Instagram chat analyzer
Open your Instagram message download and see who sends more DMs, who starts the conversation, how fast each of you replies and when you talk most. It's free, it never asks for your Instagram login, and the file is read in your browser, never uploaded.
How to download your Instagram messages
Instagram doesn't export one chat at a time. You ask for a copy of your messages, Instagram prepares it, and you open the file here.
- In the Instagram app, open your profile, tap ☰, then Accounts Center. On the web, click More, then Settings, then Accounts Center.
- Tap Your information and permissions, then Download your information.
- Start a download, pick your Instagram account, and choose Some of your information.
- Tick Messages only. Asking for less keeps the file small.
- Choose Download to device, set Format to JSON (not HTML), and pick the date range you want, such as All time. Media quality doesn't matter here.
- Submit the request. Instagram tells you when the file is ready, which can take a while. The download link expires after a few days, so save the .zip when it arrives.
- Open the .zip above. The analyzer lists every conversation in it; pick one and click Open.
On a phone, open this page in the phone's browser and choose the .zip from Files or Downloads. Large downloads are easier on a computer.
What you'll see
- Who talks more: messages and words per person, and each person's share of the chat.
- Who starts conversations: who sends the first message after 6 or more hours of quiet.
- Reply times: each person's typical (median) reply time, counting replies within 24 hours.
- Double texts: messaging again after an hour or more without a reply.
- When you talk: a weekday-by-hour heatmap, the busiest day and the longest streak of days in a row.
- Words and emoji: the ones used most, plus how many photos, videos and other attachments each person sent.
Switch to Chat view and PDF to read the conversation as bubbles, search it, or save it as a PDF (the Instagram chat to PDF page opens straight on that view). Numbers describe habits, not feelings: see what each number means.
Your messages stay on your device
The analyzer is one script served from this site. It reads the file with your browser's File API and does every count on your device. It doesn't upload, save or share the file, and it sets no cookies. To check, load this page, turn off Wi-Fi, then open your download: it still works.
Questions
Do I have to log in with Instagram?
No. This page never asks for your Instagram password. You download your own messages from Instagram's Accounts Center, then open that file here. The file is read on your device and nothing is uploaded.
Which Instagram file does it need?
Instagram's "Download your information" export of your messages in JSON format. Open the whole .zip Instagram gives you and pick a conversation from the list, or open the message_1.json files from one conversation's folder. The HTML format doesn't work here.
Will the other person know I analyzed our chat?
Nothing on this page contacts Instagram or the other person: the file is read in your browser and the results stay on your screen. The download itself is between you and Instagram.
Why do names with accents or emoji look broken in Instagram's file?
Instagram's JSON stores accented letters and emoji in a garbled encoding, so "José" can show up as "José". The analyzer repairs this, so names, words and emoji display correctly.
Does it work for Instagram group chats?
Yes. Every person in the group gets their own row: messages, share of the chat, words per message, conversations started, typical reply time, double texts, media and emoji.
Why are some messages missing?
The analyzer can only count what's in your download. If you picked a date range shorter than all time, older messages aren't in the file. Likes and reactions aren't counted as messages, and times use your device's time zone.
