AI for WhatsApp replies in 2026: what Meta offers and what's allowed
AI for WhatsApp replies: Meta AI's Writing Help and summaries, the 2026 rule on ChatGPT-style chatbots, and how to get replies in your own style (Oct 2026).
The short answer
- Inside WhatsApp, Meta AI can rewrite a draft in a different tone (Writing Help) and summarize unread messages, but features vary by country and language and Meta doesn't describe them as learning how you text.
- Since 15 January 2026, Meta allows general-purpose AI chatbots such as ChatGPT on WhatsApp's business platform only where it's legally required: as of October 2026, the EEA, Brazil and Türkiye.
- That rule is about AI companies running chatbots on WhatsApp. It doesn't stop you pasting a chat into ChatGPT or Claude, and it doesn't cover businesses using AI for their own customer service.
- WhatsApp's terms bar auto-messaging, so tools that send replies for you on a personal account are the riskiest option; drafts you read and send yourself are the safe pattern.
- For replies in your own style, give an AI samples of your messages, or use an app that learns from them, such as Tera Chat on a Mac.
For personal WhatsApp chats in October 2026, you have three kinds of AI help. Meta AI inside WhatsApp can rewrite a message you’ve drafted in a different tone (Writing Help) and summarize unread messages, where those features are available. A general AI like ChatGPT or Claude can draft a reply if you paste the chat in. And third-party apps can read your WhatsApp chats and draft replies in your own style, such as Tera Chat on a Mac. The big 2026 change: since 15 January, Meta only allows general-purpose AI chatbots like ChatGPT on WhatsApp’s business platform where it’s legally required to, which as of October 2026 means the EEA, Brazil and Türkiye.
This guide covers what Meta offers, what that chatbot rule does and doesn’t mean for you, what WhatsApp’s own terms say about automation, and how to get replies that sound like you. Everything was checked against Meta’s and the vendors’ own pages on 20 October 2026.
What AI does WhatsApp have built in?
Meta AI is built into WhatsApp (WhatsApp) and offers three things that matter for replies:
Writing Help: rewrite your draft
Tap the pencil icon while drafting a message, and Writing Help offers versions of your text that are professional, funny, supportive or simply rephrased, or proofreads it. It launched on 27 August 2025 “in English in select countries” (TechCrunch).
What it isn’t: a reply writer that knows how you text. It rewrites what you’ve already typed into preset tones; Meta doesn’t describe it as learning your style or reading the conversation to suggest a reply.
Message summaries: catch up
When unread messages pile up, Meta says Meta AI “can help quickly summarize them so you can jump right back into the conversation.” Useful for a busy group; it doesn’t write your reply.
Meta AI as a chat partner
You can chat with Meta AI directly, or mention @Meta AI in a group to ask it something. Like any chatbot, it only sees what you send it.
Availability: Meta’s own page says “Features may not be available to all users.” If you don’t see the pencil icon or summaries, your country, language or app version may not have them yet. Our guide to WhatsApp message summaries and Writing Help goes into who has what.
Privacy: Meta says Private Processing “enables Meta AI to process your messages without Meta or WhatsApp being able to read them,” and that your personal messages and calls stay end-to-end encrypted. If you’d rather not have Meta AI in your chats at all, see how far you can turn off Meta AI in WhatsApp and Instagram.
What changed in 2026: the rule on AI chatbots
Meta’s terms for the WhatsApp Business Platform now restrict “AI Providers”, such as makers of large language models and general-purpose AI assistants: when AI is the main thing they offer, they are “strictly prohibited from accessing or using the WhatsApp Business Platform”, except in certain countries (Meta terms, updated 23 September 2026). Meta’s developer documentation says the change took effect on 15 January 2026, and that AI providers may offer general-purpose assistants only where Meta is legally required to allow them (Meta):
| Where AI chatbots are allowed on WhatsApp’s business platform | Since |
|---|---|
| Italy | 16 February 2026 |
| The rest of the European Economic Area (EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) | 11 March 2026 |
| Brazil | 11 March 2026 |
| Türkiye | 15 October 2026 |
Is ChatGPT still on WhatsApp?
Only in the European Economic Area, as of October 2026. On 21 October 2025, OpenAI said that because of a policy and terms change from WhatsApp, ChatGPT would no longer be available there after 15 January 2026 (OpenAI). Its release notes for 13 July 2026 then announced that ChatGPT was back on WhatsApp in the EEA (OpenAI release notes). Brazil and Türkiye are on Meta’s list too, but OpenAI’s pages mention only the EEA.
Where it works, OpenAI’s help center says you message the verified 1-800-CHATGPT contact (+1-800-242-8478) without needing a ChatGPT account, that availability depends on the country code of your WhatsApp number and may roll out gradually, and that usage limits apply (OpenAI). So if the contact isn’t answering you, check where your number is registered before assuming an outage. Outside the EEA, use the ChatGPT app or chatgpt.com instead.
What this means for you
- It never could reply to your friends. An AI contact on WhatsApp is someone you chat with. It sees only what you send it, not your other chats.
- Pasting a chat into an AI app isn’t affected. The rule governs AI companies running chatbots on WhatsApp’s business platform, not what you do in the ChatGPT or Claude app.
