How to search all your messages on a Mac at once
How to search messages on a Mac: Messages search and its shortcuts, WhatsApp and Telegram search and their filters, and how to search every chat app in one place.
The short answer
- To search iMessages on a Mac, open Messages and press Command-F (or click the search field at the top of the sidebar); it finds words, names, links, photos and even text inside images.
- Messages only searches Messages. WhatsApp and Telegram each have their own search box on the Mac, and Instagram DMs live in a browser.
- Telegram has the most precise search of the three: you can type a date such as Yesterday, filter by media, links or files, and limit results to one person or chat.
- To search every network at once, you need an app that imports all your chats into one place; Tera Chat does this and also adds your messages to macOS Spotlight.
To search messages on a Mac, open Messages and press ⌘F (or click the search field at the top of the sidebar), then type a word, a phrase or a person’s name; Messages also finds text inside photos and groups results into conversations, links, photos, locations and documents. But Messages only searches Messages. WhatsApp and Telegram have their own search boxes, and Instagram DMs live in a browser, so searching all of them at once takes an app that imports every network into one place.
Below: how search works in each app (checked against the official guides on 20 October 2026), a table of what each one can and can’t find, and the one-search-for-everything option.
How do you search Messages on a Mac?
Messages has one search field that covers every conversation. Here are the steps from Apple’s Messages User Guide:
- Open Messages and click the search field at the top of the sidebar, or press ⌘F (“Search all conversations” in Apple’s shortcut list).
- Either pick one of the Smart Search suggestions that appear (a conversation, photo or location), or type a word or phrase.
- Choose a filter below the search field, or press Return to see all results.
- Add another word or filter to narrow the results.
- Click a result to open the conversation at the matching message. Matching words appear in bold.
What it can find:
- Exact words and phrases, such as “dentist” or “flight number”.
- People, by name.
- Text and objects inside images. Apple’s examples are searching for “car” or “school”, so a search for “receipt” or “menu” can surface a photo someone sent you.
- Links, locations and documents, which appear in their own groups in the results.
What it can’t do: Apple’s guide doesn’t describe a date filter, so if you remember when something was said but not what, you’ll have to search for a likely word and scroll from there. If it’s the very start of a conversation you’re after, see how to see the first message in a chat. If search returns nothing at all, or misses messages you know exist, see iMessage search not working on Mac.
Two related shortcuts help when you’re hunting: ⌃⌘4 shows only conversations with unread messages, and ⌘1 to ⌘9 jump to your pinned conversations.
How do you search WhatsApp messages on a Mac?
WhatsApp’s native Mac app (it needs macOS 12.1 or later, per its App Store listing) has a search field above the chat list. Type a name to find a chat, or a word to find messages containing it. To search a single conversation, open it and use the search option in that chat.
One thing trips people up: your phone holds your main WhatsApp history, and the Mac is a linked device. If an older message doesn’t turn up on your Mac, search for it on your phone. If recent chats are missing from the Mac too, see WhatsApp on Mac not syncing. There’s no date filter in the Mac app’s search box that we could confirm from WhatsApp’s own pages, so search by a word you remember.
How do you search Telegram messages on a Mac?
Telegram’s search has the most precise filters of any of these apps. They were introduced in 2020, and Telegram describes them on its blog (Telegram):
- By type: tabs for Media, Links, Files and more.
- By date: type a day such as “August 14” or “Yesterday”.
- By sender or chat: type the name of a person, group, channel or bot to add it as a filter.
- Combined: for example, messages with a link, from one month, containing one word.
Since January 2025, the Chats tab can also narrow results to private chats, groups or channels (Telegram). Telegram has two official Mac apps (Telegram for macOS and Telegram Desktop), and its blog doesn’t say which apps got each filter, so what you see may differ slightly between them. Our guide to Telegram on Mac explains which app is which.
What about Instagram DMs?
There’s no Instagram app for Mac, so on a computer your DMs are at instagram.com. You can find a conversation by searching for the person’s name. To find a word inside a long conversation, your browser’s Find (⌘F) only covers the messages currently loaded on the page, so for older messages it’s quicker to search in the Instagram app on your phone.
