Dating and texting

What to text before a first date (with examples for every step)

What to text before a first date: how much to text after they say yes, the confirm text the day before, running late, rescheduling or cancelling kindly, and safety.

The short answer

  • Between the yes and the date, text to lock in the plan and keep it warm, not to have the date over text. A message or two a day is plenty.
  • Settle the day, time and place right after they say yes, then send a short confirmation the day before or the morning of.
  • Save your best questions and stories for the date. In Hinge's 2025 survey, 85% of daters said thoughtful questions made them more likely to want a second date.
  • If you're running late, say so early with a real time. If you need to reschedule, offer a new time in the same message.
  • Tell a friend where you're going, meet somewhere public and get yourself there and home.

Before a first date, text enough to settle the plan and keep things warm, and save the real conversation for the date. Lock in the day, time and place as soon as they say yes, send a light message or two in the days between, confirm the day before (or the morning of), and send a quick “on my way” when you leave. If you’re running late or need to reschedule, say so early and offer a new time in the same message.

Below: a timeline from the yes to the date with example texts for each step, how much to text in between, what to send when plans change, and the safety basics. All example texts and chats are made up for this guide.

From yes to the date: what to send, and when

When What to send Example
Right after the yes The details: day, time, place “Great. Thursday at 7 at Lupe’s on Pine Street? I’ll book a table.”
In between One or two light messages, no interview “Saw they have a taco special on Thursdays. The universe approves.”
The day before A short confirmation “Still good for tomorrow at 7? Looking forward to it.”
The morning of (if you didn’t confirm yet) The same, a bit shorter “Still on for tonight?”
When you leave Your ETA “Leaving now, should be there at 7.”
When you arrive Where you are “Here, at a table by the window. Green jacket.”
Running late A real time, sent early “Running 10 minutes late, sorry. Grab a seat if you get there first.”

Asking itself is a separate skill; our guide on how to ask someone out over text has the wording, and planning a first date from your chat shows how to pick a place from what you’ve already talked about. This page starts once they’ve said yes.

Right after they say yes: lock in the details

The best time to settle the logistics is in the same conversation as the yes, while you both have the chat open. A date with no day or place is still a maybe.

  • Day and time: “Does Thursday at 7 work, or is Saturday afternoon better?”
  • Place, with a link or an address: “It’s Lupe’s on Pine Street. Here’s the map link.”
  • Who books: “I’ll book a table for two under Sam.”
  • How long, if it’s a short one: “Coffee for an hour or so? I have a thing after, but I’d like to meet.”

If you’re still talking in a dating app, this is also when many people swap numbers or move to WhatsApp or Instagram. That’s fine but not required: you can confirm a date inside the app. Our guide to moving off a dating app covers when to swap numbers and the scam signs to watch for.

How much should you text before a first date?

Keep texting light and steady: a message or two a day, or a couple of short exchanges in the days before, is plenty. The goal is to keep the plan warm, not to cover everything you’d talk about on the date.

There are two reasons to hold back a little.

You’ll want the material on the day. A date where you already know each other’s job, siblings and travel stories has less to discover. Good questions matter: in Hinge’s 2025 Gen Z D.A.T.E. Report, based on about 30,000 Hinge daters, 85% said they were more likely to want a second date when asked thoughtful questions, and Gen Z daters’ top example of a thoughtful question was a follow-up on something they’d said earlier (Hinge, November 2025). That’s a survey of one app’s users, but the advice costs nothing: note what they mention by text, and ask about it in person.

Long text build-ups can backfire. Weeks of daily texting can build a picture of someone the real person then has to live up to. Our guide to the talking stage covers a 2015 study of online daters that found messaging before meeting helped only up to a point.

Light texts that work in the days between:

  • “Report back: is your sister’s wedding speech finished or are you writing it on the train?”
  • “Fair warning, I’ve been practicing my mini-golf trash talk.”
  • “I tried the coffee place you mentioned. You were right about the croissants.”
  • “Hope the presentation went well today.”

What to skip until you’ve met: long voice-note monologues, heavy topics (exes, family drama, big life plans), and anything sexual the other person hasn’t clearly invited.

The confirmation text: the day before or the morning of

Send a short confirmation the day before, or the morning of the date. It cuts no-shows and nerves, and it gives either of you an easy moment to move the plan if something has come up. Whoever suggested the date usually sends it, but if nobody has by the evening before, send it yourself.

Confirm texts, from casual to specific:

  • “Still good for tomorrow at 7?”
  • “Looking forward to tomorrow. Still Lupe’s at 7?”
  • “Quick check that tomorrow still works. I booked under Sam, 7pm.”
  • “Morning. Still on for tonight? I’ll be the one pretending not to be nervous.”

How to answer one: confirm and add one warm line. “Yes, see you at 7. Very ready for those tacos” beats a bare “yep”.

If they don’t reply, send one nudge a few hours before you’d need to leave: “Still on for 7? Let me know either way.” If you still hear nothing, it’s reasonable not to go. Silence that close to a date usually means it isn’t happening.

