Personal CRM with WhatsApp and iMessage: what actually connects

Which personal CRMs read WhatsApp and iMessage, how often they sync and what they keep: Dex, Mesh, folk and Tera Chat compared from their own docs, October 2026.

The short answer

  • Dex links to WhatsApp with a QR code and syncs daily (contacts plus your latest message), and syncs iMessage hourly from its Mac app, which is in beta.
  • Mesh (formerly Clay) imports the people you've texted on iMessage but, by its own help page, none of the message content; its WhatsApp integration isn't documented in detail.
  • folk logs one-to-one WhatsApp chats in real time, but it's a team CRM priced per member, and it doesn't list iMessage.
  • Tera Chat reads full conversations in iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram and keeps them on your Mac; it's Mac only and has no email or LinkedIn.
  • Every CRM we checked that reads iMessage does it through a Mac app with access to the Messages history on that Mac. None reads iMessage from an iPhone.

Only a handful of personal CRMs read WhatsApp or iMessage, and they read very different amounts. As of 20 October 2026, Dex links to WhatsApp with a QR code and syncs daily (contacts plus your latest message) and syncs iMessage hourly through its Mac app, which is in beta. Mesh imports iMessage contacts but, by its own help page, none of the message content. folk logs one-to-one WhatsApp chats for sales teams, and Tera Chat reads full conversations in iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram and keeps them on your Mac. None of them reads iMessage from an iPhone.

This page sets out which CRM reads which messenger, how often, and what it keeps, using each company’s own documentation. Tera Chat is our app; we’ve tried to be fair, and we say where others are the better pick. We didn’t install the other apps, so where a company’s documentation is vague we say so rather than guess.

Why does iMessage only work through a Mac?

Because the only place an app can read your iMessage history is the Messages database on a Mac, and only with your permission. Mesh’s help page puts it plainly: Apple’s limits make it impossible to sync iMessage through Mesh on iPhone or the web, and its Mac integration “requires Full Disk and Contacts access due to the way macOS works”. Tera Chat reads the same Messages history on your Mac, also with Full Disk Access; Dex runs its iMessage sync from the Dex Mac app.

What that means in practice:

  1. You need a Mac signed in to Messages, and the CRM only sees the conversations that reach that Mac.
  2. Syncing pauses when the Mac is off. Dex says it syncs “every hour when your Mac is online”.
  3. You’re granting a powerful permission. Full Disk Access lets an app read protected data across your Mac, not just Messages. Our Full Disk Access explainer covers what it allows and how to revoke it.

How do WhatsApp connections work?

Dex and Tera Chat both connect by showing a QR code that you scan with WhatsApp on your phone, the same way you link WhatsApp Web. That makes the CRM one of your linked devices, and WhatsApp allows up to four of those. In Tera Chat it’s Settings → Messaging → WhatsApp → Pair device; in WhatsApp on your phone, Settings → Linked Devices → Link a Device. folk’s help describes its WhatsApp tracking as working through your WhatsApp account synchronization without detailing the steps, and Mesh’s WhatsApp page doesn’t describe setup.

Linking a third-party tool to a personal WhatsApp account has trade-offs worth understanding first; are all-in-one messaging apps safe? goes through them, and they apply to every tool here, including ours.

What does each tool actually read?

Dex: contacts, dates and your latest message

Dex’s WhatsApp sync imports contacts from one-to-one chats and groups with fewer than five people, updates each contact’s last interaction from recent messages, and shows the most recent message on their profile. It runs daily. Its iMessage sync captures iMessage and SMS, runs hourly from the Mac app, and Dex says “only the most recent message and basic metadata are stored locally on your device”. Its pages don’t say whether message text reaches Dex’s servers, so ask if that matters to you. Instagram adds contacts and logs recent DMs.

  • Good for: keeping “last talked” dates accurate across WhatsApp, iMessage, email and LinkedIn without lifting a finger.
  • Not for: understanding what was said. Dex shows that you talked, when, and the latest message, but it doesn’t flag a question a friend asked three messages back that you never answered.

Mesh: who you text, not what you said

Mesh’s iMessage integration creates contacts for people you’ve texted, skips shortcodes, merges with existing cards and adds “text moments”, but says it “won’t import any of the content of your messages”. Its integration page adds that Mesh can analyze your message history to suggest reminders. Its WhatsApp page promises to sync conversations, attachments and updates into contact profiles, but we couldn’t find a help article that explains how it connects or what it stores.

