How long can you unsend or edit a message? iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram and Telegram
How long can you unsend or edit a message? The 2026 time limits for iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram and Telegram, with iPhone and Mac steps from each app's help pages.
The short answer
- iMessage lets you unsend a message within 2 minutes and edit it up to five times within 15 minutes, on iPhone and on a Mac. Green-bubble SMS, MMS and RCS texts can't be unsent or edited.
- WhatsApp lets you edit a text message for 15 minutes and delete a message for everyone for two days after you send it.
- Instagram lets you edit a DM up to five times within 15 minutes, and its help page gives no time limit for unsending.
- Telegram lets you delete any message in a one-to-one chat for both people at any time, without leaving a trace. Its edit window is set by Telegram's servers and isn't published.
- Unsending removes a message from the chat, not from the other person's memory. If they may have read it, one short, honest follow-up does more than the unsend.
How long you can unsend or edit a message depends on the app. iMessage gives you 2 minutes to unsend and 15 minutes to edit, up to five times. WhatsApp lets you edit for 15 minutes and delete for everyone for two days. Instagram lets you edit for 15 minutes, up to five times, and gives no time limit for unsending. Telegram lets you delete a message in a one-to-one chat for both people at any time, and doesn’t publish its edit limit.
Below: one table with every limit (taken from each company’s help pages on 21 October 2026), the steps on iPhone and Mac, what the other person sees, and what to send when a message has already gone to the wrong person.
Unsend and edit time limits by app (checked 21 October 2026)
Every limit below comes from the app’s own help page, linked in the last column.
| App | Unsend or delete for everyone | Edit | What the other person sees | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iMessage (iPhone, iPad, Mac) | Within 2 minutes (Undo Send) | Up to 5 times within 15 minutes | A note that you unsent a message; Edited on an edited one, with earlier versions they can open | Apple, iPhone, Apple, Mac |
| SMS, MMS and RCS texts (green bubbles) | Not possible | Not possible | The message as you sent it | Same Apple pages |
| Within 2 days (Delete for everyone) | Within 15 minutes, text only (not photos, videos or other media) | “This message was deleted”; “edited” next to the time | WhatsApp, delete, WhatsApp, edit | |
| No time limit given (Unsend) | Up to 5 times within 15 minutes | The message is gone from the chat; Edited above an edited one | Instagram, unsend, Instagram, edit | |
| Telegram | Any time in a one-to-one chat, for both people; in groups, your own messages | For a limited time that Telegram doesn’t publish | No trace of a deleted message; an “edited” label | Telegram FAQ, Telegram |
Three things the table can’t show:
- Both sides need a current app. iMessage unsend and edit need iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, macOS 13, visionOS 1 or later on the other person’s device too. WhatsApp says you and the recipients must be on the latest version for Delete for everyone.
- Unsending doesn’t unread. WhatsApp warns that recipients “might see your message before it’s deleted”, and Instagram says the people you sent it to “may have already seen your message”.
- Edits show. Every app above marks an edited message, and iMessage lets both people see the earlier versions.
iMessage: Undo Send and Edit on iPhone and Mac
On iMessage you can unsend a message for up to 2 minutes and edit it up to five times within 15 minutes of sending it. It only works for blue-bubble iMessages: Apple says “you can’t edit or unsend SMS, MMS, or RCS text messages” (Apple).
On iPhone
- Open the conversation in Messages.
- Touch and hold the message bubble.
- Tap Undo Send to unsend it, or tap Edit, make your changes and confirm them.
On a Mac
- Open Messages and select the conversation.
- Control-click the message (or the attachment, to unsend one).
- Choose Undo Send, or choose Edit (Apple also lists ⌘E), make your changes and press Return.
The Mac follows the same limits as the iPhone (Apple). For more Messages shortcuts, see our list of Mac messaging keyboard shortcuts.
What the other person sees
- After Undo Send: a note that you unsent a message appears in both conversations, and the message is removed from their device.
- After an edit: the bubble updates on both sides and is marked Edited. Either of you can tap or click Edited to see the earlier versions.
- If their software is older than iOS 16 or macOS 13: an unsent message stays on their device, and Messages tells you they may still see it. Edits arrive as follow-up messages starting “Edited to”, with your new text in quotation marks.
- In a group with green bubbles: only the people using iMessage see your edits.
Deleting isn’t unsending
Deleting a message in Messages changes only your side of the conversation. Apple’s guide is direct: “When you want to delete a message for everyone, use Undo Send within 2 minutes of sending it” (Apple). A deleted message waits in View > Recently Deleted on a Mac for up to 30 days, but a message you remove with Undo Send is deleted permanently. With Messages in iCloud on, deleting on your Mac removes the message from your other Apple devices as well.
WhatsApp: edit for 15 minutes, delete for everyone for 2 days
WhatsApp lets you edit any text message for 15 minutes and request Delete for everyone for two days after you send it (WhatsApp).
Edit a message
- iPhone: long-press the message, tap Edit, change the text and confirm.
- Mac or WhatsApp Web: hover over the message, open its menu and choose Edit message.
The edited message shows “edited” next to its time. Editing doesn’t send a new notification, and you can’t edit photos, videos or other media (WhatsApp). Someone on an old version of WhatsApp sees a line saying the message was edited, instead of the new text.
Delete a message for everyone
- iPhone: touch and hold the message, tap Delete, then the delete button, then Delete for Everyone.
- Mac or WhatsApp Web: open the message’s menu, then choose Delete and Delete for everyone.
The message is replaced with “This message was deleted”. Read the small print before relying on it:
- You have two days from sending to request it.
