Messaging on your Mac

How to hide or lock chats on a Mac (Messages, WhatsApp, Telegram)

How to hide or lock chats on a Mac in Messages, WhatsApp and Telegram: what each app can do today, what it can't, and the one lock that covers every app.

The short answer

  • Messages on a Mac can't lock or hide a single conversation. You can silence it, hide notification previews, delete it, or stop Messages on that Mac.
  • WhatsApp's Mac app has no Chat lock or App lock as of October 2026. WhatsApp Web has both, with a secret code you first set up on your phone.
  • Telegram's two Mac apps can lock the whole app with a passcode (⌘L in Telegram for macOS), but not one chat.
  • Locking your Mac protects every chat app at once: Control-Command-Q, a password required immediately, and FileVault.
  • Tera Chat's per-chat Lock has no PIN, password or Touch ID: it keeps a chat out of sight, not out of reach. To lock the whole app, turn on Lock Tera Chat with Touch ID, which also takes your chats out of Spotlight while it's on.

Messages on a Mac can’t lock or hide a single conversation, and neither can WhatsApp’s Mac app, which WhatsApp says doesn’t support Chat lock yet. What does work today: WhatsApp Web has Chat lock and App lock, Telegram’s Mac apps lock the whole app with a passcode, most apps can archive or silence a chat, and locking your Mac itself protects every chat app at once.

This guide covers each option and its limits, including what each one does not stop. We checked every step against Apple’s, WhatsApp’s, Instagram’s and Telegram’s own help pages and Telegram’s app source code on 20 October 2026, using Apple’s guides for macOS 27. Menu names can differ slightly between versions.

Hide or lock chats on a Mac: what each app offers (checked October 2026)

App on your Mac Lock one chat Lock the whole app Hide a chat from the main list
Messages No No (lock your Mac instead) No (delete it, or silence it with Hide Alerts)
WhatsApp for Mac (app) No, “currently not supported” No, “not yet available” Archive
WhatsApp Web Yes, with a secret code set on your phone Yes, App lock with a password Archive; locked chats can also be hidden
Telegram for macOS No Yes, passcode, with Touch ID Archive
Telegram Desktop No Yes, local passcode Archive

Can you lock or hide a conversation in Messages on a Mac?

No. Apple’s Messages app on the Mac has no lock and no hide for a single conversation; its user guide for macOS 27 covers neither. What you can do is make a conversation quieter, keep it off your screen, or keep Messages off that Mac.

Silence it with Hide Alerts

  1. In Messages, select the conversation.
  2. Click the contact or group icon at the top, then turn on Hide Alerts.

You can also Control-click the conversation in the sidebar, or press ⌥⌘M with it selected (Apple). Two things to know from Apple’s guide: “Senders receive a note indicating that you have notifications silenced”, and you’re still notified when someone mentions your name if Notify me when my name is mentioned is on in Messages → Settings → General (Apple).

Keep message text out of notifications

Notification banners can show a message to anyone glancing at your screen. Open System Settings → Notifications, then set Show previews to Never, or to the option that shows previews only while your Mac isn’t locked. You can set it for all apps or only for Messages, WhatsApp or Telegram in each app’s notification settings (Apple).

Delete it (carefully)

Control-click the conversation and choose Delete. With Messages in iCloud on, that deletes it from all your Apple devices, and it sits in View → Recently Deleted for up to 30 days before it’s gone (Apple). That makes deleting a poor way to “hide” something you want to keep.

Stop Messages on this Mac

If the Mac is shared and you don’t want your texts on it at all, go to Messages → Settings → iMessage and click Sign Out, or deselect Enable Messages in iCloud (Apple). For a Mac that several people use, a separate user account for each person is cleaner: each account has its own Messages, and you add one in System Settings → Users & Groups (Apple).

Pressing ⌘H hides the Messages window, which is handy when someone walks up, but anyone can bring it back by clicking Messages in the Dock.

Can you lock WhatsApp on a Mac?

Not in the WhatsApp app for Mac as of October 2026. WhatsApp’s help center says “Chat lock is currently not supported on WhatsApp for Mac” (WhatsApp) and “App lock is not yet available for WhatsApp on Mac” (WhatsApp). WhatsApp Web, in your Mac’s browser, has both. Our guide to WhatsApp on Mac explains the difference between the app and the web version.

Lock a chat on WhatsApp Web

  1. On your iPhone or Android phone, lock any chat first and create a secret code. WhatsApp Web needs that code (WhatsApp).
  2. On WhatsApp Web, right-click the chat and choose Lock chat.
  3. To read locked chats, click Locked chats, type your secret code, then click Continue.

Notifications for locked chats don’t show the contact or the message (“WhatsApp: 1 new message”), the other person isn’t told, and locked chats close when you lock your device. If you’ve chosen on your phone to hide the Locked chats folder, type your secret code into the search bar to find it. If you’ve hidden them and forget the code, you get them back by clearing your locked chats from your phone, which deletes their messages, photos and videos. Chat lock doesn’t block calls.

Lock the whole app on WhatsApp Web

  1. Open Settings → Privacy → App lock and turn it on.
  2. Set a password (6 to 128 characters) and choose when it locks itself: after 1 minute, 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours.
  3. To lock it straight away, open the menu and choose Lock app, or press ⌘⌃L.

While App lock is on, notifications don’t appear (WhatsApp).

Archive a chat in the WhatsApp Mac app

Hover over the chat, click the arrow that appears, and choose Archive. Archiving doesn’t delete anything, archived chats don’t notify you unless you’re mentioned or replied to, and new messages keep a chat archived unless you’ve turned off Keep chats archived on your phone (WhatsApp). It’s tidying, not privacy: anyone can open the Archived list.

