Can you turn off Meta AI in WhatsApp and Instagram? (2026)

How to turn off Meta AI in WhatsApp and Instagram (October 2026): what has an off switch, what doesn't, Restricted chat, deleting Meta AI chats and what Meta sees.

The short answer

  • As of October 2026 there is no setting that removes Meta AI from WhatsApp or Instagram. Meta calls it optional: it only acts when you or someone in the chat uses it.
  • In WhatsApp you can turn off message summaries and writing help (Settings > Chats > Private Processing, off by default), delete your Meta AI chats, and erase Meta AI's copy with the /reset-ai or /reset-all-ais commands.
  • To stop everyone in a WhatsApp chat from using Meta AI on it, turn on Restricted chat. It also blocks exporting the chat, auto-saving media and using linked devices such as WhatsApp on a computer for that chat.
  • On Instagram, when anyone in a chat uses an AI feature, messages from the past 30 days can be shared with Meta AI. Your only controls are deleting, unsending or editing messages.
  • Avoid modded apps that promise to remove Meta AI: WhatsApp says unofficial apps can get your account temporarily or permanently banned.

No: as of October 2026, neither WhatsApp nor Instagram has a setting that removes Meta AI completely. Meta describes it as optional, so it only acts when you, or someone in your chat, uses it. What you can do in WhatsApp is turn off message summaries and writing help, delete your Meta AI chats and Meta’s copy of them, and turn on Restricted chat so nobody in a chat can use Meta AI on it. On Instagram, your only controls are deleting, unsending or editing your messages.

This guide shows what each setting does, step by step, what Meta says Meta AI can see, and why the “remove Meta AI” mods are a bad idea. Every claim comes from WhatsApp’s and Instagram’s own Help Centers and Meta’s newsroom, read on 20 October 2026. Meta changes these features often, so check the linked pages if a menu has moved.

Does WhatsApp have a Meta AI off switch?

No. WhatsApp’s Help Center calls Meta AI “an optional service from Meta” and lists what it can do: chats with Meta AI, Meta AI in existing group chats, AI-generated images, and forwarding messages to it with questions (WhatsApp Help Center). It doesn’t describe any setting that removes it, and some people see a round Meta AI button on the Chats tab that the Help Center offers no way to hide.

How-to sites disagree about whether a “show Meta AI button” toggle exists. WhatsApp’s Help Center doesn’t document one, and it says it tests different ways to reach Meta AI, so some users may have seen options that others never got.

What WhatsApp does give you is four smaller controls.

1. Turn off message summaries and writing help

These two features (summarizing unread messages and rewriting your drafts) sit behind one setting. WhatsApp says it’s off by default and currently supports English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish (WhatsApp Help Center).

  1. Open WhatsApp Settings.
  2. Tap Chats > Private Processing.
  3. Turn Private Processing features off.

With it off, you no longer see options to summarize messages or get writing help in your chats. Our guide to WhatsApp message summaries and Writing Help covers who has them.

2. Delete your chats with Meta AI, and Meta AI’s copy

Deleting a Meta AI chat removes it from your device; erasing what Meta AI kept takes a command. Per WhatsApp (Help Center):

  • Delete a chat: open your chat with Meta AI and delete it like any other chat. Deleted chats can’t be restored.
  • Reset one chat: in the chat with Meta AI, type /reset-ai and send it. This deletes Meta AI’s copy of messages and information from that chat.
  • Reset everything: type /reset-all-ais and send it to reset all the individual and group chats you’ve used Meta AI in.

3. Turn on Restricted chat to keep Meta AI out of a chat

Restricted chat is WhatsApp’s per-chat privacy lock. When it’s on, nobody in that chat can (WhatsApp Help Center):

  • save its media to their phone’s gallery automatically,
  • export the chat,
  • use Meta AI features in it,
  • use linked devices for it. WhatsApp says this “helps to prevent people in the chat from using unofficial clients or AI agents to access it.”

How to turn it on (iPhone):

  1. Open the chat and tap the contact’s or group’s name.
  2. Tap Restricted chat and turn it on.

In a one-to-one chat either person can turn it on or off; in a group, only admins can. It can only be changed on your phone (your primary device), and only in the latest version of WhatsApp.

Things to know before you rely on it:

  • It replaces Advanced chat privacy. Chats where you’d turned on Advanced chat privacy don’t switch over automatically. Open the chat, tap the name (in a group, then Advanced chat privacy), and tap Upgrade > Continue.
  • Old versions slip through. WhatsApp warns that people who aren’t on the latest version may still be able to use unofficial clients or AI agents, and you won’t be told who that is.
  • Your computer is left out of that chat. Because linked devices are blocked, WhatsApp on your Mac or WhatsApp Web can’t be used for a restricted chat, and neither can any app that connects as a linked device, including unified inboxes like Tera Chat.
  • It’s about other people. WhatsApp says Meta AI “can only read the messages people choose to send it”, with or without Restricted chat. The setting stops anyone in the chat from choosing to.

Meta AI searches the web by default to give current answers in Incognito chats, side chats and group chats where Meta AI with Private Processing is a member. You can switch it off for Incognito chats with Meta AI: Settings > Chats > Private Processing > Web search (WhatsApp Help Center). WhatsApp says the search query is sent to select search engines “without connecting the search to your account” (About Meta AI web search).

What can Meta AI see in WhatsApp?

