Staying in touch

How to reply to happy birthday messages (texts, group chats and posts)

How to reply to happy birthday wishes from friends, family, your partner, coworkers and your boss, in group chats and on social posts, even days later.

The short answer

  • Reply to a happy birthday text with a thank-you plus one personal line: answer their question, say how you're celebrating, or say something back about them.
  • In a group chat, send one thank-you to everyone. On WhatsApp, reacting to each wish notifies only the person who sent it, so the group isn't flooded.
  • For dozens of social posts, a like on each plus one public thank-you post is plenty. Save personal replies for texts and DMs.
  • Replying a day or two late is fine; open with a light 'sorry for the slow reply' and keep going.
  • Don't skimp on the thank-you. In three experiments, people who wrote gratitude letters underestimated how positive recipients would feel and overestimated how awkward it would be.

Reply to a happy birthday message with a thank-you plus one personal line: answer their question, say how you’re celebrating, or say something back about them. For example: “Thank you so much. Quiet dinner with the family tonight, which is exactly what I wanted.” In a group chat, one thank-you to everyone is enough, and for a wall of social posts, a like on each plus one public thank-you covers it. Replying a day or two later is completely fine.

Below: a simple formula, example replies sorted by who sent the message and where it arrived, funny replies, what to send when you’re days late, and how to handle a lot of messages at once. Every example was written for this guide, so change the details to fit you and the person.

The formula: thank them, add one real line

A birthday reply has one job: to let the person know their message landed. Two parts do it.

  1. Say thank you. “Thank you” or “thanks so much” is perfect; it doesn’t need decoration.
  2. Add one line that’s about you two. Answer their question, share one detail of your day, return a compliment, or suggest a catch-up.

The second line is what turns an automatic exchange into a small conversation. And you don’t need to worry about overdoing the thanks: in three experiments where people wrote gratitude letters, the writers underestimated how positive recipients would feel and overestimated how awkward recipients would find it. A warm, specific thank-you lands better than you’d guess.

Match the length to theirs. A one-line “Happy birthday” gets a one- or two-line reply. A long message about what you mean to them deserves more than an emoji. (Matching the other person’s effort is one of the core habits in our texting etiquette guide.)

Replies by who sent it

Your best friend

  • “Thank you, I love you. Still recovering from last night, which I think means it was a good birthday.”
  • “Thanks for being the first message of the day, as always. Can’t wait for Saturday.”
  • “Thank you. You’ve now seen me through 15 of these, which deserves some kind of award.”

A friend

  • “Thank you so much. Low-key dinner tonight, which is exactly what I wanted. Hope you’re doing well.”
  • “Thanks, that made my morning. We need to catch up soon. Free next week?”
  • “Thank you. How’s the new job going?”

Your partner

  • “Thank you for making today feel like a holiday. I love you.”
  • “Best birthday message I got, and I’m not just saying that because you’ll read this.”

Your mom or dad

  • “Thanks, Mom. And thank you for doing all the hard work 30 years ago.”
  • “Thanks, Dad. I’ll call you tonight and tell you about the day.”

A sibling

  • “Thanks. Still younger than you, which remains my favorite fact.”
  • “Thank you. Come over this weekend, there’s far too much cake.”

A grandparent or older relative

  • “Thank you so much, Grandpa. It means a lot that you remembered. I’ll call you this weekend.”
  • “Thank you, Aunt Rose. The card made me laugh. Hope you’re keeping well.”

A coworker

  • “Thank you, that’s really kind.”
  • “Thanks so much. There’s cake in the kitchen if you’re around this afternoon.”

Your boss

Short and warm is right. There’s no need to add more.

  • “Thank you, Sarah. I appreciate it.”
  • “Thank you, that’s very kind of you.”

A client or professional contact

  • “Thank you, Mark. Very kind of you to remember. I hope all’s well on your side.”
  • “Thanks so much for the birthday wishes. Looking forward to catching up at the next meeting.”

Someone you haven’t talked to in years

This is the one worth answering properly. They reached out after a long gap, and research suggests people appreciate being reached out to more than we expect, so reaching back is likely welcome too.

  • “Thank you, this was such a nice surprise. It’s been way too long. How are you doing?”
  • “Thanks so much. Your message reminded me of that summer we worked at the café. What are you up to these days?”

An ex

A polite, brief reply is enough, and you don’t owe one if staying out of contact is better for you.

  • “Thank you, I appreciate it. Hope you’re well.”

Someone you’re dating

  • “Thank you. You remembered, which earns you points. Still on for Friday?”
  • “Thanks, that made me smile. Want to help me celebrate this weekend?”

