Dating Sunday 2027: the busiest day on dating apps, and how to use it

Dating Sunday 2027 is Sunday 3 January, the busiest day on dating apps. What Tinder and Hinge have said about it, when people message most, and a plan for the day.

The short answer

  • Dating Sunday is the first Sunday of January, which dating apps call their busiest day of the year. In 2027 it falls on Sunday 3 January.
  • Tinder's release before Dating Sunday 2026 says messages were nearly 10% and likes over 10% above the rest of the year on Dating Sunday (its text says last year, its footnote 7 January 2024), and its busy "Peak Season" lasts until Valentine's Day (Sunday 14 February 2027).
  • Hinge's guide for Dating Sunday 2026 says Americans sent the most messages in the 9 pm hour, and that your best chance of a reply is within 24 hours of matching.
  • More matches means more chats to keep up with: refresh your profile beforehand, reply within a day, suggest a real plan, and keep safety basics in place.

Dating Sunday is the first Sunday of January, which dating apps describe as their busiest day of the year, and in 2027 it falls on Sunday 3 January. Hinge calls it “annually recognized as the busiest day for dating apps”, and Tinder says it falls inside a “Peak Season” that runs from 1 January to Valentine’s Day, which is Sunday 14 February in 2027.

This page covers what the apps have actually published about the day (with the year of each figure, and the numbers we couldn’t confirm), why January peaks, the best time to be online, a checklist for the day, and how to keep a sudden rush of new chats under control.

When is Dating Sunday?

It’s always the first Sunday of the year.

What the dating apps have said about it

Every Dating Sunday number on this page comes from the apps themselves, measured on their own platforms. Here’s what they published, with the year each source gives and the link.

Bumble No Dating Sunday figures found on its own site

Two cautions. These are company figures, published to promote the apps, and we found no independent study that checks them (Tinder’s two releases even footnote the same date, 7 January 2024, for different numbers, so treat the exact percentages loosely). And some numbers repeated widely online, such as a “31.2% rise in likes” for Hinge, don’t appear on Hinge’s own pages that we could find, so we’ve left them out.

Why do dating apps peak on the first Sunday of January?

The apps put it down to fresh starts. Tinder’s dating expert Sera Bozza calls the day “New Year’s Day for your love life”. The practical reasons are easy to see: the holidays are over, people are home, New Year resolutions are fresh, and Sunday evening is free time for most people. None of that has been studied directly, so treat it as a sensible explanation, not a finding.

Is it a good day to be on the apps?

Yes, with a caveat. More people are active, so you’ll likely get more matches and faster replies. You’ll also face more competition for attention, and more chats than usual at once. What counts is answering your matches properly and soon: Hinge’s 2026 guide says “your best chance at getting a response is within 24 hours of matching”. Our guide to how long to wait to reply on dating apps has Hinge’s earlier data on fast replies and dates.

A checklist for Dating Sunday

In the week before (Monday 28 December to Saturday 2 January)

  1. Refresh your profile. Recent photos, and prompts that show what you actually do.
  2. Decide how many chats you can keep up with. Pick a number you can answer properly within a day; for many people that’s a handful, not twenty.
  3. Have two or three date ideas ready for early January, so you can suggest something specific. Our free date idea generator has a Valentine’s section if a match turns into a February plan.

On the day (Sunday 3 January 2027)

  1. Be on in the evening. Hinge’s 2026 guide put the US peak for messages in the 9 pm hour (EST), and the peaks it gave for Canada, the UK and Australia were in the evening too.
  2. Comment on something specific when you like a profile; Hinge says comments are twice as likely to lead to a date as a plain like.
  3. Reply within a day to every match you’re interested in.
  4. Ask a question that invites a real answer, not “how was your holiday”.
  5. Suggest a plan once the chat is going well, rather than texting for weeks. Our guide on how to ask someone out over text has the wording.

Safety, as on any day

  • Keep the conversation on the app while you’re getting to know someone; Tinder’s safety tips say people with bad intentions often try to move it elsewhere right away.
  • Never send money, and treat any emergency that needs money as a warning sign (FTC).
  • Meet in a public place, tell a friend where you’re going, and arrange your own way there and back.

New Year openers that don’t sound like everyone else’s

On Dating Sunday everyone sends “happy new year!” and “how were your holidays?”. Tie your first message to something in their profile instead. These are example messages, made up for this guide:

  • Their photo is from a race or a hike: “Is that photo from a race? Are you signed up for anything this year, or is January a rest month?”
  • They mention cooking: “Your prompt says you make a great curry. Honest question: what’s the dish you’re trying to master this year?”
  • They list travel: “Lisbon and Tokyo in one profile. Where’s the first trip of the year going to be?”
  • Their prompt is about a show: “You picked Gilmore Girls as your comfort watch. Did you rewatch it over the holidays or start something new?”
  • There’s not much in the profile: “Your dog has the best expression in that third photo. What’s their name, and do they have New Year resolutions too?”

Each one is about them, easy to answer, and leaves room for a second message. More examples by profile type are in first messages on dating apps.

How to keep a rush of new chats straight

Dating Sunday can mean a dozen new conversations across two or three apps in one evening. A simple system helps:

  • Reply in order, oldest waiting first, and answer each one properly rather than everyone briefly.
  • Keep a one-line note per match (their name, the thing you talked about, any plan), so you don’t mix people up.
  • Close chats kindly that aren’t going anywhere, instead of letting them fade.

Our guide to managing multiple dating apps sets out the full routine.

If you’re on a Mac, Tera Chat for Mac, a free app we make, can help with the “which chat was that” problem. It puts Tinder matches next to your iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram chats, shows a New matches rail of people who haven’t heard from you yet, and flags questions you never answered and conversations going quiet. With a Tera Chat AI plan it can suggest openers built from a match’s own bio and prompts. You review every one, and preparing openers doesn’t send anything; we’d suggest putting each one in your own words before you send it. Hinge is in beta and read-only, and Bumble is coming soon. Tera Chat connects to your Tinder account, so it’s the kind of third-party tool Tinder’s and Hinge’s terms restrict; read is it against Tinder’s rules to use AI? before you decide.

After Dating Sunday

The rush doesn’t stop on Monday: Tinder counts 1 January to 14 February as its Peak Season. Use the next six weeks to turn good chats into dates, and if a match moves to Instagram or WhatsApp, see when and how to move off a dating app safely. We’ll add the apps’ 2027 figures to this page once they publish them.

Frequently asked questions

When is Dating Sunday 2027?

Sunday 3 January 2027, the first Sunday of the year. In 2026 it was 4 January and in 2025 it was 5 January.

What time is best to be on dating apps on Dating Sunday?

In the evening. Hinge's guide for Dating Sunday 2026 said Americans sent the most likes in the 8 pm hour, the most messages in the 9 pm hour and the most voice notes in the 10 pm hour (Eastern time), with similar evening peaks in other countries.

Is Dating Sunday real or just marketing?

Both. The figures come from the apps themselves, not independent research, and they use the day to promote their features. But Tinder reports clear spikes, Hinge calls it the busiest day for dating apps, and it makes sense that people return to the apps after the holidays.

Does Bumble have Dating Sunday figures?

We couldn't find any on Bumble's own site, so this page doesn't quote any. Figures repeated online for Bumble or Hinge without a link to the app's own page are best ignored.

Should I wait until Dating Sunday to rejoin a dating app?

There's no need to wait, but updating your profile in the days before means you're ready when activity peaks, and Tinder's busy season runs on to Valentine's Day.
