Hinge or Tinder match stopped replying? What to send, and when to let it go

Hinge match stopped responding, or a Tinder match went quiet? The one-follow-up rule, exact messages for each stage of the chat, and when to let it go.

The short answer

  • Send one follow-up, not zero and not three. Wait a few days, make it new and easy to answer, and leave them an out.
  • Silence on dating apps is common and usually about the other person's attention. Hinge found 44% of daters name lack of responsiveness as a top dating challenge.
  • Match the follow-up to the stage: a fresh opener if they never replied, a callback if the chat had momentum, a lighter version of the plan if they went quiet after you asked them out.
  • If the follow-up gets no answer, treat it as a no. Being ghosted but not unmatched on Hinge doesn't mean they're secretly interested.

When a Hinge or Tinder match stops replying, send one short, easy follow-up after a few days, ideally one that picks up something from your chat, and if that gets no answer, let it go. Silence on dating apps is common and is usually about the other person’s attention, not your worth: in Hinge research published in 2024, 44% of daters named lack of responsiveness as one of their top dating challenges.

This guide covers why matches go quiet, the one-follow-up rule, exact messages for each stage of a chat (after your opener, mid-chat, after you ask them out, after you swap numbers), what not to send, and what to check if all your matches seem to stop responding. All example chats are made up for this guide.

Why do matches stop responding?

Most of the time it’s one of these, and you’ll rarely know which:

  • They’re juggling several chats and yours slipped down the list.
  • Life got busy: work, travel, family, a bad week.
  • The chat lost steam, often because it was stuck in question-and-answer mode or the last message was hard to reply to.
  • They met someone, or things picked up with another match.
  • They’re not feeling it and didn’t want to say so.
  • They took a break from the app or deleted it.

Unanswered messages are the norm, not the exception. Hinge’s own research (published May 2024) found 44% of daters cite lack of responsiveness as a top dating challenge, and that’s why Hinge tested Your Turn Limits, which asked daters with eight or more people waiting on a reply to answer or end those chats before they could keep sending and receiving likes. An older academic study of messages on a popular free US dating site in four cities (January 2014 data) found women replied, on average, to fewer than 20% of the messages they received from men (Bruch and Newman, Science Advances, 2018). Silence is the background noise of app dating.

The one-follow-up rule

Send one follow-up. Not zero, because people genuinely miss messages and get busy. Not three, because a string of unanswered messages reads as pressure. One good follow-up gives the chat a fair second chance and gives you a clear answer.

A good follow-up has four qualities:

  1. It waits. A few days, not a few hours (timings by stage below).
  2. It’s new. A callback to something they said, or a new detail, never just “hello?”.
  3. It’s easy to answer. One light question or a simple yes/no plan.
  4. It leaves an out. No guilt, no “did I do something wrong?”.

Then stop. If it gets no answer, that is the answer.

What to send, by stage

Timings are rules of thumb, not research. Adjust to how fast the chat was moving before it stopped.

They never answered your opener

Wait three to five days, then try once more with a different angle. Openers that fall flat are often just generic, so pick a new, specific detail from their profile.

  • “Second attempt, different approach: I need your expert opinion on the best taco in this city. Your profile says you’d know.”
  • “Okay, my first message was boring. Better question: is the dog in your third photo yours, and what’s his name?”

If that gets nothing, move on. For stronger first messages, see our first message examples sorted by profile.

The chat died after a few messages

Wait two to three days. Go back to the most interesting thing they said and add something of your own.

  • “I keep thinking about your ‘pancakes after night shifts’ ritual. I tried it after a late one this week. Verdict: life-changing. What’s your order?”
  • “You never told me how the half marathon training is going. Are your legs still filing complaints?”

They went quiet after a good run

If the chat had real momentum and then stopped, something probably came up. Wait two to four days and send a warm, light callback.

  • “Did the big presentation happen? I’ve been wondering how the clicker situation went.”
  • “I just walked past a pottery studio and thought of your wonky bowl. How’s the second attempt going?”

If it’s been weeks rather than days, you’re restarting, not following up: see how to revive a dead conversation.

They went quiet after you asked them out

This one stings, but it often means “busy and didn’t want to commit yet” rather than “no”. Wait two to three days and make it even easier: a lighter version of the plan, plus an out.

  • “No pressure on Saturday. If coffee sometime next week is easier, I’m around. And if you’re not feeling it, totally fine too.”
  • “Still keen on those dumplings whenever suits you. If now’s not a good time, no worries at all.”

They went quiet after you swapped numbers or moved to Instagram

Switching apps is a common place for chats to break, because the conversation’s context stays behind in the dating app. Wait two to three days and remind them who you are with a detail from your chat.

  • “Hey, it’s Dan from Hinge, the guy with the leaning bookshelf. Did you ever make it to the market on Saturday?”

They went quiet after a first date

That’s a different situation with its own etiquette: see what to text after a first date.