Can you lock Telegram on a Mac?

Yes, but only the whole app, with a passcode. Telegram makes two Mac apps, Telegram for macOS and Telegram Desktop (our Telegram on Mac guide explains which is which), and both have it. In Telegram for macOS:

  1. Open Settings → Privacy and Security, then Passcode, and choose Turn Passcode On.
  2. Set Auto-Lock to lock after a period away.
  3. Press ⌘L whenever you want to lock it. You can also let Touch ID open it.

In Telegram Desktop the same setting is called Local passcode, under Settings → Privacy and Security, with its own auto-lock timer. Telegram for macOS warns that if you forget the passcode, “you’ll need to delete and reinstall the app. All secret chats will be lost” (Telegram for macOS source). Ordinary chats are stored in Telegram’s cloud and come back when you sign in again; the passcode only locks the app on that Mac (Telegram FAQ).

To move a chat out of your main list, right-click it and choose Archive. Telegram Desktop also has a setting to keep archived chats in the Archive even when they’re unmuted and get a new message (Telegram Desktop source).

What about Instagram?

Instagram has Chat lock, but only in its iPhone and Android apps: its help page covers those two and has no version for computers. You lock and hide chats in the app on your phone, open them with your phone’s face, fingerprint or passcode, and the lock applies to your account only (Instagram Help Center). On a Mac, use the Mac-wide steps below.

The lock that covers every app: lock your Mac

Every option above has a gap somewhere. Locking your Mac closes all of them at once, and takes a second:

  1. Lock it when you step away: press ⌃⌘Q (Apple), or choose Apple menu → Lock Screen (Apple).
  2. Make it lock fast: in System Settings → Lock Screen, set Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off to Immediately (Apple).
  3. Turn on FileVault in System Settings → Privacy & Security → FileVault. Apple says it keeps someone from getting at your data without your login password (Apple).
  4. Give everyone their own account on a shared Mac, as above, so nobody uses your logged-in session.

If your worry is less “someone at my desk” and more “someone reading my messages from another device”, that’s a different check. See is someone reading your messages? for how to review linked devices and sessions in each app.

Hide, Lock and the Touch ID lock in Tera Chat

Tera Chat for Mac, a free app made by the team behind this blog, brings iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder into one inbox, and you can right-click any conversation to pin, archive, hide, mute or lock it.

  • Hide moves a chat out of the Inbox into the Hidden list.
  • Lock makes the chat show “Conversation locked” instead of its messages, until you right-click it and turn Lock off.

To be plain about it: Lock on a chat has no PIN, no password and no Touch ID. Anyone using your Mac can right-click and turn it off. It keeps a chat out of sight, for example when you’re sharing your screen or someone glances over, not out of reach. Both settings also work inside Tera Chat only: the same conversation still appears in Messages, WhatsApp or Telegram on your Mac and phone. Tera Chat also adds your messages to macOS Spotlight so you can search them from anywhere on your Mac, and hiding or locking a chat doesn’t take messages that are already there out of Spotlight.

To keep the whole app out of reach, turn on Lock Tera Chat with Touch ID in Settings → General. It’s off until you turn it on. With it on:

  • Tera Chat locks when it opens, when your Mac sleeps or its screen locks, when you close its window, after 5 minutes without use (never during a call), or when you press ⌃⌘L.
  • It opens again with Touch ID, an Apple Watch or your Mac’s login password. Tera Chat keeps no password of its own.
  • Notifications say only “Something new is waiting”, not who wrote or what.
  • Tera Chat takes your chats and contacts out of Spotlight while the lock is on, and adds them back when you turn it off.

The lock covers what Tera Chat shows on screen: syncing carries on in the background, and nothing on your disk is encrypted by it. It also does nothing for Messages, WhatsApp or Telegram themselves. For real protection across every app, lock your Mac too.

Tera Chat needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later, and reading iMessage needs Full Disk Access (what that means). For other ways to calm a busy inbox, see how to deal with notification overload.

Quick recap

  • Messages: no lock or hide; use Hide Alerts, hidden previews, or a separate user account.
  • WhatsApp: nothing in the Mac app; WhatsApp Web has Chat lock (secret code from your phone) and App lock.
  • Telegram: passcode for the whole app (⌘L in Telegram for macOS).
  • Instagram: Chat lock on phones only.
  • Everything: lock your Mac with ⌃⌘Q.

Frequently asked questions

Can you lock a conversation in Messages on a Mac?

No. Apple's Messages app has no lock or hide for a single conversation on the Mac. Lock the Mac itself, hide notification previews, or use a separate user account if others use your Mac.

Does WhatsApp Chat lock work on Mac?

Not in the WhatsApp app for Mac: WhatsApp says Chat lock is currently not supported there. It does work on WhatsApp Web, after you create a secret code on your phone.

How do I lock Telegram on a Mac?

In Telegram for macOS, go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Passcode, and turn it on. After that, press Command-L to lock it. Telegram Desktop calls it Local passcode.

Does archiving a chat hide it?

It moves the chat out of your main list without deleting it. In WhatsApp, archived chats don't notify you unless you're mentioned or replied to. Anyone who opens the Archived list can still read them.

Is Tera Chat's Lock password protected?

Not the Lock on a single chat. A locked chat shows Conversation locked instead of its messages, but there's no PIN, password or Touch ID, so anyone using your Mac can turn Lock off from the right-click menu. The whole app is different: turn on Lock Tera Chat with Touch ID in Settings, General, and it opens only with Touch ID or your Mac password.
