Group chat awards: 40 categories, and how to settle some with your chat's real numbers
Group chat awards for your friends: 40 categories, 12 settled by your chat's real numbers from a free analyzer, plus how to run the vote with polls and keep it kind.
The short answer
- Group chat awards work best as a mix: let the chat's own numbers settle the measurable categories, and vote on the funny and sentimental ones.
- A free browser analyzer can measure each person's messages, words, conversation starts, typical reply time and double texts from a WhatsApp, Telegram or Instagram export, plus the chat's busiest day, longest streak, busiest hours, top words and top emoji.
- It can't measure who texts at 3 am: busiest hours are counted for the whole chat, not per person, so make Night Owl a voted award.
- Run the vote with a poll: WhatsApp polls can hide voter names and limit everyone to one vote, which makes a fair secret ballot.
- Ask the group before analyzing the chat, give everyone at least one award, and skip categories that would embarrass someone.
Group chat awards are end-of-year superlatives for your friends’ chat: the group nominates and votes on titles like Funniest Message or Group Therapist, and hands them out over dinner or a call. The fairest version lets the chat’s real numbers settle the measurable awards (most messages, conversation starter, fastest replier, double-text champion, emoji of the year) and puts the rest to a vote. Below are 40 categories, how to get those numbers free from a WhatsApp, Telegram or Instagram export without uploading the chat, and how to run the vote with each app’s polls.
Everything about the polls was checked against Apple’s, WhatsApp’s, Telegram’s and Instagram’s own help pages and announcements on 20 October 2026.
Awards your chat’s numbers can settle
These 12 categories come straight from the free chat analyzer, which reads a chat export in your browser. The first seven are per person; the last five describe the whole chat.
| Award | Who wins | Where to find it in the analyzer |
|---|---|---|
| The Main Character | Most messages sent | Messages |
| The Ice Breaker | Most conversation starts (first message after 6 or more hours of quiet) | Starts |
| The Lightning Replier | Shortest typical (median) reply time | Typical reply |
| The Thoughtful Replier | Longest typical reply time (they get there) | Typical reply |
| Double Text Champion | Most double texts (writing again after an hour or more with no reply) | Double texts |
| The Novelist | Most words per message | Words per message |
| Master of the One-Liner | Fewest words per message | Words per message |
| Emoji of the Year | The chat’s most-used emoji | Most-used emoji |
| Word of the Year | The chat’s most-used word | Most-used words |
| The Day the Chat Broke | The date with the most messages | Busiest day |
| Peak Chat Hours | When the group talks most | Messages by weekday and hour |
| The Streak | Most consecutive days with at least one message | Longest streak |
What the numbers can’t tell you: who texts at 3 am. The analyzer’s weekday-and-hour chart covers the whole chat, not each person, so Night Owl and Early Bird belong in the voted list. It also counts only what’s in the file you open, so for edited or partial exports treat the numbers as close, not exact.
28 awards to put to a vote
The best categories are specific to your group, so treat these as a starting list and swap in your own inside jokes.
For the funny ones:
- Funniest Message of the Year. Nominate the exact message (with the sender’s OK).
- Best Comeback.
- Best Meme Dealer.
- Best Reaction GIF or Sticker.
- Best Autocorrect Fail. Keep it to typos, not people.
- Most Dramatic Retelling of a Normal Event.
- Most Likely to Say “On My Way” From Bed.
- Best Inside Joke Origin Story.
- The Moment We’ll Never Let Go Of. Only if the person laughs about it too.
- Emoji Royalty. Whose emoji everyone would recognize anywhere.
- The Photo Dumper. The one who sends forty pictures at once.
For the warm ones:
- The Hype Person. First to cheer everyone’s news.
- Group Therapist. Best advice, given at any hour.
- Most Wholesome Message.
- Best Life Update.
- Proudest Moment of the Year. Something someone in the group did.
- Quiet Legend. Says little, reads everything, always shows up in person.
- Lifetime Achievement. Whoever started the chat or keeps it alive.
- Rookie of the Year. The newest member.
For the practical ones:
- Best Plan That Actually Happened.
- Most Reliable RSVP.
- Best Recommendation. A song, show, book or restaurant the group loved.
- Best Photo Shared.
- Best Voice Note.
- Best Poll.
- Best Group Name Change. If you need fresh material, see our group chat names.
- Night Owl. The numbers can’t settle this one per person.
- Early Bird. Same.
That’s 40 in total. For a ceremony people enjoy, pick 15 to 25 and make sure everyone wins something.
How to get your group chat’s numbers, without uploading it
The analyzer runs in any modern browser on a Mac, Windows PC or phone, needs no account, and is free with no message limit. The chat file is read on your own device and never uploaded; nothing is saved or sent anywhere. It works for group chats as well as one-to-one chats.
- On your phone, open the group and tap the group’s name (iPhone), or tap ⋮ > More (Android).
- Tap Export chat and choose Without media (WhatsApp Help Center).
- Save or send the export (a .txt or .zip file) to the device you’ll use, open the chat analyzer, and choose the file.
Choosing Without media keeps the file small. Two catches: WhatsApp’s phone export has no date option, but if the export covers more than one calendar year, the analyzer’s Messages from menu lets you pick just this year (it also shows the first and last dates it found). And a group with Restricted chat turned on can’t be exported at all (WhatsApp Help Center). Use an export made on the iPhone or Android app.
