Free chat analyzer for WhatsApp, Instagram and Telegram

Drop in a chat export and see who sends more messages, who starts conversations, how fast each of you replies, and when you talk most. It's free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser: the file is never uploaded.

How to export your chat

Each app makes its own export. Make it on the device where the chat lives, then open the file here (on a phone, open this page in the phone's browser).

WhatsApp on iPhone

  1. Open the chat and tap the person's or group's name at the top.
  2. Scroll down and tap Export Chat, then Without Media (smaller and faster; the analyzer counts media either way).
  3. Save the .zip to Files, or AirDrop it to your Mac, then choose it above.

WhatsApp on Android

  1. Open the chat and tap ⋮ (More options), then More, then Export chat.
  2. Choose Without media and save or send the file to yourself.
  3. Choose the .txt (or .zip) above.

Telegram

  1. Use Telegram Desktop (Mac, Windows or Linux) and open the chat.
  2. Click ⋮ at the top right, then Export chat history.
  3. Untick photos and files if you only want the text, set the format to Machine-readable JSON, and export.
  4. Choose the result.json it saves.

Instagram

  1. In Instagram, open Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions, then Download your information.
  2. Pick your Instagram account and ask for Messages only, with the format set to JSON (not HTML).
  3. Instagram emails you when the file is ready, which can take a while. Download the .zip and choose it above: the analyzer lists every conversation in it so you can pick one.

Every step, with what to tick: Instagram chat analyzer.

What the numbers mean

Starts
Who sends the first message after 6 or more hours of quiet. It shows who usually opens the conversation.
Typical reply
The median gap between someone's message and the other person's answer, counting answers that came within 24 hours. The median ignores the odd reply that took all day.
Double texts
Writing again after an hour or more without getting a reply in between.
Words per message
Average words in each text message; photos, voice notes and deleted messages aren't counted.
When you talk
Messages by weekday and hour, in your device's time zone. Darker squares mean more messages.
Longest streak
The most days in a row with at least one message.

Numbers describe habits, not feelings. A slow replier might be busy, and the person who starts more conversations might just be the morning person. Use them as a conversation starter, not a verdict. For what a "normal" reply time looks like, see how long is too long to reply to a text.

Your chat stays on your device

The analyzer is a single script served from this site. It reads your file with the browser's File API and does all the counting on your device. It doesn't upload the chat, save it, or set cookies, and closing the tab clears it.

Check it yourself: load this page, turn off Wi-Fi or switch on airplane mode, then analyze a chat. It still works, because nothing needs to be sent. Or open your browser's developer tools on the Network tab while you analyze: no request carries your chat.

Questions

Is the chat analyzer free?

Yes. It's free with no account, no message limit and no paid tier. It's made by Tera Labs, the company behind Tera Chat for Mac.

Is my chat uploaded anywhere?

No. The page reads the file on your own device with your browser's File API. It doesn't upload, save or send the chat anywhere, and it sets no cookies. You can check: load the page, turn off Wi-Fi, then analyze a chat. It still works.

Which chat exports does it read?

A WhatsApp chat export (the .txt, or the .zip WhatsApp makes on iPhone or Android), a Telegram Desktop export in JSON (result.json), and Instagram's "Download your information" messages in JSON, either the whole .zip or the message_1.json files of one conversation.

Does it work for group chats?

Yes. Every person in the chat gets their own row: messages, share, words per message, conversations started, typical reply time, double texts, media and emoji.

Can it analyze iMessage?

No. Apple's Messages app has no export the browser can read. This tool reads WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram exports.

Why don't the numbers match what I remember?

An export holds only what the app put in it. WhatsApp limits how many recent messages one export includes, so a very long chat can arrive without its oldest messages, and messages deleted for everyone aren't in it. Times use your device's time zone.