Less than many posts claim, but more than nothing. WhatsApp’s own wording (About Meta AI):

  • Your personal chats stay end-to-end encrypted. “Only messages that mention @Meta AI, or that people choose to share with Meta AI, can be read by Meta.”
  • Private Processing features are designed to be unreadable to Meta. Summaries, writing help and side chats (asking Meta AI privately about one of your chats) run through Private Processing, which WhatsApp says lets Meta AI use the chat for context “without Meta or WhatsApp being able to access them” (side chat).
  • What you send to Meta AI directly is different. Meta receives your prompts, the messages you share and your feedback, and “may use” them to improve its AI.
  • Other Meta accounts can be involved. In some countries, Meta AI may use information from the Facebook or Instagram accounts you’ve added to your Meta Account (Accounts Center is gradually being renamed Meta Account), and things like your interests, age and location.

The ads question: since 16 December 2025, Meta uses your interactions with its AI to personalize content and ads in most regions. Conversations about religion, sexual orientation, politics, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs or trade union membership aren’t used for ads, and your Meta AI chats on WhatsApp aren’t used across Meta’s apps unless you’ve added WhatsApp to an Accounts Center (Meta, 1 October 2025).

Can you turn off Meta AI on Instagram?

No. Instagram builds Meta AI into chats (you can mention @Meta AI in a reply), search, chat summaries and message writing, and none of the Help Center articles we read offers a way to switch it off.

What Instagram shares, and when. Instagram’s Help Center says that when you or others use AI features on messages or content in your chats, “messages from the past 30 days are shared”, so people can share your messages and photos with Meta AI (Instagram Help Center). It advises not sharing passwords, financial details or other sensitive information in chats you don’t want AI to use. Meta says it tries to remove some personal identifiers before using shared messages to improve its AI.

Your controls on Instagram:

  • Delete your Meta AI chats and change or delete the information you’ve given it (the same Help Center page links the steps).
  • Delete, unsend or edit messages you don’t want others to be able to share. Instagram names these as the way to keep messages out of AI features. For how long each app gives you, see how long you can unsend or edit a message.
  • Use a different app for sensitive conversations. That’s the honest answer if you need a guarantee.

On a Mac: Instagram’s Help Center lists “Use Meta AI on Instagram” as a feature that “isn’t available on computers”, so instagram.com in your browser doesn’t show it (Instagram Help Center). That doesn’t stop someone in your chat using it on their phone.

Should you use a modded app to remove Meta AI?

No. Modified WhatsApp apps and tweaks that promise a Meta AI-free WhatsApp are unofficial apps. WhatsApp’s Help Center describes unofficial apps as fake WhatsApp apps made by third parties, and warns that linking your account to one “may result in a temporary or permanent account ban” or let your account be used to send spam and scams (WhatsApp Help Center). Trading a button you don’t like for the risk of losing your account isn’t worth it.

The same warning applies to any unofficial app that connects to WhatsApp, including unified inboxes, so it’s worth knowing before you connect one. Our guide to whether all-in-one messaging apps are safe weighs that risk.

If you want AI help without Meta AI

Turning Meta AI off doesn’t have to mean no AI at all. Your options, from most to least private:

  1. No AI. Read and reply yourself. Nothing leaves the chat.
  2. Paste a few messages into an AI you chose, such as ChatGPT or Claude, and only what you paste goes to that company. Remove names and numbers first.
  3. A Mac app that works across your chats with the AI you pick. Tera Chat for Mac (our app) brings WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder into one inbox. Its AI does nothing until you set it up, and then runs on the provider you choose: your ChatGPT account through OpenAI’s Codex, your own Claude or Grok API key, or a Tera Chat AI plan, which runs on Anthropic’s Claude. Be aware that once AI is set up, some features run in the background (for example a summary after every 10 new messages and a Sunday digest); you can pause that in Settings > Pipelines. Tera Chat isn’t affiliated with Meta and connects to WhatsApp unofficially, as a linked device the way WhatsApp Web does, so WhatsApp’s block on linked devices in restricted chats applies to it. It needs a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) and macOS 15 or later.

How these compare in detail is in our guide to AI for WhatsApp replies, and if you only want the gist of a busy group, see how to summarize a WhatsApp group chat.

The short version

  • There’s no off switch for Meta AI in WhatsApp or Instagram (October 2026).
  • WhatsApp: leave Private Processing features off, delete Meta AI chats, send /reset-all-ais to erase Meta AI’s copy, and turn on Restricted chat where it matters (it also blocks exports and linked devices).
  • Instagram: anyone in a chat can share the last 30 days of messages with Meta AI; delete or unsend what you don’t want shared.
  • Skip the mods. They put your account at risk.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove Meta AI from WhatsApp completely?

No. As of October 2026, WhatsApp's Help Center describes Meta AI as optional but documents no setting that removes it from the app. You can ignore it, delete your chats with it, turn off message summaries and writing help, and use Restricted chat in chats you want kept out of it.

Can Meta AI read my WhatsApp messages?

WhatsApp says Meta can only read messages that mention @Meta AI or that people choose to share with Meta AI, and that personal chats stay end-to-end encrypted. Features that use Private Processing, such as summaries and side chats, are designed so that Meta can't read the messages either.

Can you turn off Meta AI on Instagram?

Not as of October 2026. None of the Instagram Help Center articles we read describes an off switch. You can delete chats with Meta AI, and delete, unsend or edit messages you don't want others in a chat to share with it.

Does deleting my Meta AI chat delete Meta's copy?

Not by itself. WhatsApp says you need commands to delete Meta AI's copy: type /reset-ai in a chat with Meta AI to reset that chat, or /reset-all-ais to reset every chat you've used Meta AI in.

Is Restricted chat the same as Advanced chat privacy?

Restricted chat replaces Advanced chat privacy in the latest version of WhatsApp and adds one more control: nobody can use linked devices for that chat. Chats that already had Advanced chat privacy don't switch over automatically; open the chat info and tap Upgrade.