Telegram
In Telegram Desktop, open the group, click ⋮ > Export chat history, set the dates to this year, choose Machine-readable JSON, and open the result.json it saves in the Telegram chat analyzer. The native Telegram for macOS app doesn’t have this export.
Request your messages from Instagram’s Download your information in JSON format, then open the message_1.json files (or the whole download ZIP) in the Instagram chat analyzer and pick the group. Our guide to exporting chats on a Mac has every step for all three apps.
iMessage
The analyzer doesn’t read iMessage. On a Mac, free community tools can count your Messages history if you give them Full Disk Access; our guide to iMessage Wrapped compares them and explains that permission.
For the two most argued-about awards, the who texts first? and WhatsApp reply time pages use the same analyzer and explain how conversation starts and reply times are counted.
For a card to post in the chat, WhatsApp Wrapped opens the same analyzer on the export’s latest calendar year and adds a year-in-review card: who texts the most, who starts the chat, the fastest replier, the biggest double texter, the longest streak, the busiest day, the top 3 emoji and the most-used word (each tile appears only when there’s something to show). Save as image makes a 1080×1920 picture on your device. It takes Telegram and Instagram exports too.
How to run the awards in the chat
A host, a deadline and a poll per category keep it from dragging on for weeks.
- Ask the group first. Something like: “Doing group chat awards this year. OK if I run our chat through a stats tool? It stays on my phone and I’ll only share the results.” If anyone objects, skip the measured awards or leave them out of the stats.
- Pick a host. One person runs the analyzer, collects nominations and posts the polls.
- Collect nominations. Give everyone a few days to message the host privately with nominees for the voted categories.
- Vote. One poll per category, with a closing time.
- Hold the ceremony. Announce results over dinner, on a call, or in one long message with the winners in order. Read the measured awards first: the numbers are the warm-up, the voted awards are the main event.
Polls for the vote, by app (October 2026)
| App | Options per poll | Secret ballot | One vote each | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 12 | Yes: Hide voter names | Yes: turn off Allow multiple answers (on by default) | You can set an end time; settings can’t be changed after sending (WhatsApp) | |
| iMessage | Up to 12 | Not offered; Poll Details shows how people voted | No: people can vote for several options | Needs iOS 26, macOS 26 or later; anyone can add an option (Apple) |
| Telegram | Not stated in Telegram’s announcement | Yes: polls can be anonymous | Yes, unless you allow multiple answers | Quiz mode, with one correct answer, suits a trivia round about the group’s year (Telegram) |
| Not listed on the page we checked | Not listed | Not listed | Group chats of three or more accounts; anyone can add options; phone apps only, not on a computer (Instagram) |
For a fair secret ballot, WhatsApp is the easiest: create the poll, switch on Hide voter names, switch off Allow multiple answers, and set an end time. On iMessage, ask people to vote once and trust them.
Keep it fun for everyone
Awards are supposed to make the group feel closer, so set a few ground rules:
- Everyone gets at least one award. Add categories until that’s true.
- Nothing about bodies, money, exes or dating lives unless the person nominates themselves.
- No award for the quietest person. People read along for all sorts of reasons. “Quiet Legend” celebrates them instead.
- Get the sender’s OK before quoting a message in Funniest Message of the Year, and never screenshot a private message into another chat.
- Let people opt out of the stats, no explanation needed.
- The numbers aren’t a friendship score. A slow replier with a newborn or a night shift isn’t a worse friend. Our guide to texting etiquette has more on reading reply times kindly.
After the awards
The awards are a good excuse to restart a chat that’s gone quiet, or to finally book the trip that’s been “we should” all year. If someone’s been missing, a direct message works better than an award: our guide to keeping in touch with friends has a simple system for it.
If your groups are spread over WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram and Instagram, Tera Chat for Mac (from the makers of the free analyzer) shows them in one inbox and can summarize a group you’ve fallen behind on, once you set up AI. It’s free and needs a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) and macOS 15 or later.
The short version
- Ask the group, pick a host.
- Export the chat and open it in the chat analyzer for the 12 measured awards.
- Collect nominations for the voted awards.
- Run a WhatsApp poll per category with hidden names and one vote each, or the closest your app allows.
- Hand out the awards, make sure everyone wins one, and keep it kind.
Frequently asked questions
What are good group chat award categories?
Mix measurable ones (most messages, conversation starter, fastest replier, double texter, emoji of the year, busiest day) with voted ones (funniest message, best voice note, group therapist, plan that actually happened). About 15 to 25 categories keeps a ceremony short enough to enjoy.
How do I see who texts the most in a group chat?
Export the group from WhatsApp on your phone, Telegram Desktop or Instagram's Download your information, and open the file in the free chat analyzer at terachat.co. It counts messages and each person's share of them on your own device, without uploading the chat.
Can I get group chat stats for iMessage?
Not from Apple, and the chat analyzer doesn't read iMessage. On a Mac, free community tools can read your Messages history if you grant them Full Disk Access; our iMessage Wrapped guide explains the options and the risks.
Is it okay to analyze a group chat without asking?
Ask first. The file is read on your own device and never uploaded, but the messages belong to everyone in the group, and some people won't want their texting habits turned into awards. Share only the results, never screenshots of private messages.
When should we do group chat awards?
Late December is the classic time, as a year in review before New Year's Eve. A group's anniversary, the end of a school year or the last night of a trip work just as well.
