How long to wait to reply on Hinge or Tinder (what the data says)

How long to wait to reply on Hinge or Tinder: what Hinge's data and attraction research say, reply windows for each stage, and what to say if you replied late.

The short answer

  • You don't need to wait. Reply when you have something good to say, ideally within 24 hours.
  • Hinge found that matches whose first message got a reply within 24 hours were 72% more likely to lead to a date (2023 data).
  • Playing hard to get backfires early: a 2014 study found it lowers both wanting and liking unless the other person is already invested in you.
  • Mirror their energy and length more than their timing, and if you replied late, own it in one line and add something interesting.

You don’t need to wait at all: reply when you have something good to say, ideally within a day. Hinge found that matches whose first message got a reply within 24 hours were 72% more likely to lead to a date (2023 data), and research on “playing hard to get” suggests deliberate delays backfire with people who aren’t yet invested in you.

Below: what the data actually says, why the old three-day rule doesn’t fit dating apps, reply windows for each stage of a chat, what to say when you replied late, and how to keep up without living on your phone.

What does the data say?

Three findings are worth knowing.

Fast first replies go with more dates. In a May 2024 announcement, Hinge said that in its 2023 data, matches where the first message got a reply within 24 hours were 72% more likely to result in a date. The same release says 44% of daters name lack of responsiveness as a top dating challenge.

Hinge built a feature to make people reply. Hinge’s Your Turn Limits test asked daters with eight or more people waiting on a response to reply or end those chats before they could keep sending and receiving likes. In September 2024, Hinge reported that the feature raised responsiveness on the app by 20%, and 48% of users said it helped them focus on quality over quantity.

Playing hard to get only works on people who are already hooked. In two studies published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Dai, Dong and Jia (2014) found that playing hard to get raised how much someone wanted the other person but lowered how much they liked them, and only when they were already committed to pursuing them. Without that commitment, it lowered both.

A caveat on the Hinge number: it shows a link, not a cause. People who reply quickly may simply be more interested to begin with. Still, nothing in the evidence suggests that waiting on purpose helps, and a new match is exactly the person who isn’t committed yet.

Why “wait three days” doesn’t work on dating apps

The three-day rule is old dating folklore about waiting before you call someone you’ve just met. On a dating app it fails for three reasons:

  1. Your match has other chats. A day or two of silence is enough for a conversation to drop down their list.
  2. Momentum is most of what an early chat has. You don’t share friends, history or a place you’ll see each other again. If the energy fades, there’s nothing to bring it back.
  3. They aren’t invested yet. That’s the condition under which the 2014 study found playing hard to get lowers attraction.

How long to take at each stage

These windows are rules of thumb built on the findings above. Faster is fine whenever you’re free.

Stage Aim to reply within Why
They sent the first message, or a like with a comment on Hinge 24 hours Hinge’s data links a reply within 24 hours to more dates
An active back-and-forth The same day, whenever you see it Momentum is fragile early on
They suggested a plan or asked you out A day Plans go stale; a quick yes or a kind no is a courtesy
You’ve moved to texting, Instagram or WhatsApp The same rhythm as before A sudden slowdown after swapping numbers reads as cooling off
After a first date The same day or the next See what to text after a first date
You’re not interested When you can, kindly, or just unmatch Leaving people hanging is what everyone complains about

Should you reply instantly?

You can. Replying within minutes when you’re free isn’t desperate; it reads as interest, and the evidence leans toward speed. You also don’t need to be on call. Someone who replies once a day with real effort is better company than someone who replies instantly with “lol”.

Mirror their energy more than their timing. If they write two thoughtful sentences once a day, a thoughtful reply within a day matches them. If you’re both online and trading quick messages, keep the pace. What doesn’t work is a timer: waiting exactly as long as they did, or holding a reply back to seem busy.

What to say if you replied late

Own it in one line, then add something interesting so the reply is worth the wait. Don’t over-explain.

How late A reply you could adapt
A couple of days “Sorry, this week ate me alive. Okay, back to the important question: did the pasta experiment work?”
About a week “I owe you a reply from last week, which is rude of me. Short version: yes, I did try the climbing gym, and my arms have filed a complaint.”
A few weeks “I’m terrible, this got buried under a chaotic month. But I never found out: did you get the apartment with the balcony?”

What if they take ages to reply to you?

Slow isn’t the same as uninterested. Some people check dating apps once a day or less. Look at what they send when they do reply: questions back, details picked up, enthusiasm. A slow reply with substance is a good sign. Replies that get slower and shorter over time are the real signal (see how to respond to dry texts), and if they stop entirely, send one follow-up and let it go.

How to reply within a day without living on the app

  1. Check at set times. Once in the morning and once in the evening covers the 24-hour window.
  2. Keep fewer chats active. Most people can’t hold a dozen good conversations at once, which is why Hinge built Your Turn Limits. Close the chats you’re not excited about.
  3. Reply when you see it, if you can. Saving replies “for later” is how they get forgotten.
  4. Keep one place to look. Switching between Tinder, Hinge, Instagram and your texts is how chats slip.

That last point is where Tera Chat can help if you use a Mac. It puts your Tinder chats next to iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram, and the Needs Reply view lists the conversations waiting on you. Open it from the menu bar or with ⌘⇧M from any app. One honest limit: Tera Chat doesn’t show a notification for every new message, so keep the dating app’s own notifications on if you want instant alerts.

Tera Chat connects to your Tinder account (Hinge is a read-only beta), so it’s the kind of third-party tool Tinder’s and Hinge’s terms restrict, AI included. Read what the dating apps’ rules say about AI before you connect. Tera Chat isn’t affiliated with Tinder, Hinge or Match Group. If you’re juggling several apps, our guide to managing conversations across dating apps has a weekly routine.

The short version

  • No waiting games. Reply when you have something good to say, ideally within 24 hours.
  • Hinge’s data favors speed; attraction research says playing hard to get backfires early.
  • Mirror their energy and length, not their timer.
  • Late? One line of ownership, then something worth reading.

Frequently asked questions

Is replying instantly on Hinge or Tinder desperate?

No. If you're free and have something to say, reply. Speed reads as interest, and Hinge's data links fast first replies to more dates. What reads badly is pressure, like chasing them when they haven't answered.

Should I wait as long as they did before replying?

There's no need to match their delay to the minute. Reply when you can, roughly in the same rhythm, and put your effort into what you say rather than when you say it.

Does the three-day rule apply to dating apps?

No. It was dating folklore about calling after meeting someone, and it doesn't fit apps, where your match is talking to other people and a chat can go cold in days.

What should I say if I replied days late?

Apologize once, briefly, and make the rest of the message worth reading, for example: 'Late reply, sorry. But I need the ending: did your cat ever come down from the wardrobe?' Long explanations make a small delay feel bigger than it was.

How often should I check dating apps?

Once or twice a day at set times is enough to reply within 24 hours without living on the app. Fewer active chats makes that much easier.