- Businesses can still use AI for their own customers. Meta’s terms let a business hire an AI provider as its solution provider, and Meta offers its own AI agent for business chats (more below).
What do WhatsApp’s own terms say about automation?
WhatsApp’s Terms of Service list “bulk messaging, auto-messaging, auto-dialing” among the communications you may not send, and bar accessing or using the service “through automated or other means” that WhatsApp hasn’t authorized (WhatsApp Terms). WhatsApp doesn’t offer an official way for other apps to read personal chats, so any app that does, Tera Chat included, is unofficial.
In practice:
- Riskiest: a bot that sends replies from your personal account on its own, which is what a ban on auto-messaging is most likely to catch.
- Lower risk: an AI that drafts and you send yourself, the way you’d send any message.
- Your call: unofficial apps that connect to your account. Weigh the trade-offs in our guide to whether all-in-one messaging apps are safe.

How to get WhatsApp replies that sound like you
Generic AI replies sound generic because the AI has never seen how you write. Fix that with three ingredients:
- Style samples. Give the AI three to five messages you’ve actually sent to this person or someone similar.
- The thread. Paste the last few messages, not just the latest one.
- The relationship. Say who they are (“my sister”, “a client”) and how you usually talk to them.
Example, made up for this guide. In a family group, your aunt writes: “Are you coming for Diwali this year? We need numbers by Friday.” A tone rewrite gives you “Hi Aunty, thank you for asking. I would love to come and will confirm by Friday.” With your own samples, the AI drafts “hi aunty, yes coming, 2 of us. will confirm train times by thurs”, which is closer to how you’d write in that group. You add the detail only you know and send it.

Doing it without copying and pasting
On a Mac, Tera Chat pairs with WhatsApp the way WhatsApp Web does: in Settings → Messaging → WhatsApp → Pair device, then scan the QR code from WhatsApp on your phone (Settings → Linked Devices → Link a Device). Your WhatsApp chats sync into one inbox alongside iMessage, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder. Tera Chat learns your texting style and drafts replies in the thread you’re reading, with a different tone for each tag of contacts, and it can summarize a long group chat on demand. You edit the draft and send it; sending to WhatsApp from Tera Chat is text only.
AI costs nothing extra with your ChatGPT account (through OpenAI’s Codex). With a Claude or Grok API key you pay that provider for what you use, or AI Plus has it built in at $9.99 a month (cancel anytime). Nothing sends on its own: Autopilot, which can reply for you, stays off until you turn it on. Tera Chat is Mac-only and needs Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later.
If you run a business on WhatsApp
This guide is about personal chats. The WhatsApp Business app has its own reply tools: greeting messages for new customers, away messages outside your hours, quick replies for answers you send often, and Meta’s Business Agent, an AI agent that “answers questions, captures leads” in the chat (WhatsApp Business). Use those for customer service rather than a personal-account tool. For a simple away message on a personal phone, see how to auto-reply to texts and WhatsApp.
Privacy: who sees your WhatsApp messages when AI helps?
WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted between you and the other person. The moment an AI helps, someone else processes the text:
- Meta AI: through Private Processing, which Meta says it can’t read.
- ChatGPT, Claude and other chatbots: whatever you paste goes to that company under its policy.
- A third-party app: check where it stores your chats and which AI it sends them to. Tera Chat keeps your inbox on your Mac and sends the conversations its AI works on to the provider you chose.
The other people in the chat didn’t choose your AI tool, which is a good reason to use the least access that solves your problem. Our checklist covers whether it’s safe to let AI read your messages, and our explainer on AI that replies to texts in your style compares every approach.
What to do next
Try Writing Help first if you have it; it’s free and private. If you want replies that sound like you rather than like a tone preset, give an AI your own messages as samples, and keep sending as the step you do yourself. If WhatsApp is one of several apps you reply in every day, an inbox that drafts in your style across all of them will save the most time.
Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp have an AI reply feature?
WhatsApp has Writing Help, which rewrites a message you've drafted in a professional, funny or supportive tone or proofreads it, plus Meta AI message summaries. It launched in English in select countries in 2025, and Meta says features may not be available to all users.
Can I still use ChatGPT on WhatsApp?
OpenAI ended ChatGPT on WhatsApp after 15 January 2026, citing WhatsApp's policy change, and its help center says the service is available again in the European Economic Area. Either way, it's a contact you chat with: it can't read or reply to your other WhatsApp chats.
Is it against WhatsApp's rules to use AI for replies?
Writing a reply with an AI's help and sending it yourself isn't something WhatsApp's terms address. Its terms do bar auto-messaging and unauthorized automated access, so bots that send from your personal account are risky.
Can Meta read my messages when I use Meta AI?
Meta says Private Processing lets Meta AI work on your messages without Meta or WhatsApp being able to read them. Your personal messages remain end-to-end encrypted otherwise.
What's the best AI for WhatsApp replies on a Mac?
For occasional help, paste the chat into ChatGPT or Claude with a few of your own texts. To draft WhatsApp replies in your style without copying and pasting, Tera Chat reads your WhatsApp chats on your Mac and drafts replies you edit and send.