What not to send

  • “??” or “Hello?” It’s a demand, not a message.
  • “Guess you’re not interested then.” Passive-aggressive, and it guarantees the silence.
  • “Did I say something wrong?” Puts them on the spot to reassure you.
  • A paragraph about how you feel. Too heavy for a match you haven’t met.
  • A second and third follow-up. One is a nudge; three is pressure.
  • Messages on other apps they didn’t give you. If they haven’t shared their Instagram or number, don’t go looking for it.

An annotated example

Example chat, made up for this guide (Tinder)

You (Tuesday): The hammock is phase two? I need the full night-shift recovery protocol.

(no reply Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday)

You (Friday): Update: I tried the 8am pancake thing after a late one. You were right, it’s a cheat code. Hope your week of nights wasn’t too brutal.

Jordan (Saturday): Omg sorry, this week ate me alive. Three nights in a row. Okay but WHERE did you get pancakes, I need to judge

What’s happening:

  • Three days of silence before the follow-up, matching the stage.
  • The follow-up is a callback (the pancake ritual Jordan described), so it shows you were listening and gives Jordan something easy and fun to reply to.
  • “Hope your week wasn’t too brutal” acknowledges they’re busy without guilt.
  • Jordan replies with a question (“where did you get pancakes”), so the chat is back. If there had been no reply, this would have been the end: no second follow-up.

Ghosted on Hinge but not unmatched: what does it mean?

Usually nothing specific. Unmatching takes a decision and leaving a chat open doesn’t, so people leave matches sitting: they forgot, they’re busy, they’re keeping their options open, or they’re unsure. Hinge itself has treated piles of unanswered chats as a problem: in its September 2024 update, Hinge said Your Turn Limits raised responsiveness on the app by 20% in testing.

Treat a match who doesn’t answer your one follow-up as a no, whether or not they unmatch. You can unmatch yourself to clear your list. After a short chat, no goodbye is needed. If you’d talked a lot or met, a short close is kind: “I’ve enjoyed chatting, but it seems like the timing’s off. Take care.” If they turn up again later, see what to say when someone who ghosted you comes back.

All your matches stopped responding? Check these

If it’s happening with everyone, look at the common factor: your side of the chats. Go through your last five conversations and ask:

  • Are your openers specific to their profile, or could they go to anyone?
  • Are you in interview mode, sending question after question with nothing about you? See how to keep a conversation going.
  • Are your messages easy to answer? Yes-or-no questions and “lol” leave them nothing to reply to.
  • Do you take days to reply yourself, then expect a fast answer?
  • Do you ask for their number or Instagram very early, before there’s any rapport?
  • Do chats run for weeks without you suggesting a plan?
  • Is your profile current, with clear recent photos and something to comment on?

Fixing one or two of these usually changes more than any follow-up line.

Where Tera Chat fits

A lot of “they stopped replying” is really “the chat faded while we were both busy”, and sometimes the person who dropped it was you. If you use a Mac, Tera Chat puts your Tinder matches in one inbox with iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram, surfaces chats that are going quiet or one-sided before they go cold, and flags questions you never answered. The Needs Reply view shows the conversations where the next message is yours.

When you decide to follow up, it can draft one in your texting style (dating drafts need a Tera Chat AI plan or your own ChatGPT account through Codex). Rewrite it so it’s yours:

  • Draft: “Hey, how’s your week going? Hope work hasn’t been too crazy.”
  • Your edit: “Update: I tried the 8am pancake thing after a late one. You were right, it’s a cheat code. Hope your week of nights wasn’t too brutal.”

By default you read and send every message yourself. Tera Chat connects to your Tinder account (Hinge is a read-only beta), so it’s the kind of third-party tool Tinder’s and Hinge’s terms restrict, AI included: read what the dating apps’ rules say about AI before connecting. Tera Chat isn’t affiliated with Tinder, Hinge or Match Group.

The short version

  • Wait a few days, then send one follow-up that’s new, easy and guilt-free.
  • Match it to the stage of the chat.
  • No answer means no. Unmatch if you like, and spend the energy on chats that are alive.
  • If every match goes quiet, audit your own messages first.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait before following up with a match who stopped replying?

As a rule of thumb, two to four days mid-conversation and three to five days if they never answered your opener. Long enough that it isn't a nudge, soon enough that they still remember the chat.

Why do Hinge matches stop responding but not unmatch?

Leaving a chat open costs nothing, while unmatching is a deliberate step, so many people never get round to it. An open match isn't a sign of hidden interest: if your one follow-up goes unanswered, read it as a no.

Should I unmatch if they stop replying?

You can, once your follow-up has gone unanswered. It clears your list and saves you checking. There's no need to send a goodbye after a short chat.

Is it worth sending a second follow-up?

Rarely. A second unanswered message tends to feel like pressure. The exception is when they replied to your first follow-up and then went quiet again, which is a new conversation.

What if they reply weeks later?

Answer normally if you're still interested and skip the guilt trip. Something light like 'Ha, welcome back. Did the move go okay?' works. If you've moved on, a short kind reply is fine too.
