Are Instagram DMs encrypted? Which chats are end-to-end encrypted in 2026

Are Instagram DMs encrypted? Not since 8 May 2026. See which chats on iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram are end-to-end encrypted, in one dated table.

The short answer

  • Instagram DMs are no longer end-to-end encrypted: Instagram's help center says end-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram is no longer supported as of 8 May 2026.
  • iMessage (blue bubbles) and WhatsApp personal chats are end-to-end encrypted by default. Green-bubble SMS and MMS are not; RCS is encrypted only from iOS 26.5, in beta, when both people's carriers support it.
  • Telegram's normal chats and all its groups are not end-to-end encrypted. Only optional one-to-one secret chats are, and on a Mac only the native Telegram for macOS app can start them.
  • Encryption protects messages on the way, not the devices at each end, your backups, or any app or AI you let read your chats.

No, Instagram DMs are not end-to-end encrypted any more: Instagram’s help center says end-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram “is no longer supported as of 8 May 2026”. Of the four big chat apps people use on a Mac, iMessage and WhatsApp encrypt personal chats end-to-end by default, Telegram only in optional one-to-one secret chats, and Instagram not at all.

Below is one dated table for all four, then the details that trip people up: green bubbles, iCloud backups, WhatsApp chats with businesses, which Telegram app on a Mac can start a secret chat, and what encryption doesn’t protect. We checked each company’s own help pages (and, for Telegram’s Mac apps, their published source code) on 20 October 2026.

End-to-end encryption by app (checked 20 October 2026)

Chat End-to-end encrypted? What to know
iMessage (blue bubbles) Yes, by default Encrypted iMessage chats show a lock at the top (Apple)
SMS and MMS (green bubbles) No Apple says they “aren’t end-to-end encrypted” (Apple)
RCS (green bubbles) Only in beta, from iOS 26.5 Both people’s carriers must support it; shows “Encrypted” with a lock
Messages in iCloud Depends on settings Yes when iCloud Backup is off, or always with Advanced Data Protection (Apple)
WhatsApp personal chats and calls Yes, by default Covers messages, photos, videos, voice messages, documents, status and calls (WhatsApp)
WhatsApp chats with some businesses No, and labelled When a business uses Meta’s optional services or a third-party agent
WhatsApp chat backups Optional Turn it on yourself; WhatsApp’s new cloud storage is always encrypted (WhatsApp)
Telegram cloud chats (the default, and every group) No Server-client encryption, stored encrypted in Telegram’s cloud (Telegram FAQ)
Telegram secret chats Yes, when you start one One-to-one only, and they stay on the device that started them
Instagram DMs No, since 8 May 2026 Including group chats (Instagram)

Are Instagram DMs encrypted?

No. Instagram used to offer end-to-end encrypted chats, and that’s over. Instagram’s help page now says only this:

  • End-to-end encrypted messaging is no longer supported as of 8 May 2026.
  • If you have affected chats, Instagram shows you instructions to download any media or messages you want to keep, and you may need to update the app first.
  • “For Meta’s other end-to-end encrypted chat options, take a look at WhatsApp.”

Without end-to-end encryption, the keys aren’t only on your devices, so Instagram can technically access what’s in your DMs. If you’re reading Instagram on a Mac, our guide to Instagram DMs on Mac covers the browser and app options. If a conversation needs end-to-end encryption, move it to WhatsApp, iMessage or Signal.

Is iMessage end-to-end encrypted?

Yes, blue-bubble iMessages are encrypted end to end, and Apple’s security guide says it can’t decrypt them. The catches are green bubbles and backups.

Green bubbles. Messages can send three kinds of message, and Apple’s own page (May 2026) is clear about each:

  • iMessage: “your conversations are encrypted end-to-end”.
  • SMS and MMS: “aren’t end-to-end encrypted”.
  • RCS: starting with iOS 26.5, end-to-end encrypted RCS is available in beta and “will roll out over time”. It needs a carrier that supports it on both sides. Encrypted RCS chats show “Encrypted” with a lock at the top; if you don’t see that, Apple says the chat isn’t protected.

On a Mac, green-bubble texts go through your iPhone, so the same rules apply (our guide to texting from a Mac explains Text Message Forwarding).

Backups. With Apple’s standard settings, Messages in iCloud is end-to-end encrypted only when iCloud Backup is off, because the backup “includes a copy of the Messages in iCloud encryption key”. Turn on Advanced Data Protection and Messages in iCloud is always end-to-end encrypted, backup included. Apple adds that some metadata, such as whether a message was an iMessage or SMS, stays under standard protection either way.

Is WhatsApp end-to-end encrypted?

Yes. WhatsApp encrypts personal chats and calls end to end automatically, with “no need to turn on any special settings”. That holds on the Mac too: WhatsApp says each linked device, including the Mac app and WhatsApp Web, keeps “the same expected level of privacy and security through end-to-end encryption”.

Three exceptions are worth knowing, all from WhatsApp’s own encryption page:

  • Some business chats. Chats with businesses using the WhatsApp Business app count as encrypted. When a business uses optional services from Meta (for example Meta storing and answering its messages), WhatsApp doesn’t consider those chats end-to-end encrypted and shows this in the chat.
  • Third-party agents. Conversations with them run through a Meta service and aren’t considered end-to-end encrypted.
  • Payments, where available, aren’t end-to-end encrypted, because banks have to process them.

To check a one-to-one chat, tap Encryption in the contact’s info and compare the QR code or 60-digit security code with the other person.

