Is there an Instagram app for Mac? (The October 2026 answer)

Is there an Instagram app for Mac? No: not even the iPad app runs on Mac. What works instead in October 2026, from instagram.com to a Dock web app and DMs.

The short answer

  • No. As of October 2026 Instagram has no Mac app, and its iPhone and iPad app isn't offered on Macs either: the App Store lists it for iPhone and iPad only.
  • On a Mac, Instagram means instagram.com in a browser, which handles posting photos, DMs, voice messages and audio or video calls with up to eight people.
  • You can make instagram.com feel like an app: in Safari on macOS Sonoma or later choose File > Add to Dock, or in Chrome use Install page as app.
  • Any website offering an 'Instagram for Mac' download isn't Instagram. Meta doesn't publish one.
  • Instagram DMs on the web are no longer end-to-end encrypted: Instagram ended that option on 8 May 2026.

No, there is no Instagram app for Mac in October 2026. Instagram’s iPhone and iPad app isn’t offered on Macs either: even though Macs with Apple silicon can run many iPad apps, Instagram’s App Store listing covers iPhone and iPad only. On a Mac, Instagram means instagram.com in a browser, which handles your feed, posting, DMs and calls.

Here’s what we checked on 20 October 2026, how to make the website behave like an app, and what to do if you mainly want your Instagram DMs on your Mac.

What works on a Mac instagram.com in Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge

Why isn’t there an Instagram app for Mac?

Meta hasn’t released one and hasn’t said publicly why. What we can say for certain is how the App Store treats it. Macs with Apple silicon can run many iPhone and iPad apps, which show up in the Mac App Store labelled “Designed for iPhone” or “Designed for iPad” (Apple); that’s how many phone apps reach the Mac without a dedicated version. Instagram’s listing doesn’t include the Mac, so it never shows up in the Mac App Store.

It took Instagram about 15 years to ship an iPad app: the iPad version arrived in September 2025, and it opens straight into Reels. If a Mac app ever follows, it will be news; until then, the website is the official way in.

Watch out for fake “Instagram for Mac” downloads

Search results for this question include pages on unrelated or hijacked websites offering an “Instagram for Mac” download. Meta doesn’t offer one, so anything you download from those pages isn’t Instagram and may not be safe. Don’t enter your Instagram password into a third-party app or site that claims to be Instagram for Mac.

How to make instagram.com feel like a Mac app

You can give Instagram its own window, Dock icon and app switcher entry in about 30 seconds.

In Safari (macOS Sonoma or later)

  1. Open instagram.com in Safari and log in.
  2. In the menu bar, choose File > Add to Dock.
  3. Keep the name “Instagram” (or change it) and confirm.

Apple says a Safari web app “shares no browsing history, cookies, website data, or settings with Safari” (Apple), so you’ll log in once more inside the web app. To get badge counts on the Dock icon, allow notifications when the web app asks, not in Safari. To remove it later, drag it from the Applications folder in your home folder to the Trash.

In Google Chrome

  1. Open instagram.com in Chrome and log in.
  2. Click the More menu (three dots) > Cast, save, and share > Install page as app.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions (Google’s steps).

The closest thing to the real app: iPhone Mirroring

If you have an iPhone, iPhone Mirroring puts its screen in a window on your Mac, so you can use the actual Instagram iPhone app with your keyboard and trackpad. It needs a Mac with Apple silicon or a T2 chip on macOS Sequoia 15 or later, an iPhone on iOS 18 or later that’s locked and nearby, and the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication on both (Apple’s requirements). Apple says it “is currently unavailable in the European Union.”

What you can do on instagram.com from a Mac

Most of what people want from a Mac app already works in the browser. Instagram’s help center documents these computer steps:

  • Post photos: click Create on the left, then Post > Select from Computer, choose a size, add filters, a caption and a location, and click Share (Instagram).
  • Send DMs: click Messages on the left, then Compose, choose people, click Chat and type (Instagram).
  • Send voice messages: in a chat, click the Microphone, record, then click Send.
  • Call: open a chat and click Call or Video in the top right, then Start call. Calls can include up to eight people (Instagram).

One privacy change is worth knowing. Instagram used to offer opt-in end-to-end encrypted chats. That option ended on 8 May 2026, so Instagram DMs are no longer end-to-end encrypted, in the browser or in the phone app.

If you mainly want Instagram DMs on your Mac

Many people who search for an Instagram Mac app really want to answer DMs without picking up their phone. The browser does that, but it’s one more tab next to WhatsApp, iMessage and Telegram. Our guide to Instagram DMs on a Mac compares the browser, a Dock web app and a unified inbox in detail.

Tera Chat is our app: a free Mac app that brings iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder into one inbox and drafts replies in your own texting style. For Instagram it does DMs only:

  • Go to Settings > Messaging > Instagram accounts > Connect and sign in on Instagram’s own login page inside Tera Chat. You can connect up to three Instagram accounts and keep them in one inbox.
  • You can read and reply to DMs next to your other chats; replies sent from Tera Chat are text only. Tera Chat doesn’t do the feed, Reels, Stories or posting, and it doesn’t place calls itself: its call buttons open Instagram’s website.
  • It needs a Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 15 or later, and it doesn’t notify you of every new message, so keep Instagram’s notifications on your phone.
  • Tera Chat isn’t made by or affiliated with Meta. Any app that signs in to Instagram for you carries some platform risk, which we cover in are all-in-one messaging apps safe?

The short answer, again

There’s no Instagram app for Mac, and the iPad app isn’t offered for Macs. Use instagram.com, turn it into a Dock web app with Safari’s File > Add to Dock, use iPhone Mirroring when you need the phone app, and ignore any site offering an “Instagram for Mac” download.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run the Instagram iPad app on an M1 or newer Mac?

Not from the App Store. Apple silicon Macs can install many iPhone and iPad apps, but Instagram's listing only covers iPhone and iPad, so it doesn't appear in the Mac App Store.

Can I post on Instagram from a Mac?

Yes. On instagram.com, click Create on the left, choose Post, then Select from Computer. Instagram accepts JPG, PNG and HEIC photos.

Can I make Instagram calls on a Mac?

Yes. On instagram.com, open a chat and click the call or video icon in the top right. Instagram supports audio and video calls with up to eight people.

Why do I have to log in again after adding Instagram to the Dock?

A Safari web app keeps its own cookies and website data, separate from Safari, so it doesn't know you're already logged in. Log in once inside the web app and it remembers you.