Someone who wished you happy birthday late

Let them off the hook. A late wish is still a kind one. (If you’re the one who’s late, see our belated birthday messages.)

  • “Thank you, and no apology needed. The celebrations are still going.”
  • “Thanks, it’s never too late for birthday wishes. How have you been?”

Replies by where the message arrived

In a group chat

Send one thank-you to the whole group rather than replying to each wish in the thread. Reply privately to anyone who wrote something personal.

  • Friends’ group: “Thank you all for the birthday love. I feel very lucky to have you.”
  • Family group: “Thank you all so much, what a lovely way to start the day. See you on Sunday.”
  • Work chat: “Thanks, everyone. Really appreciate the wishes.”

On WhatsApp, reactions help here: WhatsApp says that when you react to a message, only the person who sent it gets a notification, so you can react to each wish without pinging the whole group. To answer one person without the group seeing, touch and hold their message and choose Reply Privately (under More on iPhone), per WhatsApp. If you’re the one setting up a group for someone else’s birthday, our list of group chat names has ideas for party groups.

On social media posts

If dozens of people post on your profile, you don’t need to write back to each one. A like or reaction on every post, plus one public thank-you, is plenty:

  • “Thank you for all the birthday wishes today. I read every one of them and I’m grateful for every one of you.”
  • “Another year, and a very full heart. Thank you for the messages, everyone.”

Reply individually to the ones that were personal (a memory, an inside joke, a long note), and answer story mentions with a quick DM: “Thank you for the shoutout. That photo is a deep cut.”

A voice note or a missed call

Answer in kind if you can. A voice note back, or a call when you have a minute, is warmer than a text reply to a voice message. If you can’t call yet: “Just heard your voice note, thank you. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

When the message came with a gift

Thank them for the gift specifically, and say what you’ll do with it.

  • “Thank you for the book. I’ve already started it and I’m hooked.”
  • “The plant is on my desk and I’ve named it after you. Thank you.”

Funny replies to happy birthday

When the person and the friendship run on jokes:

  • “Thank you. I’ve decided to stay this age for a few years, so plan accordingly.”
  • “Thanks. My knees say the year has started.”
  • “Thank you for the reminder that I’m older. Very kind of you, really.”
  • “Thanks. I’m told the first 40 years are the hardest.”

Replying days later

A late thank-you is fine. Open with a light line, then reply as normal.

  • “Sorry for the slow reply, I’ve been working through the birthday messages. Thank you, it really made my day.”
  • “Late to say this, but thank you for the birthday message. It meant a lot.”
  • “I’ve only just come up for air after the weekend. Thank you for the lovely message.”

For anything you leave much longer, our scripts for what to say when you forgot to text someone back cover every delay.

A lot of messages at once? A simple order

  1. Close family and closest friends first, with a personal line each.
  2. Anyone who wrote something long or personal, individually.
  3. Group chats: one thank-you each.
  4. Social posts: a like on each, plus one public thank-you.
  5. Everyone else, with a short “Thank you so much, hope you’re well.”

If your birthday messages arrive across iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram and Telegram, the hard part is often finding them all. Tera Chat for Mac, our app, puts those apps (and Tinder) in one inbox, and its Needs Reply view lists the conversations waiting on you. With AI set up, it can draft each reply in your own texting style; you read the draft, change what doesn’t sound like you, and send it yourself. It’s free and runs on Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) and macOS 15 or later. With AI set up, it also catches birthdays mentioned in your chats, with Add to Calendar, which helps you return the favor; our guide to birthday reminders from your chats compares the options.

The short version

Thank them and add one line that’s about the two of you. One thank-you per group chat, a like on each social post plus one public thank-you, and individual replies for anything personal. Late is fine. And while the birthday messages are open, it’s a good moment to note down the birthdays of the people who wrote, so you can do the same for them; our guide on keeping in touch with friends as an adult has a simple system.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to reply to every happy birthday message?

Reply to personal messages, such as texts, DMs and voice notes. For posts on your profile or a flood of wishes in a group, a like or reaction on each plus one general thank-you is enough.

Is a reaction enough to reply to a birthday wish?

For a post or a quick wish in a group chat, yes. For a personal message from someone close, add a few words of your own.

How long do I have to reply to birthday wishes?

There's no rule. Same day or within a few days is a good aim. After that, a short 'sorry for the slow reply, thank you so much' still lands well.

What do I say when someone wishes me happy birthday late?

Thank them and wave away the lateness: 'Thank you, and no apology needed, the celebrations are still going.' A late wish is still a kind one.

How do I thank everyone in a group chat?

Send one message to the group, such as 'Thank you all for the birthday love, it made my day.' If someone wrote something personal, reply to them privately too.