- You won’t be told if deleting for everyone didn’t work.
- Recipients using WhatsApp on an iPhone might still have the photos or videos you sent saved in their Photos app.
- In groups, admins can also delete other people’s messages for everyone within two days, and members see which admin did it.
Delete for me is different: it removes only your copy, and the other person still sees the message. WhatsApp gives you 5 seconds to undo it.
Instagram: unsend with no stated limit, edit for 15 minutes
Instagram’s help page gives no time limit for unsending a DM, and lets you edit one for up to 15 minutes, five times per message.
Unsend a message
- Phone: in Messages, open the chat, tap and hold the message, then tap Unsend.
- Computer: click Messages, open the conversation, click Options next to the message, then Unsend and Unsend again to confirm.
Once unsent, the message “will no longer be visible to people included in the chat”, but Instagram adds that they may have seen it already. Unsent messages aren’t in your Instagram data download, though they can be included if someone reports the chat or a message around it (Instagram). Unsending, editing and deleting are also the only controls Instagram gives you over messages that others in a chat could share with Meta AI, as our guide to turning off Meta AI explains.
Edit a message
Open the chat, click Options (or tap and hold on a phone) on a message you sent recently, choose Edit, change the text and send it. Edited appears above it. Instagram’s rules (Instagram):
- Up to 15 minutes after sending, and up to five edits per message.
- Messages with mentions or commands can’t be edited, only unsent.
- An unread notification is replaced with your edited message, but anyone who already read the original has seen it.
Telegram: delete for both people at any time
Telegram is the most forgiving of the four. Its FAQ says: “You can always delete any messages you sent or received for both sides in any one-on-one conversation (in groups, it’s still your own messages only)”, and you can also clear a whole chat history on both ends. Deleted messages don’t leave a mark in the chat (Telegram FAQ).
To edit, tap and hold a message and choose Edit; on desktop, the up arrow key edits your last message, and edited messages carry an “edited” label (Telegram). There is a time limit: Telegram’s developer documentation says only messages younger than an age set by Telegram’s servers can be edited (Telegram). Telegram doesn’t publish that number on its help pages, so if Edit no longer appears on an old message, delete it and send a corrected one.
Sent it to the wrong person? What to do next
Unsend it if the app still lets you, then decide whether the person might have seen it. If they might have, a short, plain message is kinder than silence or a string of apologies.
- Unsend first. On iMessage the clock is 2 minutes, so do this before anything else.
- Don’t explain in five messages. One line is enough.
- If it held something sensitive, such as a password or an account number, treat it as seen: change the password, and don’t rely on the unsend.
- If it was about them, an honest apology works better than pretending it didn’t happen. Our guide on how to apologize over text has examples.
Example follow-ups, made up for this guide:
| Situation | Example message |
|---|---|
| Harmless, meant for someone else | “Sorry, that was meant for someone else. Ignore me.” |
| You unsent it, but they may have seen it | “I unsent that because it went to the wrong chat. Nothing to worry about.” |
| Awkward, and they probably read it | “That message wasn’t meant for you, and I’m sorry if it landed badly. Happy to talk about it if you’d like.” |
| A typo that changed the meaning | “*Not free on Friday, sorry. Autocorrect.” |
| Sent half-finished | “Hit send too early. What I meant to say was: …” |
If you keep wondering whether they saw it before you unsent it, our guide to how to tell if someone read your message covers read receipts in each app.
Fewer messages to take back
Most unsends are messages sent too fast or to the wrong chat. Two habits help:
- Schedule instead of sending. If a message is better read in the morning, schedule it and you can still change your mind before it goes. See how to schedule a text on a Mac.
- See where a reply is going. If you answer people across several apps on a Mac, Tera Chat (our free app) puts iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder in one inbox, with each chat tinted by the app it came from. Its AI reply drafts wait for you to read, edit and send them. It needs a Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 15 or later; to compare it with other ways of reading your chats on a computer, start with the best messaging apps for Mac or how to combine WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram and Instagram in one app.
The short version
- iMessage: unsend within 2 minutes, edit within 15 minutes (five times). Not for green bubbles.
- WhatsApp: edit within 15 minutes, delete for everyone within 2 days.
- Instagram: unsend with no stated limit, edit within 15 minutes (five times).
- Telegram: delete for both people any time in a one-to-one chat; the edit window isn’t published.
- Every app: the other person may already have read it, so unsend fast and follow up honestly if it matters.
Frequently asked questions
Can you unsend a text message on iPhone?
Only an iMessage (a blue bubble), and only within 2 minutes of sending it. Apple says you can't edit or unsend SMS, MMS or RCS messages, so a green-bubble text stays as you sent it.
Does the other person know when you unsend or edit a message?
On most apps, yes. iMessage adds a note to both conversations when you unsend and labels edits, with earlier versions one tap away. WhatsApp shows "This message was deleted" and "edited", and Instagram shows Edited. Telegram is the exception: a deleted message leaves no mark.
What happens if I unsend an iMessage to someone with an old iPhone?
If their device runs something older than iOS 16 or macOS 13, the original message stays on it, and Messages tells you they may still see it. Edits reach them as separate messages that start with "Edited to".
Can I delete a WhatsApp message for everyone after two days?
No. WhatsApp gives you two days after sending to request Delete for everyone. After that, Delete for me removes only your own copy.
If I delete a message on my Mac, is it gone for the other person?
No. Deleting in Messages changes only your side of the conversation. To remove a message for both of you, use Undo Send within 2 minutes. With Messages in iCloud, a message you delete on the Mac also disappears from your other Apple devices.