What can each app’s search find?
| App | Where to search | Finds message text? | Filters | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Messages | Field at the top of the sidebar, ⌘F | Yes, plus text inside photos | Result types (conversations, links, photos, locations, documents) | No documented date filter |
| WhatsApp for Mac | Field above the chat list | Yes | None we could confirm | Older history may only be on your phone |
| Telegram | Field above the chat list | Yes | Type, date, sender or chat, chat kind | Filters may look different in Telegram’s two Mac apps |
| Instagram (browser) | Search in the DM inbox | Conversation names; in-chat text only via browser Find | None | No Mac app |
| Tera Chat | Search box above the conversation list, plus Spotlight | Yes, across all connected networks | Filter chips per network | Only searches the networks it supports and has imported |
How do you search every messaging app at once?
To search iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram with one query, you need an app that imports them all into one place.
Tera Chat is a free Mac app that brings iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder into one inbox. It gives you two ways to search:
- The search box in Tera Chat finds conversations and people, and also shows the top matching messages from every connected network.
- Spotlight. Messages Tera Chat imports are added to the macOS Spotlight index, so ⌘Space (Apple) followed by a word can find a WhatsApp message, an iMessage or a Telegram message from any app, and clicking the result opens that conversation in Tera Chat.
If you’ve set up AI in Tera Chat, there’s a third way that often beats keyword search: Ask about this chat. Instead of guessing the exact word someone used, you ask a question, for example:
- “What restaurant did she mention?”
- “Did they ever mention their birthday?”
- “When did he say his flight lands?”
The answer draws on the recent messages and what Tera Chat has learned about the person. AI is optional: it works with your ChatGPT account (through Codex) or a Claude or Grok API key, or a Tera Chat AI plan, and the AI provider sees the conversation it’s answering about.
Before you rely on it, know the limits:
- Tera Chat can only search what it has imported, so each network has to be connected first. Our guide to combining WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram and Instagram in one Mac app walks through connecting each one.
- Reading iMessages needs Full Disk Access, because macOS keeps your Messages history in a protected database on your Mac. You can skip it if you don’t need iMessage, and revoke it in System Settings at any time. Full Disk Access, explained covers what the permission allows.
- It doesn’t support Signal, Messenger, Slack, Discord or email, so those stay in their own apps.
- Your messages stay on your Mac and aren’t uploaded to a Tera Chat server. The flip side of Spotlight indexing is that anyone who uses your Mac user account can find those messages through Spotlight, so keep a separate macOS account if you share the computer. Turning on Lock Tera Chat with Touch ID (in Settings → General) takes Tera Chat’s chats and contacts out of Spotlight while the lock is on; search inside Tera Chat still works once you’ve opened it with Touch ID.
- It needs a Mac with Apple silicon running macOS 15 or later.
Tips for finding a message fast
- Search for the unusual word, not the common one. “Lisbon” finds the trip conversation faster than “trip”.
- Search for what was in the photo. In Messages, “passport” or “parking” can find a photo of a passport page or a parking sign.
- Search links by site name. Typing “youtube” or “airbnb” often surfaces the link someone shared.
- Use Telegram’s date search when you remember when, not what: “Yesterday”, or a date like “March 3”.
- Ask, don’t search, when you remember the meaning but not the words, if your inbox has an ask-a-question feature.

Frequently asked questions
Can you search iMessages by date on a Mac?
Apple's Messages guide doesn't describe a date filter as of October 2026. Search for a word you remember from the conversation, then scroll from the result, or use Telegram, which lets you type a date in its search.
Why can't I find an old WhatsApp message on my Mac?
Your phone holds your main WhatsApp history, and a linked Mac may not show everything from before it was linked. If a message doesn't turn up on your Mac, search for it in WhatsApp on your phone.
Does Spotlight search my messages?
Spotlight searches what apps add to its index on your Mac. Tera Chat adds the messages it imports from iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder, so Command-Space can find them from any app.
Can I search Instagram DMs on a Mac?
There's no Instagram app for Mac, so you use instagram.com, where you can find a conversation by the person's name. A unified inbox that imports Instagram DMs lets you search them alongside your other chats.
