AI for your messages

Can Claude reply to your WhatsApp or Instagram messages? (October 2026)

Can Claude reply to WhatsApp messages? Not on its own: it can't read your chats. The routes that work in October 2026, from pasting a chat to a Mac inbox app.

The short answer

  • As of 20 October 2026, Claude can't read or reply to your WhatsApp or Instagram chats on its own: Anthropic offers no integration that connects Claude to those accounts.
  • Claude's iPhone and Android apps can draft a message and open WhatsApp with it filled in, but Anthropic says Claude does not read existing messages, and you send it yourself.
  • For a reply that uses the real conversation, paste the chat into Claude with a few of your own messages as style samples, or use an app that connects your accounts and calls Claude for you.
  • On a Mac, Tera Chat can use your own Claude API key to draft WhatsApp, iMessage and Telegram replies in your style; Instagram drafts need ChatGPT through Codex or a Tera Chat AI plan, which runs on Claude.
  • A Claude Pro subscription doesn't include API access; Claude Max and Team plans include monthly API credits.

No, not on its own. As of 20 October 2026, Anthropic offers no feature that connects Claude to your WhatsApp or Instagram account to read your chats and reply. Claude’s iPhone and Android apps can draft a message and open WhatsApp with it filled in, but Anthropic says Claude “does not read existing messages”, and you send it yourself (Anthropic). To get Claude-written replies based on the actual conversation, you either paste the chat into Claude, or use an app that connects your accounts and calls Claude for you.

Below are five routes, what each one sees and costs, and the one we’d avoid.

The routes that work, compared

Route Reads the conversation? WhatsApp Instagram Who sends Cost
Paste the chat into Claude Only what you paste Yes Yes You (copy and paste) Free plan or any paid plan
Claude’s phone app hand-off No Yes, opens WhatsApp with the draft Not named by Anthropic You, in WhatsApp All Claude plans
Claude in Chrome on WhatsApp Web The page it’s looking at In principle, in Chrome In principle, in Chrome Claude can type and click Paid plans
An inbox app with your Claude API key (Tera Chat, Mac) Yes, the thread you’re reading Yes Needs ChatGPT via Codex or a Tera Chat AI plan You Free app; you pay Anthropic per use
A Tera Chat AI plan (runs on Claude) Yes Yes Yes You From $9.99 a month

1. Paste the conversation into Claude

The simplest route works on any plan. Copy the last few messages, add three to five messages you’ve sent recently so Claude can copy your style, and ask for a reply.

Example prompt, made up for this guide:

Here are three texts I sent recently, so you can match my style: “omg yes. 7 works”, “running 10 min late sorry”, “no idea tbh, will ask”. My friend Dani just wrote on WhatsApp: “did you still want to come to the market sunday or are you dead lol”. Write two short replies in my style: one yes, one no. Lowercase, no exclamation marks, under 15 words each.

Claude might suggest: “not dead, sunday works. 10ish?” You’d tweak it (“not dead yet, sunday works, 10ish?”) and send it in WhatsApp.

Trade-offs: it’s manual, and you’re sending the other person’s messages to Anthropic. Fine for a tricky reply; tedious for twenty.

2. Claude’s phone app hands a draft to WhatsApp

On iPhone and Android, Claude can “draft and send messages through” WhatsApp and other messaging apps. It prepares the text and shows a preview; you tap the card, WhatsApp opens with the message filled in, and you review it and send it as normal. Anthropic says Claude “does not read existing messages or emails, only creates new content”, and the feature is on all Claude plans (iPhone, Android).

Good for: writing a new message on the go. Not for: replying to something, because Claude can’t see what the other person said unless you tell it.

3. Claude in Chrome on WhatsApp Web (we’d avoid this)

Claude in Chrome is a browser extension for paid plans (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise) that can read pages, click, type and fill in forms, in Google Chrome only (Anthropic). In principle, that means it could read a WhatsApp Web or Instagram tab and type a reply.

We don’t recommend it for personal chats. Anthropic’s own safety guide advises “don’t use Claude in Chrome on sensitive sites”, warns that hidden instructions in web content could trick Claude (“the risk is not zero”), and notes that Claude takes screenshots of visible tabs (Anthropic). A friend’s message is exactly the kind of content you don’t want an agent acting on unsupervised.

