WhatsApp reply time checker
Open a WhatsApp chat export and see how fast each of you usually replies, measured from every message in the chat, not from memory. It's free, needs no login, and the file is read in your browser, never uploaded.

Export the chat first
iPhone: open the chat, tap the name at the top, scroll down and tap Export Chat, then Without Media. Save the .zip to Files or AirDrop it to your Mac.
Android: open the chat, tap ⋮, then More, then Export chat, and choose Without media.
Then choose the file above. Your typical reply time is in the summary at the top and in the Typical reply column of the table.
How the reply time is worked out
- One reply, one gap: when the other person writes and you answer, the gap runs from their last message to your first one. Three quick messages in a row from them count as one thing to reply to.
- 24 hours at most: answers that came more than a day later are left out, so a chat that went quiet for a week doesn't swamp the number. Overnight replies within 24 hours still count.
- The median, not the average: half your replies were faster than the typical reply time and half were slower. One reply that took all day barely moves it.
- Your time zone: times are shown in the time zone of the device you open the file on.
Is my reply time normal?
There's no proper study of everyday reply times to compare against. The most-quoted figure comes from a 2026 survey by EZ Texting, an SMS marketing company, in which 82% of 959 US consumers said they reply to a text within 15 minutes, and the company applies that to texts from businesses. Our texting statistics page lists every reply-speed figure we found and how much each is worth.
What matters more is the match between two people. If you both reply within an hour, nobody is waiting; if one of you answers in minutes and the other in half a day, that difference is worth a conversation. For reply windows by situation, read how long is too long to reply to a text.
What can skew the number
- Old messages missing: WhatsApp limits how many recent messages one export holds, so a very long chat may arrive without its oldest part.
- Calls and real life: if you sorted something out on a call or in person, the chat shows a slow reply that wasn't one.
- Busy days and nights: a median over a year mixes work weeks, holidays and time zones. Compare people within the same chat rather than against a stranger's numbers.
Reply times describe habits, not feelings. Someone who's slow to answer might be busy, anxious about getting it right, or simply not a texter; attachment styles and texting explains why the same gap feels so different to different people.
Your chat stays on your device
The checker is one script served from this site. It reads the export with your browser's File API and does every calculation on your device. Nothing is uploaded or saved, and closing the tab clears it. To check, load this page, turn off Wi-Fi, then open your export: it still works.
Questions
Can WhatsApp show me how fast someone replies?
No. WhatsApp shows ticks, and last seen if the other person allows it, but no reply-time figure. To get one, export the chat and open it in a tool like this, which measures every reply in the file.
Why use the median instead of the average?
Because one slow reply can wreck an average. Replies of 2, 3 and 4 minutes plus one of 10 hours average out at about two and a half hours, which describes none of them. The median of those four is 3.5 minutes, which is how fast that person usually replies.
Does a reply the next morning count?
Yes, if it came within 24 hours of the message it answers. A message sent at 11 pm and answered at 8 am counts as a 9-hour reply. Anything slower than 24 hours is left out of the typical reply time.
Does it work for group chats?
Yes, but read it loosely. In a group, any message right after someone else's counts as a reply to it, even if it was really meant for a third person.
Is the chat uploaded anywhere?
No. The page reads the export on your own device with the browser's File API and works it out there. It doesn't upload, save or share the chat, and it sets no cookies.
Can I check Telegram or Instagram reply times too?
Yes. The same analyzer reads Telegram Desktop's JSON export and Instagram's message download. See the Telegram and Instagram chat analyzer pages for how to export each one.
