AI for your messages

How to reply by voice on a Mac: dictation for iMessage, WhatsApp and Telegram

How to dictate text messages on a Mac in Messages, WhatsApp and Telegram: turn on Dictation, the shortcuts and voice commands, privacy settings and voice drafts.

The short answer

  • Turn on Dictation in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation, click in any message field, press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut (or choose Edit > Start Dictation), speak, then press Escape to stop.
  • Dictation works anywhere you can type on a Mac, so the same steps work in Messages, WhatsApp and Telegram.
  • In supported languages, Dictation adds commas, periods and question marks for you; say an emoji's name, such as 'heart emoji', to insert it.
  • The text under the Dictation setting tells you whether your voice is processed on your Mac; turn off Improve Siri & Dictation if you don't want to share audio with Apple.
  • Dictation types your words as you say them. To talk through a rambling thought and get a clean reply instead, you need an AI step, such as dictating into a chatbot and asking it to tidy the text.

To dictate a text message on a Mac, turn on Dictation in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation, click in the message field in Messages, WhatsApp or Telegram, press the Microphone key (or your Dictation shortcut, or choose Edit > Start Dictation), speak, and press Escape to stop. Dictation works in any app where you can type, adds commas, periods and question marks for you in supported languages, and System Settings tells you whether your voice is processed on the Mac.

This guide covers the exact steps on macOS 27, the voice commands that make a dictated text look typed, when to send a voice message instead, where your voice goes with each option, and how to turn a spoken ramble into a clean reply.

How to dictate a message on your Mac, step by step

These steps follow Apple’s macOS 27 guide (Apple Support).

  1. Turn Dictation on. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Keyboard in the sidebar, go to Dictation and turn it on. If asked, click Enable.
  2. Decide about audio sharing. macOS asks whether to share audio recordings to improve Siri and Dictation. Click Not Now if you’d rather not.
  3. Pick a shortcut. If your keyboard has a Microphone key, that already works. Otherwise open the Shortcut pop-up menu under Dictation and choose one, or choose Customize and press the keys you want.
  4. Click in the message field of Messages, WhatsApp or Telegram.
  5. Start dictating: press the Microphone key or your shortcut, or choose Edit > Start Dictation. Speak when the cursor is highlighted and pulsing or you hear the tone. On Apple silicon Macs you can keep typing while you talk.
  6. Stop: press Escape, the Microphone key or your shortcut. Dictation also stops by itself after 30 seconds without speech.
  7. Fix and send. Words Dictation wasn’t sure about are underlined in blue; click one to pick an alternative. Then press Return to send.

The same steps work in every messaging app because Apple says you can dictate text anywhere you can type it. If you switch between Messages, WhatsApp and Telegram all day, our keyboard shortcuts cheat sheet for Mac messaging covers the rest of the keyboard. If texting from your Mac isn’t set up yet, start with how to text from a Mac.

Voice commands that make a dictated text look typed

Spoken texts often come out stiffer than typed ones. These commands help (Apple’s dictation commands):

Say You get
“heart emoji” (or any emoji’s name) The emoji
“exclamation mark”, “question mark”, “comma” That punctuation mark
“new line” A new line
“new paragraph” A new paragraph

Automatic punctuation. In supported languages, Dictation inserts commas, periods and question marks on its own. If you text without full stops and don’t want them, turn off Auto-punctuation in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation.

Test line breaks first. In most chat apps the Return key sends the message, so try “new line” in a chat with yourself before using it mid-message.

Switching languages. Add languages with Edit next to Languages in the Dictation settings. While dictating, click the language indicator next to the cursor, or press the Globe key if your keyboard has one.

Dictation or a voice message?

Dictation turns your voice into text. A voice message sends the recording itself. Choose by what the other person needs:

Dictated text Voice message
Best for Quick replies, logistics, anything they’ll want to search later Tone, stories, anything easily misread in text
They can read it in a meeting Yes No, unless their app transcribes it
Risk Misheard words if you don’t check Long rambles nobody wants to play
How on a Mac Any message field Messages: click the Record Audio button, then Stop. WhatsApp and Telegram: the microphone button in the message bar

Two things to know about voice messages on a Mac. In Messages, an audio message disappears from the conversation two minutes after you send it unless you click Keep, although the recipient can still play it (Apple Support). And transcripts on the other end aren’t guaranteed: WhatsApp’s voice message transcripts only appear if the recipient has turned them on, and the supported languages depend on their phone’s system (WhatsApp Help Center), while Telegram lists voice-to-text as a Telegram Premium feature (Telegram Premium FAQ). Our guide to turning voice messages into text covers each app’s built-in option.

