What to text on Valentine's Day: examples for a crush, the talking stage and new couples

What to text on Valentine's Day 2027 (a Sunday): examples for the talking stage, a crush, a new couple, a situationship and long distance, and what not to send.

The short answer

  • Match the text to where you are. In the talking stage or with a crush, keep it light and easy to answer; in a new relationship, make it warm and specific; in long distance, time it well and plan the next visit.
  • Valentine's Day 2027 is a Sunday, and Galentine's Day is Saturday 13 February. If you want a date that weekend, ask by early February.
  • A specific line beats a big one. 'I keep thinking about the dumpling place' says more than a copied poem.
  • Don't use Valentine's Day to pressure anyone: no 'so what are we?' ultimatums by text, and no grand gestures someone hasn't invited.
  • Watch for romance scams: the FTC says never to send money or gifts to someone you haven't met in person.

What to text on Valentine’s Day depends on where you are. In the talking stage or with a crush, send something light and easy to answer, ideally with a plan attached. In a new relationship, be warm and specific about them, not about the holiday. In a situationship, don’t use the day to force a “what are we” talk. In long distance, time the message for their morning and plan the next visit. Valentine’s Day 2027 falls on a Sunday, with Galentine’s Day on Saturday 13 February.

Below: example texts for each situation, how to ask someone out for Valentine’s weekend, what not to send, timing across time zones, how to reply to a Valentine’s text you didn’t expect, and a scam warning. All example texts are made up for this guide.

Valentine’s texts at a glance

Where you are Aim for Example
Talking stage Light, with a plan “Happy Valentine’s. I’d rather skip the set menus and take you for tacos on Tuesday. In?”
Crush, not dating yet Friendly, easy to answer “Happy Valentine’s. Any good plans, or are you boycotting it?”
New relationship Warm and specific “Happy first Valentine’s. I keep thinking about how you laughed at the ice rink.”
Situationship Kind, no pressure “Happy Valentine’s. I’m glad you’re in my life, whatever we call it.”
Long distance Timed for them, plus the next visit “Happy Valentine’s from six hours ahead. 23 days until I’m there.”
Friends Warm, a little silly “Happy Galentine’s. Brunch on Saturday, you bring the gossip.”

What to text in the talking stage

A few weeks in, the day is a little awkward: you’re not a couple, but ignoring it feels odd. Acknowledge it lightly and, if you’d like to see them, turn it into a plan. Our guide to the talking stage covers how to read where things are.

  • “Happy Valentine’s. Not sure what the rules are a few weeks in, but I’d like to take you for a drink this week.”
  • “Happy Valentine’s Day. No pressure, but I’d love to see you this weekend. Saturday?”
  • “I was going to ignore Valentine’s, but then I thought of you. Coffee on Sunday?”
  • “Happy Valentine’s. I hope your day’s good, and that whoever’s making your coffee gets it right.”

What to text your crush

If you’re not dating yet, a Valentine’s text is a friendly hello with a door left open. Make it easy to answer either way, and don’t make them carry a confession.

  • “Happy Valentine’s. Any good plans, or are you boycotting it?”
  • “Happy Valentine’s Day. I’ve been meaning to ask: would you want to get dinner sometime?”
  • “Happy Valentine’s. Random question: best chocolate, dark or milk? This feels important.”

If they reply warmly, ask them out within the next day or two, with a day and a place. If the reply is short and friendly, take it at face value. Our guide on how to flirt over text has more on reading the reply.

What to text in a new relationship

The first Valentine’s together doesn’t need a grand speech. Specific beats big: name a moment, a habit, a thing you like about them.

  • “Happy first Valentine’s. I keep thinking about how you laughed at the ice rink when I fell over.”
  • “Happy Valentine’s to my favorite person to text at midnight about nothing.”
  • “Morning. Breakfast is on me. Happy Valentine’s Day.”
  • “I’m not great at this kind of message, so: I really like you, and I’m glad it’s you.”

If you’ve planned something, a text on the day can hint without spoiling it: “Wear comfy shoes tonight. That’s all you get.”

What to text in a situationship

Valentine’s Day puts pressure on an undefined relationship. The kind move is to acknowledge the day without demanding an answer by text. If you want to talk about where it’s going, do it on a different day and, ideally, in person. Our guide to situationship texting has wording for that conversation.

  • “Happy Valentine’s. I’m glad you’re in my life, whatever we call it.”
  • “Happy Valentine’s Day. Want to do something low-key this weekend?”
  • “Happy Valentine’s. No big plans, just wanted to say I like spending time with you.”

What to text in a long-distance relationship

Timing and the next visit matter more than the wording. Send it so it lands in their morning, and make the day about the next time you’ll be together.

  • “Happy Valentine’s from six hours ahead. 23 days until I’m there.”
  • “I’ve hidden something in your mailbox. Open it on the call tonight.”
  • “Happy Valentine’s. Tonight: same film, same time, video call on. I’ll bring the popcorn on my end.”
  • “Can we spend tonight’s call planning the first day of my visit, hour by hour?”