Backups are the gap. Your chat backup to iCloud or Google is end-to-end encrypted only if you turn it on. In WhatsApp, go to Settings → Chats → Chat Backup and tap End-to-end encryption on iPhone (End-to-end encrypted backup on Android), then choose a passkey, a password or a 64-digit key (WhatsApp). WhatsApp warns it can’t reset the password or restore the backup for you if you lose it. WhatsApp is also testing its own cloud storage for backups, which it says is always end-to-end encrypted. And WhatsApp notes that an iPhone’s own iCloud device backup can contain WhatsApp chats that “aren’t protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption”.

Is Telegram end-to-end encrypted?

Not by default. Telegram’s FAQ says “server-client encryption is used in Cloud Chats (private and group chats)”, which are stored encrypted in the Telegram cloud. That’s why Telegram syncs your whole history to every device, and also why Telegram’s servers hold your messages.

Secret chats are the exception: “All messages in secret chats use end-to-end encryption.” They come with limits:

  • One-to-one only. Telegram’s developer documentation defines secret chats as “one-on-one chats”, so groups and channels are always cloud chats.
  • One device. Secret chats “are not part of the Telegram cloud and can only be accessed on their devices of origin.” A secret chat started on your phone never appears on your Mac.
  • Only some apps can start them. On a Mac, Telegram’s FAQ says the native Telegram for macOS app has “every feature from the iOS version of the app including Secret Chats”. Telegram Desktop (and Telegram Lite, the Mac App Store edition built from it) has no secret chats: its interface text contains no secret-chat option at all (Telegram Desktop source, checked 20 October 2026), while Telegram for macOS has New Secret Chat (source).

So if you use Telegram on a Mac and want end-to-end encryption, install Telegram for macOS and start the secret chat from the Mac itself. Our Telegram on Mac guide explains the two apps.

What end-to-end encryption doesn’t protect

End-to-end encryption protects a message between devices. It does nothing once the message is on a screen. In practice:

  • The devices at each end. Anyone using your Mac while you’re signed in can read your chats. A login password and FileVault protect the Mac; encryption doesn’t.
  • Linked devices. Every Mac, browser or tablet linked to your account gets the decrypted messages. Check the list in WhatsApp’s Linked devices and Telegram’s active sessions now and then.
  • Backups. As above: iCloud with standard settings, WhatsApp backups you haven’t encrypted, and device backups.
  • The other person. They can screenshot, forward or export the chat.
  • AI features and connected apps. Paste a chat into a chatbot, or let an app read your chats, and that service sees the text. Our privacy checklist for AI that reads your messages compares the options, and are all-in-one messaging apps safe? covers unified inboxes.

Where Tera Chat fits

Tera Chat is our app, so here’s exactly what it does. Tera Chat for Mac is a free app that brings iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder into one inbox. It isn’t a messaging network, so it doesn’t change how any chat above is encrypted on the way: Instagram DMs are still not encrypted end to end, and Telegram secret chats stay on the device that started them, so they don’t appear in it.

What’s true about where your messages go:

  • Your inbox lives on your Mac. Messages, contacts and relationship stats are stored locally and never uploaded to a Tera Chat server.
  • Your AI keys and Tera Chat account are stored in the macOS Keychain.
  • iMessage history is read on your Mac with Full Disk Access, which you can skip or revoke (what Full Disk Access allows).
  • If you set up AI features, the text of the chats they work on goes to the AI provider you picked, or, with a Tera Chat AI plan, to Anthropic’s Claude through Tera Chat’s server, which passes it on and doesn’t keep it.

Which is the most private messaging app?

Of these four, iMessage and WhatsApp are the most private by default, Telegram only when you use secret chats, and Instagram is the least. Beyond these four, privacy guides usually point to Signal, which says “Privacy isn’t an optional mode” and encrypts every message and call end to end. Tera Chat doesn’t support Signal. Quick checklist

  1. Move anything sensitive off Instagram DMs.
  2. In Messages, look for blue bubbles, or “Encrypted” with a lock on RCS; treat other green bubbles as readable.
  3. Turn on Advanced Data Protection, or keep iCloud Backup off, if you want Messages in iCloud encrypted end to end.
  4. Turn on WhatsApp’s End-to-end encrypted backup, and store the password or key somewhere safe.
  5. On Telegram, use a secret chat for sensitive one-to-one conversations, started on the device you’ll use.
  6. Review linked devices and active sessions, and lock your Mac when you step away.

Frequently asked questions

Are Instagram messages still encrypted?

No. Instagram's help center says end-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram is no longer supported as of 8 May 2026, and it points people who want encrypted chats to WhatsApp.

Is Telegram safer than WhatsApp?

Not by default. WhatsApp encrypts personal chats end-to-end automatically; Telegram stores normal chats in its cloud with server-client encryption and encrypts end-to-end only in secret chats you start yourself, one person at a time.

Are iMessages encrypted when they're backed up to iCloud?

It depends on your settings. Apple says Messages in iCloud is end-to-end encrypted when iCloud Backup is off, or always with Advanced Data Protection; with standard settings and iCloud Backup on, the backup holds a copy of the key.

How do I know if a WhatsApp chat is end-to-end encrypted?

Personal chats are, automatically. WhatsApp marks chats with businesses that use Meta's optional services as not end-to-end encrypted. To verify a one-to-one chat, tap Encryption in the contact's info to compare the 60-digit security code.

Are group chats end-to-end encrypted?

On iMessage and WhatsApp, yes. On Telegram, no: secret chats are one-to-one only, so every Telegram group is a cloud chat. Instagram groups aren't, like the rest of Instagram's DMs.
