Apple's Personalized Smart Reply in Messages: languages, Macs and when it arrives
Personalized Smart Reply in Messages: English only, M1 Macs and iPhone 15 Pro or later, pulled before iOS 27 launched, expected in iOS 27.2. Checked Oct 2026.
The short answer
- Apple lists Personalized Smart Reply in Messages as an iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and visionOS 27 feature, English only, for iPhone, iPad, Mac with M1 or later and Apple Vision Pro.
- Macworld reports the style-matching replies were removed before iOS 27's public release and expects them in iOS 27.2, whose release candidate Macworld says came out on 19 October; the newest public versions are still iOS 27.0.1 and macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1.
- Standard Smart Reply already works in Messages on Apple Intelligence devices: click or tap the text field and pick a suggested reply.
- It covers Messages only (iMessage, SMS and RCS), not WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram or dating apps.
- Separately, Siri AI (beta, English) can match your writing style in Messages and Mail, but it's behind a waitlist and not on iPhone in the EU.
As of 20 October 2026, Apple lists Personalized Smart Reply in Messages, which suggests replies that match your own writing style, as an iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and visionOS 27 feature: English only, on iPhone, iPad, Mac with M1 or later and Apple Vision Pro (Apple). But Macworld reports the style-matching replies were removed from Messages before iOS 27’s public release and expects them in iOS 27.2 (Macworld), which Macworld says reached release candidate on 19 October, with a public release likely on 26 or 27 October (Macworld). It works only in Apple’s Messages app, not in WhatsApp, Telegram or Instagram.

What is Personalized Smart Reply?
It’s Apple’s upgrade to the quick replies Messages already suggests. Standard Smart Reply offers short, generic responses based on the message you received. The personalized version is meant to draw on how you write, so the suggestions sound like you rather than like a template. MacRumors summed up Apple’s June announcement this way: suggestions “can now reflect a user’s own writing style” (MacRumors).
On a Mac, Apple’s guide describes using suggested replies like this (Apple):
- Select a conversation in Messages.
- Click the text field.
- Choose a suggested reply. It goes into the text field, where you can edit it or refine it with Writing Tools.
- Press Return to send.
Nothing is sent until you send it.

Why don’t I see personalized smart replies?
Work through these in order:
- Your software version. On iOS or macOS 27.0.x, the personalized version may not be there at all, per Macworld. Standard suggestions should still appear.
- Apple Intelligence is on. Check that it’s turned on in System Settings on your Mac, or Settings on your iPhone.
- Your language. Personalized suggestions in Messages are English only. Your device and Siri language need to be supported.
- Your device. Intel Macs, the standard iPhone 15 and older iPhones don’t get Apple Intelligence.
- Your region. Devices bought in mainland China don’t get Apple Intelligence features for now.
- Storage. Apple Intelligence needs up to 8 GB free on most devices.
What it can’t do
- Other apps. Smart Reply is a Messages (and Mail) feature. It doesn’t suggest replies in WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Signal or dating apps. Write with Siri works “virtually anywhere you type” (Apple), but Apple describes its style matching only for Messages and Mail.
- Languages other than English in Messages.
- Intel Macs or older iPhones.
- Different tones for different people. Apple hasn’t described per-person settings.
- Send for you. You still pick, edit and send, which is the right default.
How private is it?
Apple Intelligence runs on your device or on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, where Apple says your data “is never stored” and is “used only for your requests” (Apple). That’s a stronger privacy model than most third-party tools, which send your messages to a cloud AI provider. Our checklist on whether it’s safe to let AI read your messages compares the models.
If your chats aren’t all in Messages
Smart Reply is free, built in and private, and if you text mostly on iMessage in English it may be all you need once iOS 27.2 arrives. On a Mac, ChatGPT’s Messages plugin is another iMessage-only option available now (how to use it).
If your conversations are spread across WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder as well, an Apple feature can’t follow you there. Tera Chat is a Mac app that drafts replies in your style across iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder from one inbox, with a different tone for each tag of contacts (family, colleague, crush and so on). Tinder’s terms restrict third-party tools that connect to your account, and Tera Chat is one (what Tinder’s rules say about AI). The app is free, and its AI works with your ChatGPT account (through OpenAI’s Codex) at no extra cost or with a Claude or Grok API key you pay for (those keys don’t draft Tinder or Instagram replies). It’s Mac-only, needs Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later, and its AI runs on the provider you choose (or on Anthropic’s Claude with a Tera Chat AI plan), not on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. We compare the two honestly in Apple Intelligence vs Tera Chat, and explain the other options in AI that replies to texts in your style.
What to do next
If you’re on iOS or macOS 27.0.x, use standard Smart Reply for now and update when 27.2 arrives. If you want style-matched drafts today, the Siri AI beta (English, waitlist) can match your style in Messages, or you can give any AI a few of your own messages as examples, as our guide to making AI replies sound like you shows.
