What happened to Texts.com? (And where Texts users went)

What happened to Texts.com: Automattic bought it in 2023 and turned it into Beeper. The full timeline, what happened to subscriptions, and the alternatives.

The short answer

  • Texts.com became Beeper: Automattic bought Texts in October 2023, bought Beeper in April 2024, and built Beeper's new desktop app on Texts' foundation in February 2025.
  • As of October 2026, Texts.com no longer accepts new registrations; existing users can still log in to see their account and past invoices.
  • Texts subscriptions moved to Beeper: Texts Personal ($15 a month) became Beeper Plus at $9.99, and Texts for Work ($49.99) became Beeper Plus Plus at a discounted $30.
  • Beeper is the direct successor; Mac users who want dating apps or AI drafts can look at Tera Chat, and work-focused users at RPLY or tab apps like Franz.

Texts.com became Beeper. Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, bought Texts in October 2023, bought Beeper in April 2024, rebuilt Beeper’s desktop app on Texts’ foundation in February 2025, and moved Texts subscribers onto Beeper’s plans after Beeper’s July 2025 relaunch. As of October 2026, Texts.com no longer accepts new registrations, and its website now points visitors to Beeper.

Below is the full timeline with sources, what happened to each Texts plan, whether you can still use Texts, and where former Texts users can go if Beeper isn’t the right fit. We checked every source on 20 October 2026.

The Texts.com timeline

Texts went from an independent paid app to part of Beeper in under two years. Here are the dated steps.

Date What happened Source
2020 Kishan Bagaria creates Texts, a desktop app that puts your chats in one inbox Wikipedia
24 Oct 2023 Automattic acquires Texts, reportedly for $50 million. Texts then covered iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Messenger, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Slack and Discord Matt Mullenweg’s announcement; price per Wikipedia
Apr 2024 Automattic acquires Beeper, reportedly for $125 million, and says it will merge it with Texts TechCrunch
24 Feb 2025 Beeper releases redesigned desktop and iPhone apps in beta. The desktop app is built “using Texts.com app’s foundation”; the old Texts app keeps working for now, with a migration promised TechCrunch
16 Jul 2025 “The New Beeper” launches: connections move onto your own device, and paid plans start at $9.99 a month Beeper blog
After Jul 2025 Texts subscriptions move to Beeper plans Beeper help center
Oct 2026 Texts.com no longer accepts new registrations and its home page reads “Try the next generation of Texts app, now called Beeper”; AlternativeTo lists Texts as discontinued and merged with Beeper Beeper help center, texts.com, AlternativeTo

Beeper’s help center doesn’t give an exact date for when Texts registrations closed.

What happened to Texts subscriptions?

Texts subscribers were moved to Beeper plans, and most ended up paying less. Beeper’s help center lists the conversions:

Texts plan Old price Became New price
Texts Personal $15/month Beeper Plus $9.99/month, next invoice prorated
Texts for Work $49.99/month Beeper Plus Plus Discounted to $30/month
Texts for Students Discounted first year Beeper Plus for the rest of the year Full Beeper Plus price after the student year
Texts free $0 Beeper free with extras 10 accounts (3 on the same network), reminders, scheduled send, custom app icon, incognito mode

Texts’ “Stealth Mode” lives on in Beeper as incognito mode. For comparison, a new Beeper user in October 2026 gets five free accounts, one per network, with Plus at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year.

Can you still use Texts.com?

Only to look things up. Beeper’s help center says Texts.com is “no longer accepting new user registrations,” while existing users “can still log in to access their accounts” and see past invoices in the billing portal. When TechCrunch covered the new apps in February 2025, the old Texts app still worked, but Beeper’s help center doesn’t say how long it will keep working. If you’re still on it, move now rather than when it stops syncing.

Is Beeper the same as Texts?

Beeper is the successor rather than a rename. Its desktop app was built on Texts’ foundation, but it now runs connections on your own device, adds iPhone and Android apps, and supports about 16 networks, including iMessage in the Mac app. If you liked Texts, Beeper is the closest thing to it in 2026, and your Texts subscription already moved there.

Where did Texts users go?

Most went to Beeper, because that was the default path. If Beeper doesn’t suit you, these are the realistic alternatives in October 2026. Tera Chat is our app; we’ve tried to be fair, and we say where others are the better pick.

If you want… Try Watch out for
The same networks Texts had, on every device Beeper Free plan stops at 5 accounts
iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder on a Mac, with AI drafts in your style Tera Chat (free inbox) Mac-only (Apple silicon, macOS 15+); no Signal, Messenger, Slack, Discord or LinkedIn
AI drafts across iMessage, Slack, email and LinkedIn RPLY (or NOX, from the same company) RPLY Pro is $25/month, NOX $50/month billed yearly; no dating apps
Work web apps in tabs Franz, Rambox or Ferdium No iMessage and no merged inbox
Nothing unofficial The official apps One window per network

A few notes on the Mac options. If you used Texts for iMessage on a Mac, Beeper and Tera Chat both still offer that, in different ways. Beeper automates the Messages app, while Tera Chat reads your Messages history on your Mac with Full Disk Access (here’s what that permission allows). Tera Chat also adds Tinder, which Texts didn’t support; Tinder’s terms restrict third-party apps that connect to your account, so read what Tinder’s rules say about AI first. Our Tera Chat vs Beeper comparison and our list of Beeper alternatives go into the detail.

Whichever you choose, these apps are unofficial clients for networks like WhatsApp and Instagram, the same as Texts was. Our guide to whether all-in-one messaging apps are safe explains what that means for your accounts.

What to do if you were a Texts user

  1. Check your billing. Log in at texts.com to see your past invoices, and check your card statement for the Beeper charge that replaced your Texts plan.
  2. Install Beeper and reconnect your networks. Your messages are still in WhatsApp, iMessage and the rest, so nothing is lost by switching apps.
  3. If Beeper isn’t right, list the networks you actually use and pick from the table above.
  4. Stop using the old Texts app once your new inbox is set up, since Beeper hasn’t said how long it will keep working.

Texts didn’t vanish; it became Beeper. For most former Texts users, Beeper is the natural next step, and anyone who wants dating apps or AI drafting on a Mac has other good options.