Where your voice goes

Every dictation tool hears what you say, so it’s worth knowing where the audio and text end up. As of 20 October 2026:

Tool Where speech is turned into text Cost Notes
Apple Dictation On your Mac when the Dictation setting says so; otherwise Apple’s servers Free Audio recordings are shared with Apple only if Improve Siri & Dictation is on
Wispr Flow Always in the cloud (Wispr) Free for 2,000 words a week on desktop; Pro $15/month, or $12/month billed yearly (pricing) You can opt out of model training
superwhisper Offline with local models on Apple silicon, or cloud models if you choose them (superwhisper) Free tier with local Whisper models; check its site for Pro pricing The Pro plan can use your own AI API keys
Tera Chat voice drafts On your Mac Needs AI set up: your ChatGPT account (through Codex), a Claude or Grok API key, or a Tera Chat AI plan Works from an audio file; the transcript goes to the AI you chose to write the reply

To check Apple Dictation on your Mac: open System Settings > Keyboard and read the text below Dictation. Apple says it states whether voice input and transcripts are “processed on your device and not sent to Siri servers.” To stop sharing audio samples, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements and turn off Improve Siri & Dictation.

From a spoken ramble to a clean reply

Dictation types what you say, word for word. That’s perfect for “running 10 minutes late”, less so for a reply you’re still working out (“so, um, I do want to come, but Saturday’s tricky, maybe Sunday, unless…”). For those, add an AI step that turns your thinking-out-loud into a short message.

With any chatbot. Click in ChatGPT’s or Claude’s message box, dictate your rough thoughts with Apple Dictation, and ask: “Turn this into a two-line text to my friend Sam. Keep it casual and lowercase, and say I’d prefer Sunday.” Then paste the result into your messaging app and edit it. To make the output sound like you rather than like a chatbot, use the style card in our guide to making AI replies sound like you. Remember that whatever you dictate there goes to that AI company.

When you’re answering a voice message: Tera Chat’s voice drafts. Tera Chat is our app, so weigh this accordingly. It’s a free Mac app that brings iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram chats into one inbox. Its Voice draft doesn’t listen to you live; it’s built to answer a voice message from an audio file:

  1. In the conversation, press ⌥⌘V for Voice draft and click Pick audio file. It takes common audio formats such as M4A, MP3, WAV and AIFF.
  2. Tera Chat transcribes the recording on your Mac and shows the transcript, which you can correct.
  3. Click Draft reply. The AI drafts a reply to what the recording says, in your texting style.
  4. Click Copy draft, paste it into the chat, edit it and send it yourself.

For turning your own words into text as you speak, Apple Dictation is still the tool, and it works inside Tera Chat’s message field too. The transcription stays on your Mac; the transcript then goes to the AI you’ve set up to write the reply, which can be your ChatGPT account (through Codex) or a Claude or Grok API key, at no cost from Tera Chat. Voice drafts need AI set up, and Tera Chat needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later. AI that replies to texts in your style compares this with other ways of getting AI drafts, and is it safe to let AI read your messages? covers the privacy side.

Dictation not working on your Mac? Check these

  • It’s off, or the shortcut clashes with another app. Check System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation and try a different Shortcut.
  • It’s using the wrong microphone. Choose one from the Microphone source menu in the same settings, or pick Automatic.
  • It’s typing in the wrong language. Click Edit next to Languages and add or remove languages.
  • Voice Control is on. Apple says standard Dictation isn’t available while Voice Control is turned on.
  • It keeps stopping. It stops after 30 seconds without speech; start it again when you’re ready.

The short version

For most replies, Apple Dictation is free, built in and works in every messaging app on your Mac: turn it on once, learn your shortcut, and check the blue-underlined words before you send. Send a voice message when tone matters more than speed. And when you’d rather talk a reply through than dictate it word for word, add an AI step, keeping in mind where your words go.