4. An inbox app that uses your Claude API key

Some apps connect to your messaging accounts and call an AI model for you. Tera Chat, a free Mac app, puts iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder in one inbox and drafts replies that match how you text: your slang, emoji and message length, with a different tone for each tag of contacts (family, colleague, crush and so on). You add your own Claude (Anthropic) API key in Settings → API Keys, then pick a draft, edit it and send it yourself.

What works with your own Claude key:

  • WhatsApp, iMessage and Telegram: reply drafts (from the draft button in the composer), summaries and questions about a chat.
  • Instagram and Tinder: reply drafts in these two apps need your ChatGPT account through OpenAI’s Codex or a Tera Chat AI plan; Claude API keys aren’t used for them.

You pay Anthropic for what you use, and a daily spend cap (default $5) keeps it in check. The conversations the AI works on go to Anthropic; your inbox stays on your Mac. Tera Chat is Mac-only (Apple silicon, macOS 15 or later), and iMessage needs Full Disk Access (what that means). For what Claude’s own apps can do with iMessage, see Claude and iMessage: what’s official and what’s not. Setup is in our guide to using your ChatGPT account (through Codex) or a Claude or Grok API key with Tera Chat.

5. A Tera Chat AI plan, which runs on Claude

If you’d rather not manage an API key, Tera Chat’s AI plans have AI built in and run on Anthropic’s Claude. The text goes to Claude through Tera Chat’s server, which passes it on and doesn’t keep it. Every plan covers replies in your style, summaries and chat questions, including Instagram, plus dating openers and date planning. AI Plus is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year; AI Pro ($19.99 a month) has twice its monthly AI. You can cancel anytime. Prices as of 20 October 2026, in US dollars plus tax where applicable.

If you use it with Tinder, know that Tinder’s terms ban third-party apps that interact with the service, AI included, and Tera Chat connects to your account, so it is the kind of tool those terms cover (what Tinder’s rules say about AI).

Claude subscription vs Claude API key: which do you need?

They’re different products. Anthropic says its paid plans and the Claude Console (where API keys live) are “separate products”, and API use is billed separately; Pro doesn’t include API access (Anthropic).

The exception: Max and Team plans include monthly API credits, for example $100 a month on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x, claimed by linking a Console organization in your billing settings. Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle (Anthropic). If you already pay for Max, those are API credits, so they can pay for a key you create in that Console organization and use in an app like Tera Chat.

What about a Claude contact on WhatsApp?

Don’t expect one. Since 15 January 2026, Meta only lets “general-purpose AI assistants” use the WhatsApp Business Platform where it’s legally required to: as of 20 October 2026 that’s Italy and the rest of the European Economic Area, Brazil, and Türkiye (Meta). We found no official Claude contact on WhatsApp. Bots that call themselves “Claude on WhatsApp” aren’t from Anthropic, so think twice before sending them your messages. And even an official AI contact would only see what you send it, not your other chats. More on Meta’s rules in AI for WhatsApp replies.

Before you hand your chats to any AI

Whichever route you pick, the AI provider sees the conversation it works on, including messages from people who never chose to share them with an AI. Use the smallest route that solves your problem, keep sending as your job, and read our checklist on whether it’s safe to let AI read your messages. Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Claude WhatsApp number?

We found none from Anthropic as of 20 October 2026. Since 15 January 2026 Meta has allowed general-purpose AI assistants on WhatsApp's business platform only where the law requires it, which as of October 2026 means the EEA, Brazil and Türkiye, so be wary of unofficial 'Claude on WhatsApp' bots.

Can Claude read my WhatsApp messages?

Not through any Anthropic feature. Claude only sees what you paste or share with it, or what a third-party app you've connected sends to it.

Can I use my Claude Pro subscription in other apps?

Not as an API key. Anthropic bills Claude plans and API use separately, and Pro doesn't include API access. Max and Team plans come with monthly API credits you can claim in the Claude Console.

Can Claude reply to Instagram DMs?

Not directly. You can paste a DM into Claude for a draft, or use an inbox app. In Tera Chat, Instagram drafts work with a Tera Chat AI plan (which runs on Claude) or ChatGPT through Codex, not with your own Claude API key.

Is Claude in Chrome a good way to answer WhatsApp Web?

It can read and type in web pages, but Anthropic's own safety guide recommends not using it on sensitive sites, and private chats are about as sensitive as it gets. A tool that drafts for you to review is a safer route.