On the day: on my way, running late, can’t find you

Day-of texts are about logistics. Keep them short.

  • Leaving: “On my way, should be there about 6:55.”
  • Arrived first: “Here, at a table near the back. Blue shirt.”
  • Running late (send it as soon as you know, with a real time): “So sorry, the train’s stuck. I’ll be about 15 minutes late. Want to grab a drink at the bar on me?”
  • Very late: “I’m going to be 40 minutes late, which isn’t fair on you. Do you want to wait, or shall we move it to Saturday? Either’s fine.”
  • Can’t find each other: “I’m by the door under the big clock. Where are you?”

How to reschedule or cancel a first date kindly

A reschedule needs a new time in the same message; without one, it reads as a no. A cancellation should be early, short and clear.

Situation What to text
Something came up, you still want to go “Work’s blown up and I can’t make Thursday. I still really want to go. Could we do Saturday at 1 instead?”
You’re ill “I’ve come down with something and don’t want to bring it to dinner. Can we push to next week? I’ll book the same place.”
Bad weather or a plan that fell through “The park thing is rained off. Want to swap it for the museum, same time?”
You’ve changed your mind “I’m sorry to do this, but I need to cancel tomorrow. I’ve realized I’m not in the right place to date right now, and I’d rather tell you now than leave it late.”
You’re not feeling it after more chatting “I’ve enjoyed talking, but I don’t think we’re a match, so I’ll cancel tomorrow rather than waste your evening. Good luck out there.”

If they cancel on you, take a reschedule with a new time at face value: “No problem, Saturday works. Hope work calms down.” If they cancel without offering another time, you can offer once (“Sorry to hear it. Want to try next week?”), then leave it with them.

Safety texts before you meet

Meet in public, tell a friend, and get yourself there and home. These come from Tinder’s safety tips, which also suggest a phone or video call before meeting as a useful screen, and they apply on any app.

A text to send a friend before you go:

“Date tonight at 7, Lupe’s on Pine Street. His name’s Sam, here’s his profile. I’ll text you by 9:30. If you don’t hear from me, call.”

Also worth doing:

  • Share your location with that friend for the evening, if your phone makes it easy.
  • Keep your home and work address to yourself until you know the person.
  • Be wary of anyone who keeps finding reasons not to meet, or asks for money. The US Federal Trade Commission lists both as signs of a romance scam and says never to send money to someone you haven’t met in person (FTC).
  • You can leave. Tinder’s tips say it’s okay to end a date early if you feel uneasy, and to ask staff for help if you feel unsafe.

Where Tera Chat fits

If your date came from Tinder and the chat has moved to WhatsApp or iMessage, it’s easy to lose track of what was agreed, and where. On a Mac, Tera Chat puts your Tinder matches in one inbox with iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram, so the plan stays next to the rest of the conversation. With AI set up, three features fit this page:

  • Ask about this chat answers questions like “what restaurant did she mention?” from your recent messages, so you don’t have to scroll back to find the address.
  • Plan a date suggests three date ideas that fit what you’ve talked about, with one click to add the one you pick to Calendar. On Tera Chat’s built-in AI, date planning comes with any Tera Chat AI plan (from $9.99 a month as of October 2026, cancel anytime), or it works with your own ChatGPT account through Codex.
  • Reply drafts in your texting style, with the same AI options for dating chats.

Use any draft as a starting point. A draft might say “Looking forward to tomorrow, see you at 7.” Your edit: “Still on for tomorrow? I’ve been warned the salsa is dangerously hot, so I’m preparing.” You read it, change it and send it yourself.

A note on the rules. Tinder’s Terms of Use (effective 5 March 2026) and Hinge’s Terms (effective 25 August 2025) ban third-party apps that directly interact with the service without written consent, AI systems included. Tera Chat connects to your Tinder account (and Hinge, read-only, in beta), so it’s the kind of tool those clauses cover. Read what the dating apps’ rules say about AI before you connect it. Tera Chat needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later, and it isn’t affiliated with Tinder, Hinge or Match Group.

If you’d rather not use an app at all, the free date idea generator has 148 hand-written ideas you can filter for a first date, and Pick one for me gives you an invite text to copy. It uses no AI and saves nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Should you text before a first date?

Yes, a little. Confirm the plan, send a light message or two in between, and check in the day before. Texting all day, every day before you've met tends to build expectations the date then has to live up to.

Should I text the day of a first date?

A short message on the day is normal: a confirmation in the morning if you didn't send one the day before, and 'on my way' or 'here, by the window' when you arrive.

Who should confirm a first date?

Whoever suggested the date usually confirms, but it doesn't matter much. If the day before arrives and nobody has, send it yourself.

What if they don't reply to my confirmation text?

Send one short nudge a few hours before you'd need to leave, for example 'Still on for 7? Let me know either way.' If there's still no answer, don't go and wait. Silence that close to a date is an answer.

Is it okay to cancel a first date over text?

Yes. A first date is a plan between near-strangers, and a clear, early text is the kind way to cancel. Don't leave it until the last hour unless something really came up.