  • Good for: a free address book that knows who you’re in touch with, while leaving iMessage content alone.
  • Not for: anyone who wants the CRM to notice things inside conversations.

folk: WhatsApp logging for teams

folk imports one-to-one WhatsApp chats (no groups) into each contact’s timeline in real time, and lets you keep them private or share them with your workspace as subject-only or full access. On the Standard plan ($24 per member a month billed yearly) you see up to 30 interactions per contact going back three years; Premium shows full history.

  • Good for: a sales or partnerships team that talks to clients on WhatsApp.
  • Not for: personal use. It doesn’t list iMessage, and you pay per seat.

Tera Chat: the whole conversation, kept on your Mac

Tera Chat is a free Mac app that brings iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder into one inbox and drafts replies in your own texting style. Because it reads the conversations themselves, it can do what contact-level syncing can’t: flag missed cues (a question you never answered, a celebration you missed), surface fading chats before they go cold, and, once AI is set up, catch life events such as birthdays, new jobs and moves from what people tell you. Missed cues and fading chats are worked out on your Mac without AI.

Missed cues: an unanswered question and a friend's job news, found in the chats.

Your messages, contacts and relationship stats are stored on your Mac and never uploaded to a Tera Chat server; settings, AI insights and drafts sync between your Macs only through your own iCloud account. AI sees the conversations it works on: once you set AI up, some features run in the background (for example a summary after every 10 new messages, a daily check for life events and the Sunday digest), and you can pause that in Settings → Pipelines. With your own ChatGPT account or Claude or Grok API key, that text goes to the provider you picked; with a Tera Chat AI plan it goes to Anthropic’s Claude through Tera Chat’s server, which passes it on and doesn’t keep it. If you’re weighing that trade-off, see is it safe to let AI read your messages?.

  • Good for: Mac users who want a relationship tool built on iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram, with the data on their own machine.
  • Not for: anyone without an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later, or anyone who needs email or LinkedIn in the same place. There’s no iPhone app. iMessage contacts show as numbers or emails unless Tera Chat has access to your Contacts, and replies sent to WhatsApp from Tera Chat are text only.

Questions to ask before you connect your chats

Whatever you choose, get answers to these first:

  1. Does it keep message text, or only who and when? Mesh says no text for iMessage; Dex keeps your latest message; Tera Chat keeps full conversations on your Mac.
  2. Where is it stored? Your own device, or the company’s cloud?
  3. How often does it sync, and does your Mac need to be on?
  4. Are group chats included? Dex includes groups under five people; folk only one-to-one chats.
  5. Does AI read it, and which company receives the text?
  6. How do you disconnect? For WhatsApp, log the device out under Settings → Linked Devices on your phone. For iMessage, turn the app off in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access.

Which one should you use?

  • You want WhatsApp and iMessage contact dates alongside LinkedIn and email, on every device: Dex.
  • You want a free address book that knows who you text without reading what you said: Mesh.
  • Your team needs a record of client WhatsApp chats: folk.
  • You want a tool that understands the conversations, including Telegram and Instagram, and keeps them on your Mac: Tera Chat.

Frequently asked questions

Can a personal CRM read my WhatsApp messages?

Some can. Dex syncs WhatsApp daily after you scan a QR code and shows your latest message on each contact. folk logs one-to-one WhatsApp chats for teams. Tera Chat reads full WhatsApp conversations on your Mac. Mesh lists WhatsApp but doesn't document what it stores.

Does Dex sync iMessage from my iPhone?

No. Dex's iMessage sync runs from the Dex desktop app on a Mac, in beta, and syncs every hour while the Mac is online. It captures iMessage and SMS that reach that Mac.

Does Mesh read my iMessages?

Mesh's Mac app creates contacts for people you've texted and adds details to their cards, but its help page says it won't import the content of your messages. It needs Full Disk Access and Contacts access, and isn't available in the App Store build.

Which personal CRM works with Telegram?

Of the tools we checked on 20 October 2026, only Tera Chat reads Telegram, and it runs only on a Mac. Dex, Mesh and folk don't list a Telegram integration.

Is it safe to connect WhatsApp to a CRM?

It depends on what the tool keeps and where. Linking adds the app as one of your WhatsApp linked devices, so check whether it stores message text in its cloud or on your device, and remember you can log it out from WhatsApp's Linked Devices screen.
