Telegram chat analyzer
Open a Telegram chat export and see who sends more messages, who starts conversations, how fast each person replies and when the chat is busiest. It's free, needs no bot and no login, and the file is read in your browser, never uploaded.
How to export a Telegram chat
You need Telegram Desktop on a Mac, Windows or Linux computer. The phone apps and Telegram Web can't export chats. Mac users often have the other Telegram app, the one called just "Telegram": if you don't see Export chat history, install Telegram Desktop.
- Open the chat in Telegram Desktop and click ⋮ at the top right.
- Click Export chat history.
- Untick photos, videos and files if you only want the text: the export is much faster and the analyzer still counts them.
- Set Format to Machine-readable JSON (not HTML) and click Export.
- Open the
result.jsonit saves in the folder it shows you.
For every chat at once, use Settings, Advanced, Export Telegram data with the format set to JSON. The analyzer lists each chat in that file so you can pick one.
What you'll see
- Who talks more: messages and words per person, and each person's share of the chat.
- Who starts conversations: who sends the first message after 6 or more hours of quiet.
- Reply times: each person's typical (median) reply time, counting replies within 24 hours.
- Double texts: writing again after an hour or more without a reply.
- When you talk: a weekday-by-hour heatmap, the busiest day and the longest streak of days in a row.
- Words and emoji: the ones used most, plus how many photos, stickers, voice messages and files each person sent.
Switch to Chat view and PDF to read the chat as bubbles, search it, or save it as a PDF (the Telegram chat to PDF page opens straight on that view). For what the numbers can and can't tell you, see what each number means.
Your chat stays on your device
Many Telegram stats tools are bots you add to a chat, which means a third party reads it. This analyzer is one script served from this site: it reads your export with the browser's File API and counts everything on your device. It doesn't upload, save or share the file, and it sets no cookies. To check, load this page, turn off Wi-Fi, then open your export: it still works.
Questions
Why can't I find Export chat history in Telegram?
The export is a feature of Telegram Desktop. The phone apps and Telegram Web don't have it, and on a Mac you may be in the other app, the one called just "Telegram". Install Telegram Desktop from desktop.telegram.org (it runs on Mac, Windows and Linux), sign in, and the option is in each chat's ⋮ menu.
Telegram says I have to wait 24 hours. Why?
If you've only just signed in to Telegram Desktop, Telegram can hold the export back for 24 hours as a safety measure, or let it start straight away once you confirm it from another device where you're already signed in.
Does it need a Telegram bot or my login?
No. There's no bot to add and nothing asks for your phone number. You export the chat yourself in Telegram Desktop and open the file here, where it's read in your browser and never uploaded.
Can I analyze my whole Telegram account at once?
Yes. In Telegram Desktop, go to Settings, Advanced, Export Telegram data, tick the chats you want, choose JSON and export. Open the result.json here and the analyzer lists every chat in it so you can pick one.
Are secret chats included?
No. Telegram's export covers cloud chats. Secret chats live only on the devices in them, so they aren't in the file.
Does it work for Telegram groups?
Yes. Every member who wrote in the group gets their own row: messages, share, words per message, conversations started, typical reply time, double texts, media and emoji.
