settings > Devices > Link Desktop Device (on some versions the button is Scan QR Code), then point the camera at the code on your Mac.
  4. With your phone number: enter it, then type the code Telegram sends you (usually as a message in Telegram on your other devices).
  5. If you’ve turned on two-step verification, enter your Telegram password.

Your chats load from Telegram’s cloud. Telegram’s App Store listing says its apps “are standalone, so you don’t need to keep your phone connected.”

Telegram on Mac: things that surprise people

  • Secret Chats don’t follow you. Telegram’s FAQ says “secret chats are not part of the Telegram cloud and can only be accessed on their devices of origin.” A Secret Chat started on your phone never appears on your Mac.
  • Several accounts work. You can log in to one Telegram app with several accounts and switch between them without logging out.
  • App Store builds lag. On 20 October 2026, the native app was 13.0 both directly and in the App Store, but Telegram Desktop was 7.3.1 directly and 7.2.9 as Telegram Lite. If you’re waiting for a fix, the direct download usually gets it first.
  • Notifications are a macOS setting. If alerts don’t show, open System Settings > Notifications > Telegram (or Telegram Lite) and turn on Allow notifications, then check that a Focus mode isn’t silencing it.

Telegram next to WhatsApp, iMessage and Instagram

If Telegram is one of several chat apps you check, you can keep the Telegram app and also see Telegram chats in a unified inbox. Our guide to the best messaging apps for Mac compares the options network by network.

Tera Chat is our app: a free Mac app that brings iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder into one inbox and drafts replies in your own texting style. To add Telegram, go to Settings > Messaging > Telegram > Sign in. It opens Telegram’s own website in a private browser window, you sign in there as you would on web.telegram.org, and then you click Sync History. After that you can read and reply to Telegram chats next to everything else.

What to know first (also on the Tera Chat with Telegram page):

  • It needs Google Chrome, Brave or Microsoft Edge installed for that sign-in window, and a Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 15 or later.
  • Secret Chats stay on the device that started them, so they won’t appear in Tera Chat.
  • Sending from Tera Chat is text only; send photos and files from Telegram’s own app.
  • Tera Chat doesn’t notify you of every new message. Keep Telegram’s app for alerts and calls.
  • Your sign-in and messages stay on your Mac; there’s no Tera Chat server holding your inbox.

Beeper also connects Telegram, and it has apps for Windows, Linux and phones, which Tera Chat doesn’t. The short version

  • Two official apps, three names: Telegram for macOS (native), Telegram Desktop (cross-platform) and Telegram Lite (Desktop’s App Store edition).
  • Want it to feel like a Mac app, with Secret Chats? Install Telegram for macOS.
  • Want the same app as on Windows, or a layout for big groups? Install Telegram Desktop from desktop.telegram.org.
  • Either way, log in with a QR code from Settings > Devices on your phone, and your chats come down from the cloud.

Frequently asked questions

Is Telegram Lite official?

Yes. Telegram's FAQ calls it the macOS version of its multi-platform client and says both Mac App Store apps are official. It's published by Telegram FZ-LLC.

Can I install Telegram for macOS and Telegram Desktop on the same Mac?

Yes. They are separate apps, and Telegram lets you stay logged in on as many devices and apps as you like at the same time.

Do I need my phone to use Telegram on a Mac?

You need your phone number (or an existing Telegram app) to log in, but after that the Mac app works on its own. Telegram's App Store listing says its apps are standalone, so the phone doesn't need to stay connected.

Why can't I see my Secret Chats on my Mac?

Secret Chats are device-specific and not stored in Telegram's cloud, so they only exist on the device where they were started. Start a new Secret Chat from the Mac if you need one there.