If you’re on a Mac and want a message to arrive at a set time in their time zone, Messages can schedule an iMessage up to 14 days ahead with Send Later (needs macOS 15 or later and iMessage, and you must be online to schedule it; Apple Support). Our guide on scheduling a text on a Mac covers WhatsApp and Telegram too.

Texts for friends and Galentine’s Day

Galentine’s Day falls on Saturday 13 February 2027, the day before Valentine’s. Friends deserve a text too:

  • “Happy Galentine’s. Brunch on Saturday, you bring the gossip.”
  • “Happy Valentine’s to the friend who has seen every one of my bad decisions and stayed.”
  • “Reminder that you’re loved, even if your plans tonight are pizza and the couch.”

How to ask someone out for Valentine’s weekend

With the 14th on a Sunday, the weekend is the natural date, and restaurants fill early. Ask by early February, and offer a choice that doesn’t depend on the holiday:

  • “Want to do something on Valentine’s weekend? Totally fine if Saturday is less loaded than Sunday.”
  • “I’d like to take you out around Valentine’s. Somewhere with no set menu and no roses on the tables. Friday?”

A dinner on the 13th or the 15th gets you the same place, calmer. The Valentine’s list in our free date idea generator has 23 hand-written ideas, from a first date somewhere that isn’t doing Valentine’s to open-when letters for long distance. It uses no AI, and nothing is saved or sent.

What not to send on Valentine’s Day

Don’t Why Instead
“So what are we?” by text, today It turns the day into a test Ask in person, on another day
A long love letter early on It asks the other person to match an intensity they may not feel yet One specific, warm line
A copied poem or a message that reads like AI wrote it It feels generic, and people notice Something only you could say about them
Anything sexual they haven’t invited It’s unwelcome, and it can be harassment Flirt only in the way the chat already does
A Valentine’s text to an ex you’re trying to restart with The day adds pressure to an already loaded message If you want to talk, pick an ordinary day
Guilt about plans (“guess I’ll be alone then”) It’s pressure dressed as a joke Say what you’d like: “I’d love to see you”

How to reply to a Valentine’s text you didn’t expect

If you’re pleased, say so and keep it going: “That’s really sweet, happy Valentine’s to you too. And yes to tacos.” If you’re not interested, be kind and clear in one message: “That’s kind of you, thank you. I don’t see this as romantic, but I hope your day’s a good one.” You don’t owe a long explanation.

A scam warning for Valentine’s season

Romance scammers use the holiday too. Be wary of someone you’ve only met online who can’t meet in person, wants to move the chat off the dating app, asks for money or gift cards, or offers to get you into crypto investing. The US Federal Trade Commission says never to send money or gifts to someone you haven’t met in person (FTC).

Using AI for a Valentine’s text (as a wingman, not a ghostwriter)

AI can help when you’re stuck: a few ideas, or a gut check on whether a line is too much. The message should still be yours, because the whole point of a Valentine’s text is that it came from you.

If you use Tera Chat, our Mac app, it can draft a reply in your texting style, and Plan a date suggests three date ideas that fit what you’ve talked about, with one click to Calendar (dating drafts and date planning need a Tera Chat AI plan, from $9.99 a month as of October 2026, or your own ChatGPT account through Codex). Treat any draft as a first go:

  • Draft: “Happy Valentine’s Day. Hope you have a wonderful day.”
  • Your edit: “Happy Valentine’s. I still owe you a rematch at the arcade, so I’m calling dibs on Saturday.”

You read it, change it and send it yourself. Tera Chat connects to your Tinder account (and Hinge, read-only, in beta), which makes it the kind of third-party tool Tinder’s and Hinge’s terms restrict, AI included; read what the dating apps’ rules say about AI first. It needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later.

The short version

  • Valentine’s Day 2027 is Sunday 14 February; Galentine’s is Saturday the 13th.
  • Talking stage or crush: light, easy to answer, ideally with a plan.
  • New relationship: warm and specific. Situationship: kind, no ultimatums.
  • Long distance: time it for their morning and plan the next visit.
  • Skip pressure, copied poems and anything uninvited, and never send money to someone you haven’t met.

Frequently asked questions

Should I text my crush on Valentine's Day?

Yes, if you'd text them anyway. Keep it light and leave them an easy reply, for example 'Happy Valentine's. Any good plans, or are you boycotting it?' A big confession by text puts a lot of pressure on one message.

What do you text someone you're talking to on Valentine's Day?

Something warm that doesn't assume too much: 'Happy Valentine's. Not sure what the rules are a few weeks in, but I'd like to take you for a drink this week.' It acknowledges the day and turns it into a plan.

Is it weird to text 'Happy Valentine's Day' early in dating?

No. A short, friendly message is normal at any stage. What can feel too much early on is a long, intense message or a gift the other person wasn't expecting.

What should I text if I'm not doing anything for Valentine's?

Be honest and light: 'Not doing anything big this year, but I'd love to see you next weekend.' If you both dislike the holiday, an anti-Valentine's night can be a plan in itself.

When is Valentine's Day 2027?

Sunday 14 February 2027. Galentine's Day, the day for celebrating friends, is Saturday 13 February.
